  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I know right? Well IMO the system doesn't work if the teachers don't make it work. Anyway it's the next 4 years that are more pertinent. My older son has soooo much homework and he's good about getting it done, but my younger one doesn't have so much and that's what I'm worried about for next year, for him, but what I am curious about now is......Do perspective employers that require a degree just care if you have a degree or do they check out your transcripts/grades you got in college too? Anyone know?

In Australia it seems most want qualifications above even being the right sort of person or good at what you are applying for.. My daughter just graduated High School and it seems all about the numbers.. her score although good is not high enough to get into the very course she wanted... though she has thought of it.. and has other options..

It is sad isn't it.. some people just cannot measure up to the system though they are smart and talented..

There is so much write up about people getting near 100 % like 99.1 etc.. I mean it really makes the people who strive hard but get much much lower scores feel dumb when in fact they are not... many kids drop out so seems to me just sticking it out is cause for a future!!

As in everything else, it depends on the job and the employer. In the first post-college job grades seem to count a lot more than in subsequent jobs.

What seemed to be the biggest obstacle was me getting a degree in a wrong field.

I've been wondering how many of those jobs that require degrees to get hired actually require degrees to do the job. Some jobs obviously do require special knowledge that only comes by way of getting degrees, but some jobs seem questionable--- as though the degree was more snob appeal than real requirement. Having to get a degree in order to get hired in a low-paying field of work seems very questionable.

College is often about proving one has some staying power more than just learning. Completing a 4 yr degree isn't an walk in the park.

College is important for that 1st job. If its in the field then one has a lot of vocabulary and other know specific to the area. Yet there is still a lot to learn to move from the theoretical of college to the application in industry.

couple of thoughts

Yeah I agree with Dayhiker its about proving you can make goals and see them to fruition. Shows you are not a quitter also. What I find kinda weird is, when I was in banking...to be a loan officer you needed a degree. But it didn't matter if the degree was in Culinary Arts, just that you had that degree. I would have thought you would need a degree in the field you are interested in, but??? I don't know how it is now, but a degree definitely gets you more opportunities than I was afforded by not having one.

Sometimes its discrimination when a person has learned a lot on the job and knows their stuff yet isn't given a chance to advance. The nice thing is if one then goes to school the classes are a lot easier since they have that related background. I know the high tech companies will pay 5K a year towards a realted degree. God to love that!

It's an easy thing to verify and measure. Has degree? Yes/no. Can it be verified? If yes, you pass. Anything to reduce the number of applicants when the number of applicants per job is overwhelming is very helpful.

I gather that I may be the exception to the rule, but getting a 4 year degree was honestly the easiest thing I've done in my adult life. Surviving after that has been what was difficult.

I know this is a bit off topic, but I just wanted to share!

This year my children and I got our first big Christmas tree. The other years we have only had really small ones. It is kind of nice. The kids are enjoying it a great deal, especially the younger one.

I believe that this Christmas will be more simple than it has been in previous years. I have been wanting to scale it back for a long time. I have prayed about how to transition into less spending, more experience for a while.

Being away from my family has helped a lot. My mother had been very controlling and manipulative about what was bought and how much was spent on my children for Christmas. It feels so good to be free of that.

:)

Well, I'm in full blown baking mode...
all kinds of cookies, candies, fudge, nummies....

that's about it for the last couple of days...

Yule was wonderful...an amazing time with friends, the winter solstice, the full moon, and the lunar eclipse...

That's not gonna happen with that triad of events for another 456 years!
Amazing :)

Hope y'all have a great holiday season whether it's Christmas or Hanukkah or whatever you celebrate this time of year

Hey Gwenyfur! I was wondering where you had gone lol. Thanks for the comments about positive energy and saying that I'm a good mom. So sweet of you! Things are better for my teen at the moment so I think its gonna be OK at least for awhile.
I haven't done alot of baking this year, and I do miss it. But I used to do it with my girlfriend and she lives in a different state than I do now so....I did make gingerbread cookies, but when I decorated them it looked worse than a 5 year old could do lol. I made my sons each do about 7 of them, just so they could know how difficult it was lol.
I hope you ALL have a very Merry Christmas!!!

I skipped the gingerbread men and decorated cookies...
Settled for the more usual cookies
Fruit cake cookies
molasses cookies
peanut butter
chocolate chip w/ walnuts
peanut butter chip

peanut brittle
peanut butter fudge
fudge (chocolate)
Thankfully there's only 7 for christmas dinner this year...so I'm only baking 2 pies and 1 cheesecake LOL

Today I find I'm pacing myself a bit more...still finding that I don't have the stamina I had before pneumonia...

Have a Merry and Blessed holiday :)

I have done the yearly Gingerbread house....cept this year we made a church out of Gingerbread.

Next year cause my son is getting old enough to have a few skills I was thinking of making a castle.

Then all the cookies.

I think I have made somewhere around 20 dozen at this point. Butterscotchies, chocolate chip, M&M, and aggression cookies. Most of these I have dipped in chocolate....all while working a full forty hour week at a job 90 minutes away from home

ahh well...I will get rest when I am dead.

You're a better man than I!

I'm unemployed this year, so I've taken my leisurely time with all the baking and candy making...

my hat's off to ya...

Happy Holidays :D

I have not done any baking this year. I usually feel bad when I don't, but this time I'm not.

I am enjoying time lounging around with my kids and talking with friends. We have also been hanging out with my ex-mom-in-law, doing fun things away from the house.

I'm trying to cut back on the excess sugar because we have over done it way too much, even when there is not a special occasion to have it. I'm not knocking holiday goodies. I just feel that for us, for this year, we need a break. I'm going to be experimenting this year with changing our habits as far as food and spending is concerned. I don't feel we've been living right. We over-indulge way too much. Time for a change.

I do hope that all of you enjoy your seasonal treats! I am also impressed with the industriousness you guys have.
