  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Tai Chi is martial art.
It is a martial art but many practice Tai Chi without anything like sparring or any sort of contact or speed, which are martial elements.

Do you guys do any sword training?

Plenty of swords and sabers!
The sword can also extend the Qi.

Traditional Tai Chi is martial art and each has an application. The offsprings can improve health in many ways and certainly better than being a couch potato.

You don't need speed to knockout the opponent while not even touch them at all.

Tai Chi sword forms are really amazing. I have seen a few vids on YouTube.

I am not sure if you all saw the shogun jones fight but I was rooting for shogun and he seems like a good guy but that was literally sadening. After the fight I thought to myself most people will be in hell so I want to and you guys as well to pray for Maurico SHOGUN Rua's salvation and that he comes to repentence, PRAY for MMA Fighters in general and of course for those who are in need of a savior.

I first got into martial arts through Wado Ryu Karate Do. Both a professor at my university and a black belt (at least 4th or 5th degree, I think) from a few cities away. Got about to purple belt, fifth rank and then went into Tai Chi and did that for about 2 years, and I'd want to get more into it. I admittedly have difficulty in persistent practice, considering all I retain from Wado Ryu is basic fundamentals we practiced. The kata are all but gone. I'd be better off trying to do Tai Chi 24 style. The teacher is actually a former physics/engineering professor, but now he's probably semi retired at his age (60s, at least), but stands by Tai Chi as something that helped him when his job was getting him really stressed out and then he started practicing again.

I wonder if it's possible to incorporate both Tai Chi and Wado Ryu, even though they're practically opposites of each other, though Wado Ryu is soft in some sense, it's more hard in general karate strikes that incorporate jujutsu moves. Tai Chi, on the other hand, is, I believe, by its own admittance, a soft form of martial arts, so incorporation and syncretism of them would be tricky. Eclecticism, maybe, not syncretism

Yes. It is entirely possible.

My style, Cuong Nhu, does just that. It incorporates karate (Shotokan-based...probably very similar to your Ryu), Tai Chi, Judo, boxing, Aikido and a few others. Imagine doing one of your karate katas using the principles of Tai Chi. That will give you a glimmer of an idea of how it would work.

Totally agree with WalksWithChrist on this one.

I would even encourage a wide-range of study. It adds greater variety to what you're capable of.

Tai Chi offers wonderful teaching in internal martial arts, and promotes good health. While, Muay Thai helps one learn to use every part of their body, practically, as a blunt-force weapon. So it's very good to do that, studying multiple styles allows for a well-rounded martial artist.

Think of UFC guys that have a poor ground game..they have to struggle to make sure the fight never reaches the ground..if you're well-rounded enough you don't have to be that worried.

All martial arts, generally speaking, can easily flow together, it's all in how you apply it.

Ahhhh, NOW we're talking!!!

Started out in Kodenkan Jui-Jitsu in high school, made it up to brown belt (teaching rank just below black belt), then teacher moved away

Joined the Marines and went on a WestPac (Japan, China, Okinawa - where I was baptized! - Korea, etc...pretty much the Pacific Rim). Got to learn some Tiger Kung Fu, White Crane and Snake, little bit of Monkey Chuan Fa (interesting).

Came back stateside and got into some Paqua (what Jet Li's good character "Gabe" used in The One), and later into Aikido.

Now I teach self-defense techniques in MMA style from all the above, utilizing stop-hit blocks, joint dislocations, and Dim Muk points (NOT the nonsense you see in movies...the real deal based upon acupuncture meridian points).

I find that the self-discipline received from the MA's has greatly helped me in my christian walk, not to mention the exercise we get from a single workout!

Ah, martial arts. One of my favorite stuffs seen on TV especially when it comes down to Jet Li (Once Upon A Time In China) and Jackie Chan (Gangster) as well as Mark Dacascos (Crying Freeman), Matt Mullins (Kamen Rider Dragon Knight) and a lot more. Since I like it, I am planning to enroll in martial arts with a mastery of either Chinese or Japanese martial arts with punches, kicks, throws as well as swords/ sabers.

I have been fortunate enough to learn Kuai Shou from some very learned monks. Also, I hold the rank of Ustaz in Pencak Silat Harub. Been doing MA for around 28 years.
I had to lookup Kuai Shou on YouTube. It looks kinda like Wing Chun. Tell us some more about it.

Silat I have heard of. I watched an episode of Human Weapon about that style. Looks very cool.

Kuai Shou Pai / Shaolin Kuai Shou (SKS) is a southern Shaolin system of Kung fu that was very similar to Wing cun in appearance, however its principles go much deeper. SKS is not a very well known style but is a no nonsense system created specifically for "street combat" (Keep in mind the boxer rebellion and lei tai fights of the times).

The system is devided into 4 major groups.
Da -Strike
Ti -Kick
Na - Grab
Shuai - Throw

Each group is performed in long (Kicking) range, medium (Punching) range, short (Trapping) range, Close Grappling (Standing) range, and Dog (Ground) Fighting range.

The three Phases of training are Gong Lik (gathering energy), Fa Jing (Projecting explosive energy), and sensitivity training.

Knife, stick, and flexible weapons are taught at advanced levels.

There are NO tau lu or Forms in Kuai Shou, but instead, each technique is taught against a variety of attacks. This enables the Kuai Shou practitioner to utilize all techniques on all attacks.

Nerve destructions, Limb destructions, and Dian Xue (Meridian attacks) are greatly utilized in the setting up of any Shuai or Na fa (Methods).

There is also a very heavy influence of San Shou (free fighting) in SKS.

I hope this is what you were looking for.

God Bless
