Gaetz, Vance meet with GOP senators ahead of House Ethics Committee meeting

Former Rep. Matt Gaetz, President-elect Donald Trump's pick to be attorney general, met with Republican senators on Capitol Hill Wednesday morning alongside Vice President-elect JD Vance, making his case for the job hours before the House Ethics Committee was set to discuss its report on him.

Ethics Committee meeting on Gaetz report, will vote on whether to release it

The bipartisan House Ethics Committee is meeting behind closed doors Wednesday, where it will vote on whether to release a report on its investigation of former Rep. Matt Gaetz, who resigned from office last week after President-elect Donald Trump chose him as his nominee for attorney general.
This is what makes America great?

Well who else would nominate an AG?

Uh, yeah the President nominates his cabinet member so you are right President Trump is the only reason Gaetz would be nominated because he is the only one who could nominate him.

I don’t see a conspiracy over everything the President does and I have faith in our judicial system that if the man is tried and found guilty he will suffer the consequences.

You don’t mind if he get tried before we adjudicate him guilty do you?

Presidents normally choose between nominees who have been vetted.

Yes or No: Should the House Ethics Committee provided their report to the Senate Judiciary Committee?

Vetting comes in two forms - First the President vetts his candidate to determine who he wants for the position - second the Justice department then vetts the candidate for security etc. Considering Mr. Gaetz Since he sat on the Judiciary Committee, I'm quite certain the Biden/Harris administration thoroughly vetted him for such a sensitvie position.

I have no issue with the accusation being investigated. If found guilty he should face the fulness if the law - if found not guilty people should treat him as such.

Committee appointments are the purview of the parties in Congress. The executive branch has nothing to do with it. Even if that were possible, Gaetz has sat on that committee since 2017, predating Biden's term.

I hope Venmo has filed a Human Trafficking Suspicious Activity Report with FinCEN. If not they should be fined.

you just like to argue -

Was he vetted for his congress position?
Was he vetted for His Judiciary Committee position
Was he vetted for all the other committee positions he served on -

Is the Justice Department part of Congress or the Executive Branch

He is right.
Neither the White House nor the Justice Department has a say over who is selected for the House (or Senate) Judiciary Committee. But I suspect you already knew that...

You just don't know what you're talking about.
You think the Congress is going to give sensitive information to without vetting them first and I don’t know what I am talking about?
No, he was elected by the people of his district. Just like George Santos.
And banana taste good with corn flakes. Just as on topic
He isn't part of the DOJ (yet).
True and he would have to be vetted once again to get the position
The House Committee on the Judiciary is part of Congress.
That deals with secret and top secret information that.

Get ready

You have to be vetted for.

It's perfectly on topic. The FBI can't just throw away the will of the people.

That's a fair point; nevertheless, it's not part of the Executive branch as you were implying. And he was not vetted for his presence on the Committee. [see also #314]

To hold a position where you are handling sensitive information a requirement is to be vetted by the DOJ

But I suspect you already knew that….

Hogwash. If a person cannot pass the vetting process, he/she can not hold a position where they are required to handle sensitive material.

The Ethics Committee apparently deadlocked on releasing the report. Two members have filed a privileged resolution, which would force a full House vote on the matter.

Under House rules, once a privileged resolution is introduced, the House must take it up within two legislative days.

Obviously, the GOP has a narrow majority in the House, but maybe some of them want to see the report, or see what Marge has got.

There is no time to waste on a needlessly protracted Washington scuffle, thus I'll be withdrawing my name from consideration to serve as Attorney General," he continued.

He withdrew for the best interest for the country. Just like Joe Biden.

Gaetz has now withdrawn himself as the AG nominee.
Whaaat? I am so disappointed. This is the most important position for Donald to fill. He needs to find somebody intensely loyal to him. Obviously, knowledge of the law is not important, and might even be a detriment. But somebody bad at law might have a hard time being confirmed. Maybe Donald should wait until he becomes president, then surprise everybody with a recess appointment.
