Look at the size of the electronics now. iPods are tiny. They are not bulky at all and don't require any type of bag.

I often carry a back pack to work. I need to carry my practice clothes for coaching, as well as various books, papers to work on, etc... I have also used brief cases.

So, there are methods of carrying the things you need without using a purse.

lol wow, this topic is turning into a Biblical debate

Seriously, I don't really see what the problem is.....Purses are a total double standard. It's a bag designed to carry your stuff in. The only reason they have been geared towards women to begin with is because women have a tendency carry more than what they really need. Take a guys wallet, put a string on it and hang it on their shouder and there ya go, it's a purse!

Credit cards, drivers liscense, money, phone. That's all I need. I can understand a little lip gloss or chapstick, but I don't need to take my whole make up and hair accessories collection.

But you're never just carrying around an ipod with nothing else. It's always an ipod, your cell phone, a pda, your wallet, keys, and whatever other personal effects you have with you. I don't really understand this distinction between a regular "okay" bag and a "man purse"? Is it the way the bag is slung? Because if it is, what are gym bags?

I can understand a man purse looking weird if it's actually designed like a purse...but most of the bags you're talking about are hemp bags that are nothing more than a sack with a strap attached to them. How are they different from a backpack or gym bag?

a man needs to act like a man
That's definitely not true. Every person should act according to their own unique personality, not according to stereotypes.

however i do not see why we have men trying to breech the gap between male and female.
That's because stereotypes, especially those some people still believe to be true (as you can see in this thread), are harmful, so going against them is a good thing.

So, there are methods of carrying the things you need without using a purse.

Just because there are other methods it doesn't mean that they are better. :) It all depends on the person who decides which method is the best for them.

Ok, lets define "purse" for a moment.

What do you consider a purse?

A man carrying around a lady's designer purse would cause me to raise my eyebrows.

But a man carrying a gym bag, laptop bag, or messenger bag seems totally normal to me.

What is it that makes it a "purse"? Is it the size? The way it's carried? The design?

It's the design. Especially that smily face, half-moon shaped design. Many men's bags are based on easily definable geometric shapes. Such as the gym bag (cylinder) or the briefcase (rectangular box).

I was reading an article in a men's magazine a few months ago. It was written by a guy who had actually bought a women's purse. He was not gay, but his complaint was that none of the bags designed for men were as functional as the women's purse that he liked. So he had resorted to proudly carrying a women's purse. (I can't remember what kind of design in had).

And I will pray that one day you actually get a personality.

Fine. Since you're the one with all the *personality*, maybe you should take the contents of your George Costanza wallet and overstuffed pockets, and put them into a bag to carry around your shoulder. You could call it your "Personality Bag."

On a woman... yes. lol:D
No, on a man. If a man does something considered to be feminine, he's breaking stereotypes, and breaking stereotypes is a very good thing. :)

OK. Let's put it this way: Male is in the camp, female is outside the camp. Male acting female is too close for comfort, like the invasion has happened, and we are seriously under threat.
