and about the 9th hour, Jesus cried out with a loud voice saying Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is, "My God, My God, why have you forsaken Me?

I've always wondered what Jesus meant by this.
It means that God turned away from Him!

Aren't Jesus and God the same person according to your faith? How can you turn away from yourself?
He chose to suffer and die for OUR sin out of Love for us!

And in thus doing He had to take on the humanity of mankind, which was FALLEN!

He crucified the world unto Himself that day!

But death could not hold Him, for He is also GOD! :D

In ascending He brought many sons to glory, for we were in Him when He died! :)

I'm sorry, but I've found your posts incredibly difficult to understand. I still don't understand how you can turn away from yourself.

There are some things that most people find simply too repugnant to look at, or to have anything to do with. The same is true of God. To God, the sight of sin is absolutely repulsive.
Of Himself, Jesus Christ never sinned. He was the most perfect human being that has ever existed, or will ever exist, and He was absolutely innocent in the eyes of God. But, we must keep in mind that the entire purpose of Jesus' human life was to ultimately bear the sin, all of the sin, that has ever been committed by the billions and billions of humans that have ever lived. That, is a mind-boggling amount of sin. Why did Jesus cry out "Eloi, Eloi, Lama Sabachthani?" as His mission reached its fulfillment and He was held personally responsible for all sin? Because, with that immense load of guilt, our guilt, upon Him, for just a very few seconds, God couldn't stand the sight of Him.

Habakkuk 1:13
Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity: wherefore lookest thou upon them that deal treacherously, and holdest thy tongue when the wicked devoureth the man that is more righteous than he?

God the Father and Jesus are both fully God and share that Godhead . . . But they are also two distinct persons within that single Godhead. I can't (and won't try to) explain the trinity here.

God turned away from the sin that rested on Christ at that time. The sin of all humanity (every sin committed and those that would be committed) were on Jesus at that time and God cannot be with sin. Thus, God the Father turned His back on His Son.

I've always wondered what Jesus meant by this.
Because he is undergoing extreme suffering, is about to die, and (like any good Jew) his reference to help him through that is to turn to the Psalms - in this case the first line of Psalm 22.

Num6:22
The LORD said to Moses, 23"Tell Aaron and his sons, ‘This is how you are to bless the Israelites. Say to them:

24 " ‘ "The LORD bless you and keep you; 25 the LORD make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; 26 the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace."

27"So they will put my name on the Israelites, and I will bless them."

The bible is written in a concrete language that attributes phyiscal pictures toward the relationship of God. As noted above, God turning His face toward a person is God placing His with the person more fully and blessing them. However, the death of Jesus is that painful cruel way was God turning His face away. So Jesus crys out about their relationship and what is going on.
