Federal investigators scrutinizing Rep. Matt Gaetz are seeking the cooperation of a former Capitol Hill intern who was once a girlfriend of the Florida Republican, sources familiar with the matter tell CNN.

An ex-girlfriend of Rep. Matt Gaetz, who is seen as a key witness in the ongoing investigation into alleged sex trafficking by the Florida Republican, entered an Orlando federal courthouse with her lawyer on Wednesday where a grand jury has been meeting, according to a CNN reporter on the scene.

A source familiar with the case previously told CNN the ex-girlfriend was expected to testify before the grand jury investigating Gaetz.

Prosecutors granted immunity to an ex-girlfriend of Representative Matt Gaetz before she testified last week in front of a federal grand jury hearing evidence in the investigation of the congressman, according to a source familiar with the matter.

"This may be a willing participant who has a smart lawyer who sought an immunity deal from the government," said former prosecutor and CBS News legal analyst Rikki Kleiman. "The government does not give immunity blindly, they know what they're getting in exchange."

Ellicott agreed to plead guilty earlier this week to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and one count of distributing a controlled substance — Adderall. In exchange, Ellicott will “cooperate fully with the United States in the investigation and prosecution of other people” and to testify against them, according to his agreement.

Ellicott was close friends with disgraced former Seminole County, Fla., Tax Collector Joel Greenberg. Greenberg was friends with Gaetz and was considered the congressman’s “wingman.” Greenberg’s case helped spark the ongoing investigation into Gaetz, Ellicott and others.

Greenberg previously pleaded guilty to multiple offenses, including sex trafficking a teenager and defrauding local taxpayers. He's set to be sentenced in March and is also cooperating with authorities.

Zwick said Ellicott was a friend of a person close to Gaetz, and because of that he attended events or heard conversations involving the congressman that are of interest to investigators. Zwick said those events were “basically like what you’d expect at a college frat party,” adding that Ellicott witnessed “sex, drugs — a whole lot of it.” But he declined to say whether Ellicott personally observed Gaetz using drugs or having or paying for sex, or committing any crimes.

“He observed a lot of behavior that, if anybody saw it, would not think that it was the behavior you would expect from a U.S. congressman,” Zwick said.

Hm, I think a lot of us don't expect much from congressmen.

While this can be dismissed as tittle-tattle, it's tittle-tattle with a side order of immunity and an agreement to testify.

Federal prosecutors investigating Rep. Matt Gaetz over sex-trafficking allegations are also considering whether he talked about running a fake candidate in a Florida Senate election to skew the results, The New York Times reported on Thursday.

In November, the GOP candidate in the race, Jason Brodeur, an associate of Gaetz, beat the Democratic candidate, Patricia Sigman, to win a seat in the state Senate.

The Times reported that investigators had been told about a conversation in which Gaetz and Chris Dorworth, a prominent Florida lobbyist, discussed running a fake third candidate to siphon votes from Sigman and boost Brodeur's chance of winning.​

Charges Filed In Gaetz-Linked Florida Ghost Candidate Scheme

Three Floridians were charged Tuesday in relation to an alleged 2020 scheme to run sham candidates in local elections, part of a convoluted plot with murky links to Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL).

State prosecutors said in a press release that they charged political consultants Eric Foglesong and Benjamin Paris in relation to the scheme, as well as alleged sham candidate Jestine Iannotti, one of a series of no-namers to run in multiple state elections in Florida in 2020.

Gaetz has not been charged or formally accused of any wrongdoing in the case.

Prosecutors saidlast year that in one race, where the Democratic candidate lost by 32 votes, a Republican consultant paid $40,000 for a mechanic with the same last name as the Democrat to run. Both the sham candidate and the real Democrat had the last name Rodriguez."

There is now an arrest in that case.

The Miami Herald reports, “Frank Artiles, the Republican political operative suspected of secretly arranging a sham candidate to run in a key 2020 state senate race, surrendered to a Miami-Dade County jail on Thursday to face felony campaign finance charges. Artiles, himself a former state senator, was seen arriving at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, along with his lawyer.”

“Artiles is facing several charges, including felony charges for making illegal contributions and false swearing in connection to the election, according to a copy of the arrest warrant,” the report continues. “Prosecutors say Artiles offered Alexis (Alex) Pedro Rodriguez $50,000 to run in the race to ‘siphon votes from the incumbent,’ Democrat Jose Javier Rodriguez. Half was to be paid during the election and the rest after the election, Alex Rodriguez told prosecutors.”

Gaetz later used a photo of an abortion rights supporter to 'make his point' after she took him to task on Twitter.

In response, Olivia Julianna announced a fundraising campaign on behalf of Gen Z for Change, a 500-person youth-led group that says it seeks to create tangible change on “issues that disproportionately affect young people” and supports abortion rights.

“This is absolutely the most insane amount of donations we have had thus far from individuals, especially in such a short frame of time,” she said in an email. “On a broader scale, this highlights the extreme power of social media mobilization, and it shows Republican politicians that their cheap attacks and political theater will no longer be tolerated.”

She raised $115,000 to support abortion rights in 24 hours.
