  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

no it isn't. your physics is just appalling in this matter.

Then my all means you should take a look at some of the artical written by Dr. Gerald Schroeder. He has a degree in physics from MIT, so I am sure you will find something there of interest in the area of physics.

If the earth was spinning at the same rate the rest of the universe is moving, then there would be no light on the earth.

Can someone explain the logic of this to me? How does the rate at which the earth spins effect how light reaches it?

I just tried a little experiment while in my office. I had a co-worker spin my chair while I threw pens at it. The rate at which the chair spun seems to have had no effect on my ability to hit the chair.

Yes, it's rubbish. If the equator would ever have travelled at even a *fraction* of the speed of light, there simply would not have been an earth. The forces of gravity would not have been strong enough to hold the planet together. How this would have stopped light from reaching the planet is obvious: There would be no planet. :D *gg*

So John is accidentally right, but has no idea.

Quick rotation - no problem with that, but "quick" in the meaning of once every 14 hours, not once every 14 seconds or less... ;)

@W4e: Please explain what you think your OP tells us. To me, it's just a common scientific fact, but has nothing at all to do with the "freak" events in the bible, as they would have been quite a bit later (especially when we're trying to stick the flood into it somewhere...).

Maybe before noahs flood the earth was spinning so fast, its what held up the water canopy (firmement), as it slowed the water fell back down ( the flood).

I made up a new creation theory!! Hurrah for me.

You made up a new ad hoc hypothesis to try to save the theory of YEC.

And "creation" and "creationISM" are two different things. Evolution is also a "creation theory".

If you can speed up the earth so that a day is only 14 hours, than why not speed up the earth so a day is only 14 seconds in length?

Do you have the math to show that is not possible? Remember, the day is said to be 14 hours in length 4.5 billion years ago. But the universe is said to be almost 14 billion years old.

Of course if the day were less than 14 hours, that would be less than 7 hours of sunlight and very little would be able to grow with that little amount of light.

The earth is only 4.5 billion years old. It is not going to have a 14-second day because it has not existed for long enough, and the rate of spin would tear the earth apart (I think)

Your talking about two different things. I was refering to the expansion rate of the universe.

Let me ask a question. How can the Hubble Space Camera take a photo of the universe as it was 12 billion years ago?

Modern plants did not exist back then, so the point is moot. Also, there would be the same amount of light per year, just more light/dark cycles.

The crust is said to be 4.5 billion years old. It is said to be 4.5 billion years old in its current configuration. The earth was created with the universe.

How old is our solar system? Can you show that the earth has only been orbiting the sun for the last 4.5 billion years?

The Earth is thought to be only slightly younger than the Sun itself. Therefore, the solar system is thought to be roughly 4.6 billion years old (give or take).

So, when the Bible says that "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." That could just be a referance to our solar system and not the universe itself?

Your statement is predicated on the rate at which the earth was spinning. What does that have to do with light reaching the earth?

Let me ask a question. How can the Hubble Space Camera take a photo of the universe as it was 12 billion years ago?

By taking a picture of something that is 12 billion light-years away.

@John: If the earth were to revolve once every 14 seconds around its own axis, the rotational forces would be stronger than its gravitation. Simply put, it would disperse. :)

Also, the earth clearly was not created at the beginning of our universe. To the best of my knowledge, our sun is quite young in relation to other stars. I'm also not quite sure if I understood your question about photographs of objects 12 billion years old correctly. Therefore, let me reiterate:

Light travels at approx. 300,000 km/s. Multiply the 300,000 km by the amount of seconds in a year and you have the number of kilometers light travels in one year. The light from our sun needs approx. 8 minutes to reach Earth's surface - the sun you're seeing thus is the sun as it was 8 minutes ago. The same applies to the picture of something 12 billion light years away - what you see is the light from 12 billion years ago.

Since the light is there and time and distance calculable, we have to presume that our universe is at least as old as the oldest and farthest light we can detect.

Dave Matson's List of Young Earth Rebuttals:

"Presently, the earth's rotation is slowing down 0.005 seconds per year per year (Thwaites and Awbrey, 1982, p.19)... Let's do the calculation for [how long the day would be] 370 million years ago: ((0.005 sec/yr) x (370 million yr))/Year = (1,850,000 sec)/Year = (21.4 days)/Year

Thus, at 370 million years ago, the earth had 21.4 extra days per year.
."

Now, how do we test the hypothesis that both the earth's rotation and other processes have been consistent for the past millions of years? We check if they reinforce each other! Obviously, if two methods that run at a constant speed independently result in the same age for the same sample, they've been consistent the whole time. If one or the other sped up, they would be discordant.

"A study of rugose corals from the Devonian (370 million years ago), initiated by John W. Wells of Cornell University in 1963, indicated that the year then had 400 days of about 22 hours each... From the present slowing down of the earth's spin we get a day of 22.7 hours 370 million years ago; 370 million years ago is the approximate radiometric date of those rugose corals. And, a study of the rugose corals confirms that the day then was about 22 hours long. In this example we have a remarkable, if rough, agreement between two diverse dating methods."

Is anyone here surprised?

You just insist on making erroneous scientific statements, don't you? The universe is 13.7 billion years old.

The crust of the earth is the same age as meteorites and the surface of the moon. The solar system is about 4.5 billion years old.
