He had hinted at least 20 times that he was going to ask me to marry him. So at the end of every date, when he'd get on his knees, I would hold my breath. Then he'd say something stupid, like, "Oh, I had a great time."

I think he knew that I knew he was playing a game with me to some extent. Either that, or he just wasn't ready.

As time went by, I saw that I should probably not marry him. There were a lot of behaviors he had that I knew I couldn't handle. I was sad, but I knew that if he ever actually proposed that I needed to say no. I prayed about it, and I didn't get an answer from the Lord.

The Lord did start to soften my heart. I began to see how earnest Jim was, and that he was trying. It seemed like, gradually, things turned in my life toward marrying Jim, like it was the right and inevitable thing to do.

One night, instead of toying with my emotions, he really actually proposed to me on his knees. I said yes.

My DH and I were supposed to be giving my best friend and her fiance a "thank you" dinner, for getting us together. Little did I know what the real reason for the dinner was...

My DH got to my best friend's house first, and I came after work. He was cooking leg of lamb! yummo! I won't bore you with the dinner itself! Anyway, after dinner, I began to help clean up when my DH took me into the living room. I really wanted to help...my best friend said, "we'll get dessert". So as my DH and I were sitting on the couch, my best friend and her fiance started bringing out vases of roses and lighted candles...they placed them all over the living room! there were literally DOZENS of roses! and lots of candles. I still had no clue and was thinking, "wow, this is a really nice atmosphere. we should have thought about this for dinner." When they were done, i asked my best friend what was going on, and she said, "don't look at me!" So I turned to my DH, and he was on bended knee with a box in his hand! My heart just lept!! I immediately "got" everything, and began to cry. He asked me if i would spend the rest of my life with him, and i didn't respond right away...i was still overwhelmed by all the roses and candles, etc. He was a bit nervous, because it took me a few seconds to get myself together enough to shout "OF COURSE I WILL!!!!" Then he placed the ring on my finger ( it was a marquis diamond). We kissed...lots of claps and tears of joy, and a toast...it was soooooo romantic!! I will never forget it!

(p.s. and to let you know how much of a true romantic my DH is, he actually asked my father for my hand in marriage 3 weeks b4 he proposed to me! I found this out later!) pretty cool huh?!!

We didn't propose really (nor did we have a ring), we just decided to get married - it was a mutual agreement, two days after our first date. We had gone to Mass, and afterwards to the chapel of Mary, where I noticed my husband praying very long. When we had left the church, I asked him what he had prayed for. He said it was a prayer of thankfulness for having met me, and that he hoped he could marry me in that church (my parish church). It wasn't a proposal, he was just being honest. It was a very romantic moment.

It surprised me in a way (my heart jumped up to my throat), but it didn't surprise me in another way - it fitted (we had been extremely open and honest since we met, and I knew already that this was the man I was going to spend the rest of my life with - I just didn't know we would get married so soon). So I said I had been thinking of marriage too. I can't remember what we said afterwards, but it was pretty clear that we had come to an agreement and we planned to marry as soon as was practical, and we consider this day as the beginning of our engagement. We set the date a few months later, and on that day we told our family and friends, and booked the church - so perhaps that is our more "official" engagement. We were married exactly one year after our first meeting.

Our story is very similar to that of RebekkaH and her husband :) We knew from the first day we met that we were almost definitely going to end up together, and ten days later we went engagement ring shopping and set a wedding date. No proposals either way, although he did do something cute and romantic once we got the diamond ring for me (we'd gotten each other sterling silver rings earlier on). We were married eight months, to the day, after we met. :)

We weren't quite that fast, but close. We met in my parent's living room, while I was home getting my car fixed. DH was returning a projector screen that he had borrowed and my mom invited him in for tea.

We had a conversation, and learning what line of work I was in, asked if I would be interested in speaking to a young mom's group at his church (he was the pastor). I said sure, and we left that he would check with the leadership and get back to me.

2 weeks later, he called at my office to arrange a business lunch. we went on that saturday, never talked business and arranged to see the sights, (he was new in town) the following Saturday.

We spent 15 hours together that day, and then next morning, I knew he was the one God had planned for me.

2 Saturdays later, he took me for walk through a lovely conservation area, and got really quite, then said that he had something he needed to talk to me about. I was sure that we were done, and that he had decided not to find out where we were going with this relationship.

To the contrary, he pulled out a book of poetry, and under a beautiful weeping willow, beside a mill pond with geese, and ducks and their babies, he read Christopher Marlowe's "a shepherd to his love" It starts, "come live with me and be my love, and I shall all thy pleasures prove".

We were married 5 1/2 months later. He too had talked to my dad, who's only advice was not to propose publicly. We had the first line of the poem engaged on our rings, mine "be my love", and his "I'll be your love".

We celebrate 15 years this fall.

Wow, that was very romantic!

Our relationship was helped by poetry too! On the day we met - at a mutual friend's wedding party - I started talking about poetry (literature is my life, my passion), and I mentioned that my favourite poet was Gerrit Achterberg (a Dutch poet), and that his poems always gave me a kick in the stomach because of their perfection. That very moment, my husband actually felt a kick in his stomach! Achterberg is his favourite poet, too. From that moment, he knew I was the one.

For me, it happened 5 days later (one day before our second meeting = first date), on the phone, where we talked for nearly 4 hours and read each other our favourite poems. In the booklet for our wedding Mass, we had put four of our favourite poems, two by Achterberg. And my mum read one during the ceremony.

After reading some of these stories I feel like I got ripped off in some way.... But at the same time I wouldn't change how my husband proposed to me....

Well, to start with, we met at church camp last year in June. We were out at the soft ball diamond and he was going up to bat. He told me that I could sit in his chair (I was standing there) while he was at bat. So I sat down. When he came back he told me to get out of his chair, I refused and said that he told me to sit there. So he stick his finger in my face and told me again. In my family, that is considered a threat, so my natural self-defensive reaction was to bite him. And I did. Well, we started dating a couple of months later. (But it wasn't like normal dating I lived in ND and he in FL.)

He proposed to me the day after Thanksgiving. Every night before going to bed I would call him and talk to him for a little while. Well, I had been awake since 3:30 AM. because I had to work when the store opened that morning. So that night when I called him I was dead tired. It was around 11:00 PM. We talked for a little bit, and i kept dozing off. Then he started saying stuff like "There's something I want to talk to you about, but I'm not sure if I want to tell you yet..." And things like that. My mind started thinking worst case senario... Something had happened at work and he lost his job, or something had happened to his brother.... finally after about 10 minutes I convinced him to tell me what was wrong. He said, "Well, I'm not sure if I want to tell you yet.........." and went silent for a mintue.. I said "Tell me what?" (Still half asleep) His reply was "I DON'T WANT YOU TO BE MY GIRLFRIEND ANYMORE." I wasn't sure if I had heard his wrong or not so I asked him what he had said, and he repeated the same thing. Needless to say I was wide awake. I thought he was breaking up with me, and was about to cry because we had been talking about getting married for at least the past month. So I asked him why, and his response was, "I don't want you to be my girlfriend anymore, I want you to be my wife. Will you marry me?" I said yes immediately, and wasn't sure if I wanted to strangle him, or be overly-joyed.

We got married on January 2nd of this year.

My ring was tied around my cats neck. One night while watching TV my Danny called the cat. When the cat jumped onto the couch I started petting him, and discovered the ring necklace. Danny untied it, and asked me to marry him. It was sweet.

My now husband threw me a ring from across the Harley dealership. When I asked what it was, he told me it was my engagement ring. No diamond, no romance. Oh well. :sigh:

Well, we had bought the engagement ring a week before so I knew it was coming. :D

A week later he proposed to me on the deck of this very cool restaurant that overlooks the entire city. It was where we had our first "official" date and kiss. It wasn't a surprise, but was awesome none the less.

After we had been dating for some months, probably close to a year I bought her a ring. I held onto it for a week or so, planning something big. Then one night we went out to a few pubs and then an afterbar and when we got back to our appartment I tossed her the brown paper bag with her ring in it. I think I said "I got you this. Wanna get married?" I think she said "okay". I'm not good at keeping secrets, I get too giddy. I don't think either of us really remember it well. Rommance isn't my strong suit. I don't think I'd change a thing though, and I don't think she'd want me to.

We where living in different states. She worked a 12 hr nursing shift and caught the red-eye, in at 1am.
Bam, right there on my couch, i asked her.

Not the most romatic thing you can do. But i am all about being spontaneous. If i had some super fancy anything, she would have seen it coming.
