• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Hey, pardon me. But, I'd have to disagree with your remark. Many married men nowadays struggle with the big M as well... marriage is not the way out of such an addiction, becuase your wife's sex drive will definitely be different than yours. So... not sure if that's the right approach.

Sorry....

Marie O'S said:
I agree that stopping M is not going to turn off the sex drive of someone who has become addicted. For some time they will have to fight these urges, which may take a lot of prayers and the support of trusted friends. Also the Bible tells us that marriage was created by God as a safe and productive place for people to satisfy their urges, so maybe looking for a spouse would be a sensible step.

One thing that has helped is a free course through Setting Captives Free. Thousands of people have been helped through their Way of Purity course. You will have a mentor.

The main problem with masturbation is the lust that is typically involved. A guy used to masturbating while looking at images of immodestly dressed/nude women on the internet, on TV, in magazines and catalogues, or masturbating with memories in his mind of the immodestly dressed girls he saw that day at the mall, won't magically stop because he got married.

A wife should satisfy those desires she is comfortable with, but he has to get his lustfull behavior under control.

Praise God:clap:

Well, sure, but the fact is not all women have the same sex drive as men. And of course, there are times when we are sick, or on the rag, or tired, or just don't feel up to it because of stress.

And sometimes, we don't /want/ to have sex. Sometimes we know that we can satisfy ourselves better than anyone else can, and so we indulge every so often. This probably doesn't happen very often in a happy marriage with a healthy sex life going on, but it will still happen occasionally. I don't see anything wrong with it.

I too need help. I started at about 13, and it hasn't stopped. I didn't even care that I did this until recently, but I too would like someone to pray for me so I can get back on the right track of where I am supposed to be. Also, being in a southern college doesn't really help because most of the girls are pretty good looking, so that makes it all that much harder :(.

Guys, guys! You aren't the only people in the world dealing with this issue. In fact, everyone masturbates. Every person on earth has to learn how to "deal with" their sexual urges. The safest way is masturbation. The devil does not control your hormones; your hormones and body chemicals are beyond your control. The way in which you deal with those chemicals is under your control, however. If you don't satisfy your urges, you will be prone to dangerous situations like wreckless/thoughtless sex, and risk of STDs.

Looking for a spouce at any age earlier than 20 would be a pretty bad idea for most people. This is the reason why evangelicals have the highest divorce rates; they marry too early because of the pressure of their sex drives. And you certainly can't get married at 13, 14, 15, etc. when the problem is at its worst. So, early marriage won't solve anything.

As a Catholic, masturbation is a mortal sin. I struggle with this issue myself. I decided to give it up cold turkey as it was taking over my life. I have done it since I reached puberty as a young teen. I am now 33 and I was still addicted to it. Doing it several times a day. I was not aware that this was a mortal sin and when I found out it is I had to do something. It has been a struggle and I have only been about a week without masturbating but Jesus and Mary have helped me through this.

Here is a great web site about why masturbation is a mortal sin. Even if you aren't Catholic it explains why masturbation is a serious sin in God's eyes...I posted a little bit bit of the page here...

http://www.newjerusalem.com/bepure.htm

1) MASTURBATION IS DEFINITELY MORTAL SIN! FIND OUT WHY!

2) THE REALITY

3) THE ANSWER!

Why Is Masturbation Sin?

Masturbation is a sin because a person consents in their own heart to take sexual gratification from impure thoughts. It is sinful to indulge in the sexual pleasure that is derived from the satisfaction of using one's imagination to FIXATE upon obscene images, or obscene actions, or forbidden sex. Lustfully fixating upon genitals, or sexual acts, is idolatry. This is called: the worship of obscenities. This is the sin of those addicted to pornography. That's often a "guy" thing. Alternatively, taking delight in the lust of another, or consummating a fantasy of forbidden sexual romance, is the sin of adultery in the heart. That's often a "girl" thing. The act of masturbation is an outward act that confirms that one's heart and mind has consented to an inward act of impurity. Only by consenting to an imagined act of impurity can one attain [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse]. To attain sexual release, a person's will consents to LOVE something that is sexually impure.

A sin consists in loving something that God hates, or in hating something that God loves. Because God is pure love, in one sense there is no hatred in God. But there are actions that God regards with a COMPLETE ABSENCE of love. There are many things that men can do that God does not love. In so far as God does not love a human action, according to our way of thinking it can be said that God hates it. These actions are sins. They are often as hateful to men as they are to God! What are some things that God does not love? What are some things that, according to our human way of speaking, we might say that God hates??

Above all, God hates falsehood. God hates any form of lie, rejoicing in cruel lies, or in telling harmful lies about others. He hates any kind of injustice perpetrated upon his children! God hates cruelty, or the defrauding of a worker of his just wages. God hates it when one person entices another person to do something harmful to himself or others: like to worship evil, or to steal, or to lie, or to take drugs. God also hates impure sexual lust because lust is a false pretense of love. It is a gross and disordered counterfeit of what should really be a sentiment of holy love. Lust consists in fixating on the body of another human being as a sexual object - solely for sexual gratification. When a person lusts, he is making no lasting commitment to the other human being. He is regarding the other human being's body as a sexual object to be used for his own gratification - but nothing more! Outside of marriage, a person who lusts is acting as if he would take another person sexually to be his spouse: but he has absolutely no intention of actually doing so. That is why LUST IS A LIE.

When the subject of masturbation arises, it always refers to stimulating one's self for the gratification of sexual lust, or in stimulating one's self sexually while fantasizing about the lust of another person. In impure sexual fantasy, a person uses his own imagination as a pornographic tool to give his body the ability to attain sexual gratification. In reality entertaining lustful fantasy is embracing a falsehood of the heart and mind, in an act of abuse of his own body in order to attain selfish sexual gratification. This is sexual idolatry! God hates falsehood - especially worshipping a false god! This is why God hates impurity in all it's forms.

God hates the worship of ugliness, or obscenity, or bestiality. A person who might sexually gratify himself while looking at bestiality is acting as if bestiality is a good thing - when it is a hateful thing! In the same way: lustfully fixating upon lurid sexual pornography is a behavior that pretends that some obscene sexual image, or a lurid posture, or an obscene action is a good thing, when they are nothing but obscene and hateful images! These images are used as objects of false worship. These obscene images, be they real, photographic, or imaginary, are the objects of the "worship of obscenities" specifically referred to in the Bible. Do not be deceived! Those who willfully, and habitually indulge in these acts of impurity, without repentance, will incur eternal damnation. (Rev. 21:8)

God hates pornography because it is used to degrade human beings: both men and women. The sole purpose of hard-core pornography is to create and inflame degrading sexual lust, or to invoke unholy gratification by the enjoyment taken in the degradation of another person. Indulging in impure lusts, or taking delight in the lust, or degradation of another person constitute the sins of impurity. Masturbation severely damages a person's ability to accomplish the intended purpose of loving marital sexuality.

Holy sexuality is the loving donation between a man and wife of their own bodies to one another. In marriage it may be enjoyed for holy procreation, or to express romantic love, or simply for the delight that the freedom marriage affords the spouses to release the tensions of life. It may even be an act of charity! But it is always a privileged act of special intimacy reserved for spouses alone. Masturbation, by it's very nature clouds and degrades the purpose and privilege of married sexuality. Masturbation is a solitary act of gratifying one's own physical urge. Performed as a solitary act, even in the married state, it degrades the place of honor of the spouse! It often serves to sexually replace the spouse entirely! This is because masturbation trains a person to abuse his own sexual powers outside the intended order of God, in a selfish solitary way.

If a Catholic has committed sins of masturbation, he must confess these sins in the confessional in this way: "I have committed sins of impurity with myself (mention a specific number)." If a non Catholic has committed sins of masturbation, he must humbly kneel down and beg pardon for his sins, and pray to be delivered of such temptations in the future. Preferably, he would seek out a trusted person who understands this sin: and confess this sin or habit: as is appropriate. "Confess your sins one unto another, and you shall be healed." One must NEVER describe his sexual sins in such a way that it might be an occasion of sin to the confessor! One must never mention names, or details: just the generic name of the sin: and nothing more. If there are circumstances which make any sin more especially grievous, then one must mention WHY his sin is more grievous - but must never he be graphic or explicit about the acts themselves.

One must never provide images which would pollute the soul of a confessor. A trained confessor has heard these sins tens of thousands of times. He does not want graphic details: nor is the divulging of details appropriate at all! Rather - the confessor is there for the sinner who must honestly accuse himself before God, by submitting in humility to the witness of the confessor. Here, honesty is critical. Intentionally withholding any grievous sin renders a confession null. It is only the sinner who is healed by his forthright admission of his sin in the presence of a person who only acts as a witness of his remorse. There are many sins which, at first, seem to be most embarrassing to confess. But there is no sin that in it's nature is not common to all men. Every confessor has heard every variant of every sin hundreds, if not thousands, of times before. Absolution, and sacramental forgiveness comes only from Christ. For Catholics this is always assuredly accomplished by sacramental absolution given by the priest, who speaks not for himself, but for Christ - as an assurance to the person that his sins are indeed forgiven by his humble confession, and by the power of this sacrament.

This particular sin is the most frequently mentioned sin by men in the confessional. It IS a very common sin. Usually, it is a mortal sin. If a person is in a state of grace, and is striving to remain pure, it may not be a mortal sin if suddenly, almost spontaneously, one looses control at a moment of weakness. In such instances a person may not have given "full consent of the will." These unplanned venial wounds, however, are often followed by acts that ARE mortal sins. Once the spontaneous physical impulse has passed, a person may continue to touch only to satisfy unnecessary carnal lusts that are intentionally entertained! If these acts are done with decided forethought, then the will has certainly fully consented to commit them. As such, they are definitely impure and mortally sinful. Therefore, ordinarily, if Catholic people have committed sins of masturbation, they should NOT receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion until they have gone to Confession. Holy Communion is a very private thing - and no one should ever feel compelled to receive Holy Communion: no matter what the circumstance. It is most inappropriate to ask another "why did he not receive communion?" Such questions are ignorant, inappropriate and absolutely outside the bounds of any relationship whatsoever. Such matters are between the soul and God alone. Even wondering about such things is absolutely ignorant and inappropriate. A teen who feels he should decline to receive Holy Communion in the company of nosey parents performs an act of heroic virtue! Attending weekly mass is always an obligation. But, receiving Holy Communion is not! In Hispanic communities, usually only about 1/4 of the assembly actually choose to receive Holy Communion. It is more ordinary for Hispanics NOT to receive communion, than it is to do so. Their reasons are their own: and their reasons are absolutely private and of no concern at all to anyone else.

I'm sorry but I don't agree with you at all. You seem to be saying that the best way to deal with an urge is to give in to it. I'd really like a new computer but I can't afford it - should I steal one? And my mother had just made a lovely cake - I could eat all of it now, rather than wait for everyone to have a piece at teatime. But I don't give in to my urges because I understand that it would be sinful.

It's the same with a person's sexual urges. If a person M's, they are giving in to that urge. It will come back sooner, and be stronger next time. Plus, they may feel the need to go a stage further to satisfy it - into areas of pornography, premarital sex, perverted activities, rape etc etc.

IMHO the Bible is very clear that God created marriage as the place for the satisfaction of people's sexual desires in a way that is positive (because it creates new life) rather than destructive.

Hello LAWise520,

I believe that it is true, the more you do it the more you want to keep on doing it. I too am struggling with sexuality. Recently, I heard it somewhere said, what happens when you starve a weed? It withers up and dies. What happens if you do nothing? The weed continues to live and thrive. In a similar way, what happens if you feed your sinful nature with porn and images of that cutie at school or college (depending on your age)? The sin of sexual immorality continues to survive and eventually takes over the better part of your life.

BUT, what happens if we stop looking at porn, or shows like the O.C on TV and learn to "bounce" our eyes away from a sexually arousing source? We starve that particular sinful habit. At first, you'll probably find that you'll be thinking about porn and masturbation for a little while after, until it finally withers up and the habit dies. Job, an Old Testament hero of the faith, made a convenant between his eyes and God. He learned to "bounce" his eyes from arousing sources. To do this takes self-control and God's assistance.

Paul also appears to support this idea of starving our sexual sin as he outlines in 1 Corinthians 5:6-8, 11. He also tells us that we should flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness. Just remember that when the devil comes along, that you are the righteousness of God and just either listen to Christian music or go outside (or in your room) and pray to God for strength to ignore the sin. Pray without ceasing until the devil moves along. You also have to have the will power not to give into sin. I believe that this is the devil's way to try and stop God's plan in your life from coming as He planned.

From one battler to another one:
Good luck and God Bless,

Delta One.

Btw, you may also want to check out the book Every Young Woman's Battle and other such books from your local Christian bookshop for other assistance. Sin also appears to thrive in situations where it is kept personally. You may consider talking to a trusted person in your Church or your family about ways to defeat the sexual sin. Radio programs such as Focus on the Family and Family Life Today as well as speaker's programs such as Joyce Myer's Time To Start Enjoying Everyday Life, for example, also occassionally talk about the topic of sexual immorality.

1. Masturbation isnt harming anyone else. Give me one example where masturbation is harmful when done so within reason. By that I mean, not where someone does it so much that actual abraisions or something like that occur.

2. Stealing a computer and eating all of the pieces of cake are affecting other people.

Some real examples where it is wrong, please.

1. I saw one verse from the bible there.
2. The verse wasn't even quoted.
3. The verse was taken out of context and used to portray something that fits your argument.

Why are all of these rules thrown around? All of these things are extra. This probably isn't the place to debate, but if no one minds or I don't get in trouble, I'll bring up questions all over that post.

Stealing a computer and eating other people's cake is affecting them, whereas Ming only affects the person and no one else. Wanting things like computers and electronic gadgets are not natural body functions regulated by hormones; they are psychological and they can go away on their own without being satisfied. The chemicals don't. They always return. Our body needs sexual satisfaction on a regular basis in many of the same ways that we need food on a regular basis. We don't need sex to servive, but if we don't get our sexual needs met the desires continue to grow and grow and grow until all you can think about is sex, and all this sexual tension is mounting and it won't go away because it is not spiritual, it is physical and regulated by natural body functions. If the tension keeps growing eventually it will cause a sudden action taken to satisfy it. The action could be wreckless and harmful. I don't know of any person who has resisted satisfying sexual urges without growing sexual tension or any problems. It just doesn't happen unless the body stops producing chemicals pertaining to sex drive.

It's the same with a person's sexual urges. If a person M's, they are giving in to that urge. It will come back sooner, and be stronger next time. Plus, they may feel the need to go a stage further to satisfy it - into areas of pornography, premarital sex, perverted activities, rape etc etc.

This isn't true. Every time I M it is the same. The only time the routine changes in any way is about every two years when I become more curious, and this is purely pscychological. I never look at porn, have never considered premarital sex, and certainly have never commited rape.

IMHO the Bible is very clear that God created marriage as the place for the satisfaction of people's sexual desires in a way that is positive (because it creates new life) rather than destructive.

Of course. And I would agree. M is second to sexual activity within marriage.

well I have a struggle too, but I can take care of it. I can fight it, but I give in too easily, sometimes when I do it, it leads me away from God. But i keep coming back to God, because I'm not going to hell with some ppl in this world. God will allow me back and hug me, welcome me back. I can feel Him right now. (I am in school) YAY GOD!!!!!!!!

New guy here.

This is exactly why I searched out a Christain forum.

For those of us fighting this war, guys and gals, I HIGHLY suggest reading "Every Younge Mans Battle."
You can pick it up at any book store that sells christian books or your local Christian book store.

Let me throw some numbers at you.

"Masturbation cycles, your most likly to masturbait the DAY AFTER not at all."

"(For us guys) You body produces X amount of sperm when you fall into lust, your body basically prepares itself for sex. When this happens, say you struggle with lusting over a girl during the day, your body gets a chemical high and wants more. You get aroused and you body prepares itself for sex. Once prepared it needs to release the sperm it produces during this time. Your body sends out urges to release this sperm every 72 hours after its made."
So basically if you do get aroused you body will need that release some time or another in the next 72 hours. Say you DONT masturbait, though it made me EXTREMLY difficult to get you mind off of, you body will release that sperm in a "wet dream" or nockturnal relase. If you dont have a "wet dream" your reproductive system will dump that sperm into your urinary tracht and you urinated it out the next time you go to the bathroom.

If your struggling with masturbation I challenge you to keep your mind lust free and not masturbait for 72 hours. That urge created will subside, taking you into father away from masturbation and lust and into PURITY!

BTW you want purity, it rocks when you work for it.

All facts pulled from the back of my mind after reading "Ever Younge Mans Battle."

Thank and ill be praying for all my brothers and sisters in the same struggle I am in! :crossrc:

May 16th will equal my record of abstaining from any sexual immoral behaviour (masturbation, porn..etc). That will be 4 months. Lest to say, it has been a hard journey, but I've been immensly blessed by God since. The withdrawal symptoms were very hard and strong, but I pulled through like the Christian soldier that I am.

Some may disagree with me here, but I believe MASTURBATION IS A SIN. God has shown me this, while abstaining from this behaviour. I just want to encourage any of you guys that YOU CAN DO IT!...you sooooo can do it! You can stop this addicting act of self-abuse, because if I did...ANYONE can. I'm also helping out a few guys on how to stop also, and I'll be more than happy to help out anyone here. Don't hesitate to PM me....please!

I cannot thank and praise God enough for the help and blessings He has poured into my life since I stopped it. I've spiritually grown so much since, God's blessed me with a house, I've learnt to treat the women that I work with the dignity and respect that they deserve, and I see them as God's wonderful creations instead of sexual objects of lust. God has given me a sound mind, to better determine what is LOVE, and sex and how to look at women.

God is good!! He has set me FREE!!...and He can set you free too! Don't give up!! God bless you guys!!!!

I admire your determination, but it really is not about how strong you are to fight this. Don't assume you are always in control in that you will always come back to God. Habitual sin is progressive in nature, it will keep leading us down deeper and deeper into sin.The devil is a lot stronger than we are. It is by the grace of God and relying on His ability to help us achieve victory so He alone gets the glory!!

Well, today is the 16th of May...2005. I've done it.

God has helped me in these long LONG 4 months of abstaining from porn and masturbation. He's guarded me, encouraged me when I ran FROM the temptation TO Him, and I just cannot express how sensational this really feels. Looking back now...IT WAS HARD!! My spiritual life with God is awesome, because I'm FREE  .

I want to say to you guys, and to encourage you also...You CAN OVERCOME this! God WILL be there for you at every step of the way. God WILL rescue you when the going gets tough. I fought it out and with God by my side, I have defeated satan and now I stand above this conquered sin. Out of all the things I've accomplished in my life...my house, sports, academics, THIS is by far the most satisfying achievement in my life so far...and I'm even doing God's work in helping other people get off this self-destructive addiction.

Fight it out! FLEE from the temptation!! Run to God when the temptation comes! Whatever happens....DON'T GIVE UP! God LOVES you (yes, you)...and He wants you free!
