  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Mat 7:1 "Judge not, that you be not judged.
Mat 7:2 For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.
Mat 7:3 And why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye?
Mat 7:4 Or how can you say to your brother, 'Let me remove the speck from your eye'; and look, a plank is in your own eye?
Mat 7:5 Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.
(NKJV)

Mat 7:1 "Do not judge, so that you won't be judged.
Mat 7:2 For with the judgment you use, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.
Mat 7:3 Why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye but don't notice the log in your own eye?
Mat 7:4 Or how can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' and look, there's a log in your eye?
Mat 7:5 Hypocrite! First take the log out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye.

Mat 7:1 "Do not judge, or you too will be judged.
Mat 7:2 For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.
Mat 7:3 "Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?
Mat 7:4 How can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when all the time there is a plank in your own eye?
Mat 7:5 You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.

In regards to judgment in this passage, I tend to believe that many, especially atheists and non-Christians, misuse this passage. They tend to throw this verse in the face of Christians who follow Scripture about different hot topics in society today. Christians are against abortion and sexual sin and a myriad of other issues in society. But, disliking an action and calling that action wrong and sinful does not fall under this verse, IMO. There are two ways that I look at this passage:
1) We are never to judge someone's Christianity.
2) We are to be as Christ-like as we can and not be harsh to other sinners because we ourselves sin.

So, we should take care to know Scripture and be as close to Christ's example and other examples in the NT. We should call out others who do wrong, especially in the church, but we should be kind when we do it. We should not be persistent with our rebukes, as we do not want to push them away from Christianity, but we should be kind and place our inputs in well timed opportunities.

God bless,
Dave

Greetings Daveleau,

3560 noutheteo {noo-thet-eh'-o}
from the same as 3559; TDNT - 4:1019,636; v
AV - warn 4, admonish 4; 8
1) to admonish, warn, exhort

Romans 15:14 And I myself also am persuaded of you, my brethren, that ye also are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish one another.

Col 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

1 Thess 5:12 And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you;

2 Thess 3:14-15 And if any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed. 15 Yet count him not as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.

You are absolutely correct, that we should "admonish" one another in love, peace and patience. However, when we are confronted with those who do not wish to change their sinful ways and they have been properly admonished, then the church is obligated to "cast them out of the church". If you want references for that I can provide it.

Blessings,

Dad Ernie

I was searching for that earlier today and couldn't find the verse that talks of approaching church members because of their sinful acts, but I can't find it even with all the books I've looked in for it.

It can be misused, but Christians too misuse it as well.

It does indeed mean a moral judgment, but Christians also must remember that only God is truly the Judge of some things. This includes whether a person is "saved" or not. Too often have I seen or heard hypocritical Christians simply say "you're going to hell" or "you're not saved" or anything like that. This isn't our job. We aren't Worthy of such Judgment. In fact, there is only one who is: God Himself.

So have its use been misinterpreted by non-Christians? Absolutely. But let us not forget that in some instances, God truly is the only Judge, and in those issues, we must always differ to Him, or least we will be Judged based on how we're misjudged or wrongly judged others.

Well, in the context of Matthew 7, Jesus goes on to tell them to judge (seeing the speck in the eye and removing). And even stronger in v. 15 "Beware of false teachers..." How are you to know them, except by their fruit - and "judge the fruit".

The key is that we cannot judge the heart (only God), but we can and should judge the outward behavior/words of the person.
