  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi I am Jennifer and I am 18 years old. I will be going to college very soon and I can see God doing great things in my life. I have recently had a problem about feeling shame and guilt for something I did. I have masturbated some throughout my teen years. It has never been an addiction where it has been disrupting my life. When I was 17 years old I accidentally saw porn images a few times at night just before going to bed. I was very naive then and really did not understand what was going on with me and I did not really know that porn could be bad. Then one of my mom's friends took us to a sex talk at my church and they gave us the talk about sex and that it is bad to look at porn. Once heard that I immediately stopped and never went back to it because I found out it was not good. Just recently I have felt guilty for doing this and this brought me to confess to my mother that I have masturbated. My mother told me it was ok and that should not.feel.guilty for doing it. I confessed my sins to the Lord and asked him to forgive me but I still feel very guilty. How to I overcome this feeling help!

I'd have to disagree. People take the "council" of Jerusalem out of context way too often.

That would be the only reason a wet dream would be considered sin.

Masturbation on the other hand is a sin due to being sexual immorality. It's a sin because it's giving in to lusts, fulfilling the desires of the flesh as opposed to the spirit.

Onan's sin was refusing to impregnate his sister-in-law as per God's command.
Scripture -- not personal opinion -- is the word of God.

Your argument fails because the penalty for violating that law was not death. The penalty was only the public shaming that you see in verse 9 below:

5 If brethren dwell together, and one of them die, and have no child, the wife of the dead shall not marry without unto a stranger: her husband's brother shall go in unto her, and take her to him to wife, and perform the duty of an husband's brother unto her.

6 And it shall be, that the firstborn which she beareth shall succeed in the name of his brother which is dead, that his name be not put out of Israel.

7 And if the man like not to take his brother's wife, then let his brother's wife go up to the gate unto the elders, and say, My husband's brother refuseth to raise up unto his brother a name in Israel, he will not perform the duty of my husband's brother.

8 Then the elders of his city shall call him, and speak unto him: and if he stand to it, and say, I like not to take her;

9 Then shall his brother's wife come unto him in the presence of the elders, and loose his shoe from off his foot, and spit in his face, and shall answer and say, So shall it be done unto that man that will not build up his brother's house.

10 And his name shall be called in Israel, The house of him that hath his shoe loosed.
The more likely reason that he was put to death is because he engaged in sexual activity while thwarting it's procreative end, by practicing withdrawal.

You guys are both right. He means what you're saying, you just expounded upon it.

I believe that, had he not had sex, and simply refused, he'd have lived, but because he had sex with her, and then chose to refuse, he was slain for the deceit, and sexual immorality.

Sex was a big deal back then. Doing this would ruin her, because she would be tainted in everyone's eyes, and she would get nothing out of it. She'd be significantly lowered in value to other suitors, and she would have just been used and left.

I don't think the bible ever mentions pornography as a sin either. In fact, the bible contains an entire book of pornography, the Song of Solomon. Is it a sin to touch while reading the Song of Solomon?

Ummmm not sure, but I can't say that I've ever masturbated while reading a book in the bible. Awkward much?

Is there any biblical verse that says masturbation is a sin? I have seen none in this thread so far. Shouldn't we try to be a little more biblically oriented in this conversation?
This is what happens when people try to claim something is a sin when there is no Biblical mandate for doing so.

If you believe you can enjoy watching porn, people who commit fornication, without sinning you are misleading yourself.

Come on now. If there were a verse that literally stated "Masturbation is a sin" people who want to touch would simply come up with a novel interpretation so that the statement is construed to mean something other than what it clearly states (e.g. many Protestant interpretations of James 2:24 or John 6:53-58).

Let me see if I am understanding your argument here? You are saying masturbation must be a sin because there is no bible verse that says it is a sin, which is intentional so that the verse can't be misinterpreted as saying it is not a sin. Do I have that right?

All study of life dictates that masturbation is more or less a natural, unavoidable construct of life. It isn't holy, but it's not inherently something so evil that you will be judged upon it.
It's not something you should do, as it's not in keeping with holiness, but to say it's something that is going to destroy your soul?
Meh.
If Christ were that demanding we'd all be in Hell right now for one reason or another.

Masturbation is not sinful. It's much preferable to do it than burn with lust all the time because you don't have an "outlet" for your feelings.

Can you exactly define what "lust filled thoughts" are? Personally, I have yet to find a very clear definition in the Bible.

These threads are always filled with conjecture.

Masturbation is not defined as a sin in the Bible, period (unless you want to do Biblical gymnastics to make it so).

What about lust... What about it? Please provide a definitive answer to what lust is based on the Bible.

There is nothing "unholy" about sex or masturbation. Again, look to the Bible and fill me in on the verse that indicated it's "unholy".
