(Amended) Lawsuit claims CPAC knew of past allegations of sexual misconduct by Matt Schlapp

Officials overseeing the Conservative Political Action Conference knew about past accusations of sexual misconduct by chairman Matt Schlapp but failed to investigate or remove him from his powerful post, an amended sexual battery and defamation lawsuit claims.

In one alleged incident, during a fundraising trip to South Florida in early 2022, Schlapp was accused of stripping to his underwear and rubbing against another person without his consent, according to the filing. In 2017, at a CPAC after-party, Schlapp attempted to kiss an employee against his wishes, the lawsuit claims.

[Both cases were allegedly reported to the org, but nothing done]

The alleged additional victims are not identified and are not joining the suit; the court filing says their allegations were obtained through the discovery process.

Five board members have left the ACU [the org behind CPAC] and its foundation arm in recent months, as well as more than half the staff since 2021.

There is a trend here. The Mom's for Liberty. Jerry Fallwell Jr. Bob Livingston. Denny Hastert. Ted Haggart.

Well, we shall see. These are allegations. Let's see the trial.

Moms for Liberty is not an appropriate addition here; unless you are alleging that someone representing the group has been charged with sexual crimes.

Jerry Falwell Jr. stepped down because of the accusations of some young man but then sued, stating the exact opposite of Granda's claims:
“Rather than just reveal the affair Granda had engaged in with Mrs. Falwell, Granda threatened to falsely claim that Mr. Falwell had been a willing participant in the affair, even watching the two engage sexually,” the lawsuit explains. “This was not true. Mr. Falwell did not participate in the affair and he certainly did not watch Granda having sex with his wife.”

After that, Falwell says he told Granda “in no uncertain terms” that “he would not be extorted” and the media campaign against the evangelical leader swiftly commenced.

What happened with that suit? Well, Falwell and the University are still suing and countersuing each other, so far as I can tell. Granda, the pool boy, capitalized on his experience (which is abjectly refuted by Falwell) by writing a book and making the rounds of the propaganda outlets. No charges or anything occurred there and Granda's book admitted he did not have sexual intercourse with Falwell's wife (but did other things).

Hastert did in fact go to prison for 15 months for abusing teen boys and the financial crime of covering up payments.

Haggard was forced out of his church for his purported involvement with a man, and with drugs, but was not convicted of anything.

So I'm not sure what the alleged "trend" is here.

New Matt Schlapp Subpoenas Target Document-Shredding at CPAC

On Wednesday, the opening day for CPAC 2024, the Alexandria City Courthouse posted a batch of eye-popping new filings in the sexual battery and defamation lawsuit against Schlapp—including a subpoena to a CPAC official alleged to have overseen document destruction days after the accusations were first publicly reported. Schlapp was on notice at the time about potential legal action.

Three sources familiar with the situation told The Daily Beast that the recently subpoenaed CPAC official—manager of strategic initiatives, Lynne Rasmussen—directly oversaw interns shredding documents in or near her office shortly after The Daily Beast published Huffman’s allegations.

Mr. Falwell did not participate in the affair and he certainly did not watch Granda having sex with his wife.”

Following the affair, Falwell alleges that Granda attempted to blackmail him into giving him money, or else he would reveal the nature of the relationship publicly. Falwell says he was advised by his lawyer to remain engaged with Granda rather than breaking off contact, and that the ordeal has been “like a roller coaster.” But in recent months Granda’s behavior has become so aggressive, Falwell claims, that he had no other choice to go public. The dubious implication here is that Granda, not Falwell’s Instagram post and subsequent decision to step down as Liberty University’s president, is what prompted this statement.

The Falwells met Granda in 2012, after which the “ambitious young man,” as Falwell describes him in the statement released Monday, began traveling with the couple. The Falwells later gave Granda $1.8 million to open up a hostel in Miami Beach, despite Granda having no prior business experience. Politico would later call the hostel a “cesspool of vice.” A lawsuit followed. It was a mess, especially for a Christian leader who presides over the nation’s largest evangelical university.

Or he presided over it until earlier this month, when the Liberty University announced that it had been “mutually agreed that it would be good for him to take an indefinite leave of absence.” The decision came days after Falwell posted a series of “vacation shots” to Instagram, including one in which he had his arm around the waist of his wife’s pregnant assistant, and a drink in his other hand (Falwell claimed it was “black water” and only “a prop”). Both of their pants were unzipped. The post was quickly deleted.

And yeah, the stuff is on the net, but while it's a bit too risque for a Christian board, it's not going to give much satisfaction to those who like to see that kind of thing.

Well, Rollingstone is an exceedingly liberal source, so one will get the most slanted view possible; it is not the best source for straightforward information.

But yes, there was a definitely a conflict in stories told by the two parties, and yes, no one was charged. And Granda wrote a book, in an attempt to profit from the situation.

I don't think they faked the photos or Falwell's confession, do you?

I don't know what is happening here with the empty boxes. Sorry about that. In reference to your question of whether I think Rollingstone faked anything in this story...who knows. That outlet has been caught and lost lawsuits due to false or slanted reporting more than once.

Anywhere near $787 million?

$787 million is what FOX agreed to pay in settling the lawsuit with Dominion about the 2020 election.
Financial decisions were made. Fox can write it off if it settles, and it had been sued for a billion and a half as I recall. A media outlet CANNOT write off judgments.

According to the IRS (here, simplified by left wing CNN):

Settlement payments are tax deductible if the company pays out of pocket. When you run a business, much (if not all) of what you spend is considered a business expense. That includes the money you spend to defend the company in civil lawsuits that threaten to tarnish the company brand or otherwise harm its ability to make money in the future.

For income tax purposes, those expenses are deductible, assuming the company is not reimbursed for them by anyone else, and assuming the money isn’t going to pay fines or a penalty to the government, in which case a deduction would be disallowed.

In Fox’s case, a trial may have further harmed its reputation, so settling the case likely made the most economic sense. “This is the cost of protecting your income stream and profits, which are taxable…. It’s all about dollars and cents,” New York University tax law professor Brant J. Hellwig told CNN.

Rolling Stone is liberal, left-biased BUT the are also highly credible in that they list their sources and issue corrections when they make mistakes. You may not like their analysis, but their fact checking is decent.

Lawsuit accusing Matt Schlapp of sexual misconduct comes to an end

A lawyer for the accuser said Tuesday that the parties ‘have resolved their differences,’ while the Conservative Political Action Conference board of directors said there was a ‘favorable conclusion’ to the litigation

How many zeroes is that?
The Republican operative who accused American Conservative Union chairman Matt Schlapp of sexual assault last year received a significant financial settlement in exchange for dropping his lawsuit against Schlapp, multiple sources familiar with the case told CNN.

The $480,000 settlement was paid to Carlton Huffman through an insurance policy, according to a source familiar with the details. Schlapp’s legal team did not respond for comment when asked about the financial settlement, but on Tuesday said that Huffman dropped the lawsuit and Schlapp claimed he had been exonerated.
