  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Matthew 27:24-25
When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. "I am innocent of this man's blood," he said. "It is your responsibility!"
All the people answered, "Let his blood be on us and on our children!"

Does this mean that the murder of Jesus is still on the Jews today?

But they can be forgiven like every one else.

Yes, they can be forgiven. Paul explicitly writes that there is no Jew nor Gentile in the Kingdom of Our Lord. No one is condemned, and all can be forgiven if they choose to accept God's gift. This statement highlighted in bold in the OP was a record of what Pilate said, and his washing his hands of the matter. He wanted to make it clear that he did not order Jesus' crucifixion, but only allowed it to attempt to play both sides of the politically volatile Palestinian population. There were many revolts before this, and Pilate was under pressure from his superiors and the Emperor to keep the peace. This is why he said this. There is nothing theologically significant in this statement.

Why would it? Just because a few ancestors of some Jews said something 2000 years ago, how would that make all their descendants and descendants of other Jews guilty of murder? Can a parent make his/her children guilty just by saying so?

But they can be forgiven like every one else.

Why not? They have nothing more to be forgiven for than anyone else.

On another level I think it's true for all of us. Jesus went through all He did for my sin and yours, regardless of our nationality. We all are accountable, not just for what happened but also how we respond to it. You can't accept Jesus' forgiveness without first acknowledging the need for it. If we didn't need it, He wouldn't have had to die at all.
