  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

One of the key's is the garment. If you follow out in scripture the word garment, garments, clothed, covering etc. (let the Spirit lead you) It's dealing with being clothed with Him, in righetousness, not only in mind but in spirit as well, all together one. In the Song of Solomon the part about the bridegroom going away can be seen. When her beloved with draws himself she searches everywhere for him and in the end finds that he was in his garden the whole time. The Spirit will lead you into this if you waite on the Lord and still your thoughts, become quite before the Lord in your mind, he will open these things to you and literally your strength will be renewed.

Joh 14:20 At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.

Wikipedia has a reasonable explanation:

The metaphors in the two parables [in Matthew 9:14-17] were drawn from contemporary culture. New cloth had not yet shrunk, so that using new cloth to patch older clothing would result in a tear as it began to shrink. Similarly, old wineskins had been "stretched to the limit" or become brittle as wine had fermented inside them; using them again therefore risked bursting them.

The two parables relate to the relationship between Jesus' teaching and traditional Judaism.

According to some interpreters, Jesus here "pits his own, new way against the old way of the Pharisees and their scribes." In the early second century, [the heretic] Marcion, founder of Marcionism, used the passage to justify a "total separation between the religion that Jesus and Paul espoused and that of the Hebrew Scriptures."

Other interpreters see Luke as giving Christianity roots in Jewish antiquity, although "Jesus has brought something new, and the rituals and traditions of official Judaism cannot contain it."

In his Commentary on Matthew, Mark, and Luke, John Calvin states that the old wineskins and the old garment represent Jesus' disciples, and the new wine and unshrunk cloth represent the practice of fasting twice a week. Fasting this way would be burdensome to the new disciples, and would be more than they could bear.

Matthew 9:14-17

King James Version (KJV)

14Then came to him the disciples of John, saying, Why do we and the Pharisees fast oft, but thy disciples fast not?
15And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? but the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then shall they fast.
16No man putteth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the garment, and the rent is made worse. 17Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved.

The mourning and the fast that Jesus spake of to come upon the children of the bridechamber was not a literal fast but a spiritual fast. The Lord prophesied in the prophets that the days of famine would come upon the land, but not a famine of food or drink, but of hearing the Word of the Lord.

This period of darkness would happen when the Bridegroom(Jesus) would be taken from the world. Just as Jesus said I am the Light of the world, walk while you have the Light. But Jesus also said the days would come when the Light would leave the world and darkness would soon follow, and no man would be able to work.

The parable of the old garment and new, and the old vessel and new wine and new vessel have to with the old nature in man(fleshy minded) and the new nature in man(spiritually minded) after recieving the Holy Spirit.

The old man nature(vessel) was under the law of sin unto death, but the new man nature(vessel) is born a new man in Christ. These are also shown in both the old and new covenants. Just as we are made a new creature in Christ(new vessel) so that we are able to recieve, and hold fast to the new wine(new covenant) which was given to us by way of the Body and blood of Christ.

Just as Jesus said when he took the bread, take eat, this is my Body, and Jesus also said when he took the wine, this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

But the old man cannot recieve the new wine until he is made a new vessel in Christ, just as many of the Jews of that day said the old wine is better, and desired not the new.
