  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It is about time. In fact, if you asks me it is about darn time they legalize weed outright.

I'm conflicted. I think that decriminalization would benefit us all by reducing our number incarcerated and taking a revenue stream from the drug cartels.

but what? You said you were conflicted which implies that there are reasons you would NOT want it legalized.

Long term use does a dudes sperm cell reall bad. The brain cells too, making an individual act like a space cadet. And then that individual gets crabby when having to go without it.
I know anecdotal evidence isn't really evidence at all, but dang. I've had to tolerate the "crabby" individual who's going without it too many times. It's NOT fun...

Sorry, I should have finished my thought. The down side is the potential for people who are currently dissuaded from using marijuana recreationally because they fear punnishment deciding to use it because that punishment no longer exists.

What would be wrong with that?

More people would be participating in an activity that Christ's Church has decided is not morally licit. In a discussion on the Catholic section of a webforum, I don't think we can overlook that.

First of all , isolating this comment doesn't mean I think should stand on it's own.

Having said that, I would love to I see prohibition come back.
With the Catholic church being given an exception to the law? It's not grape juice in the chalice...

That said, I know your heart's in the right spot. :)

Should that be a determining fact in the law in a SECULAR society.

From the Catholic point of view, yes. Catholic leaders have spoken on the issue of decriminalization of marijuana and have spoken out against it. Catholics are called to follow the directions of their hierarchy on moral issues that they speak out on, and civil legislation is a moral issue. There are exceptions, but they are exceptions.

Yes with the exception of the Church. separation of the gubmit and the Holy place. Plus, I doubt there are a lot of drunk driving accidents resulting from taking a sip of wine at Church.

Now for the alcoholic, well we just choose not to partake of the cup. I am not sure what priests who are alkies do, whether they have to chug the rest of the wine or not. I think I knew at one time, but smoking dope like I do I can't remember anymore.

We had an alcoholic priest who had to go for frequent visits to the hospital to 'dry up'.
[He was Irish to boot :D]
No one ever stopped him from drinking the Eucharist offering... so I dont know if the taste got to him or what.

I know. It's delusional to act like it's harmless fun. No one's od on it but weed heads generally aren't productive. They sit around smoking all day.

An unfortunate stereotype. I know several lawyers, office workers, construction workers, tree cutters, and other professionals who must use either or both their minds and their bodies on a daily basis to earn a living who smoke weed regularly.

I know both productive and non productive dope heads...it's not a stereo type. It's true. It lowers cognitive function and makes you lazy. Some folks will do their jobs, some will sit home. It all depends on how bad a dope head you are. Just like they 're functional alcoholics.

Alcoholics disturb me - seeing two people that had cirrhosis and have it - suffer and die or nearly die.
Moderation.
I do believe the body can adapt to weed. Just like any drug and it loses its potency without smoking more to find that relaxed high.

As for some - it's too potent.
Anyone not used to a substance will naturally be more susceptible to it.
People who over use meds for pain will have a harder time being under anesthesia because the built up tolerance.

There are + and - to this issue.

Honestly, it's about time! Hopefully soon we will have full legalization for recreational purposes!
It is inevitable.
In roughly a year's time there will be full legality on the entire west coast. The rest of the states will climb on board one by one, and once the tipping point is reached, the Feds will act to make it legal everywhere.
The only formidable challenge anymore is coming from the alcohol and tobacco lobbies, who want it stopped solely because they realize they can't monopolize on it, and they think it will take customers away from them.
Having said that, I would love to I see prohibition come back.

I think we should apply prohibition to cigarettes.
Cigarettes are one of two legal products in the US that, when used as directed, result in Death.
