macintosh vs. microsoft ?

macintosh or microsoft?

 • mac, all the way

 • windows! what else?

 • um, what are we talking about ?

Why do Mac users always have to put down WIndows users? Why do all Linux/Unix and other OS users have to trash on Windows users?

If a person likes Microsoft Windows then fine let him continue on using it and they are probably happy doing so.
Some may want to learn Linux and stop paying for their OS but not all.
Others do not like the feel of a MAC, I like to be able to get into the guts of my PC OS and MAC is not good for that.
But I do not like going as far as the Linux/Unix crowd or BEOS crowd either.

I use Windows because it I am in the IT Profession and in my area a Microsoft Systems Administrator gets paid more than a Unix admin and MAC well that does not pay well either.
You have to use what you do for work to be good at it.

Please do not take this as critisim in any way. I want everyone to see the other guys point of view like I do and maybe learn from each other.

Trust me I will ask you Linux/Unix gurus when I have a question. Feel free to ask me any Windows questions you have.

okay, macs are pretty (the flat screen one, but not the one with the round base), but windows in better.

i saw a pretty awesome looking mac at fry's the other day. too bad it crashed when i tried to open a program. but i was NICE looking. i hate all the other macs, and the way they look. mmm...i think it was clearish or whatever. but those other cheesy colors make me gag.

Actually, it's more FreeBSD and NetBSD in OS X.

FWIW, I just got a new Mac, because my wife's iBook died (given the shape it's in, I'm surprised it lasted this long). I will say this for the G4 towers: I've never seen a PC as well designed from a maintenance standpoint.

On the other hand, it's loud. On the other other hand, Apple's doing a free trade-in program to get a quieter power supply and case fan.

I am currently dual-booting NetBSD and Windows on my Thinkpad, and now I have a G4 for my Mac stuff. It's a trade-off; I actually like NetBSD best by far, but I like the Mac better than Windows.

I dualboot SuSE Linux and Win2k - win2k is really stable, Linux is probably a bit more stable but I think I need to make another clean install of it, it has a few stability issues probably based on never having used linux before. :)

Really though - to each his own, basically. Mac's are good for quite a bit (it isn't an acronym, by the way, so it's not MAC, I don't think :))

Microsoft seems to be in people's minds the worst possible company in the whole world. I don't get that. It's big. It makes money. So does AOL, but everyone (except those that hate AOL :D) seems to think AOL is fine.

So what's with the Down-With-Microsoft attitude? If you don't want to use Windows, then don't! Buy a mac, get linux, use unix, use net/freeBSD.

But even while arguing against the big bad company, they use their products :)

/me hates that, hehe

/me wouldn't mind a Mac either, but probably won't buy one

The first computer I ever used was a Mac but a perfer windows(totaly). It just seems so much easier to do things. Proably another reason why I like windows is because there is alot more programming options(I love programming!)

[pong]Windows![/pong]

While I don't think Microsoft is the worst company, it is not hard to come up with reasons to dislike Microsoft.

-Microsoft Outlook is now designed to save all emails (incoming and outgoing) to a hidden file which you cannot access via Windows.
-Windows gets more bloated every year. Windows applications are not reverse-compatible, so you do not have the option of not upgrading. This wastes the advantages having more processing power. People throw out their computers every three years. If this did not happen, computing would be much cheaper in terms of power. It's ludicrous that it costs over $1000 for most people to buy a decent computer, which for them is essentially an appliance.

Linux shows that the Microsoft-Intel upgrade treadmill is a scam. The only problem is that Microsoft dominates, meaning that there isn't enough software for Linux. Plus Linux does not automatically work with all hardware--again because Microsoft dominates.

So people not willing to tinker with Linux end up paying over one grand for an appliance. Then they replace that appliance every three years so Gates can make another billion off the latest version of Windows.

YMMV.

You can access hidden files from windows;
Tools: Folder Options... and set show hidden files to true.

You're right somewhat, but I object at the same time, to certain things - if Windows is why everything is so expensive, why doesn't Mac drive their prices down?

So I don't realyl see Windows as being a horrible company at all. Sure, they want to make money. Oh dear, that's awful.

If you can't stand people wanting to make money, and trying to make it so you have to buy more stuff, then you better not go to an auto dealership, don't listen to the radio, don't watch tv, and don't eat anything salty or sugary or anything that might make you want it again :D hehe

Yesterday at 10:32 PM Jon said this in Post #73 (http://www.christianforums.com/showthread.php?postid=706348#post706348)

When I said you 'cannot access it from Windows,' I meant including 'setting hidden files to true.'

The file is inaccessible from within Windows. You have to boot without Windows to access it. Of course, it's possible that folks in Redmond can access it while you're in Windows, but you can't.

So can I.

'Hidden files' is a Microsoft term for an option you can set on a file. Indeed, you can set your control panel to display 'hidden files.'

'Hidden' and 'non-hidden' files are not the only files on your system. There are other files that, for the sake of clarity, we will call 'super-hidden.' Microsoft Windows is designed to prevent the user from ever accessing these files. Setting your system to show hidden files is irrelevant. One of these 'super-hidden' files is a complete archive of all your sent and received email. Outlook dumps a full duplicate of every message to a super-hidden file which is user-inaccessible from within Windows, regardless of what options you set. Nor is it accessible from a DOS prompt started from within Windows.

Internet Explorer also dumps a complete list of every website you've ever visited. No, clearing your internet history does not prevent this. You can't even expect a basic Windows command to do what it claims to do.

Only comp I've ever known was Micrososft, so switching to Mac for me would be like difficult I think. I can't imagine having a comp without using windows, it's like, how do you do anything on a mac. LOL!

I use microsoft software on an IBM compatible at work and apple software on a mac at home. Both do what I want them to do, except the one at work is a little unstable. However, it has to run more applications simultaneously so that may be the reason for that.

I dislike the microsoft monopoly (they own a fair chunk of apple, by the way) but what can you do?
