  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Today apple introduced an ultra-thin laptop called the macbook air. At just .78 of an inch think at its widest point, apple claims to have balanced portability and power.

Height:
0.16-0.76 inch (0.4-1.94 cm)
Width:
12.8 inches (32.5 cm)
Depth:
8.94 inches (22.7 cm)
Weight:
3.0 pounds (1.36 kg)

The laptop runs on a 1.6 or 1.8 intel core 2 duo prosessor with 4mb l2 cache and 800MHz front-side bus. It comes standard with 2gb DDR2 ram at 667Mhz. The macbook air also uses a Intel GMA X3100 graphics processor with 144MB of DDR2 SDRAM.

The display is a 13.3 in LED backlight running at 1280 by 800 natively. There is a built-in isight.

Storage options include a 80gb 1.8in drive standard or a 64gb SSD for better performance.

The keyboard is standard for a laptop and it now has backlight with an ambiance light sensor. The is a large trackpad featuring improved multitouch inputs and gestures.

There is no optical drive in the computer, so apple uses a remote drive option to install software or make backups. There is also a separate superdrive available for $99.

The macbook air relies heavily on wirelss technology, so it has a wireless N and bluetooth 2.01.

The battery is rated for 5 hours with wifi and bluetooth on.

Also today, apple revealed update iPhone and ipod touch software, video rentals, and a improved apple TV with a lower cost. Most major studios have signed on for the video rentals and videos will be available in standard and HD. All music and video is available to buy or rent directly on the apple TV. Rentals must be played within 30 days since the date of rental, and they must be finished 24 hours after they are started. The ipod touch got numerous new apps from the iphone, and while this will come standard on new ipods, it will cost $20 to upgrade an old one (its an accounting thing). Apple also unleashed Time Capsule, a wireless back up device for all computers on a network. It will come in 500gb and 1Tb flavors.

No user upgradeable memory, (But they do give you "a way-more-than-generous 2GB of RAM" ;)
A Great price of either $1800 for the 80G HD Version or $3100 for the 64G SSD Version.
No Gigabit Networking Port
No Optical Media.

perhaps you would like to show a cheaper price 3lb or less computer with similar specs and additional features?

It fits perfectly in with regular consumer needs, evidently something "hardcore" users have lost track of. (just look at the flaming going on at appleinsider.com, some of its very entertaining)

Both battery and memory can not be replaced or upgraded because of their location within the machine and other component limitations. The battery itself is like half the computer and the boards are all wrapped around it. To fix that, apple would have to go with a completely different design which would ultimately just be a slightly thinner macbook.

Apple's site indicates that the RAM is soldered to the motherboard.

The majority of memory intense programs also require a decent graphics chip, and integrated graphics does not provide this. Gamers and professionals are the main groups of people who want more memory, and most of them were never in the market for an ultra-portable in the first place. 2gb is by far enough to run osx and most consumer level applications and the same with vista, although the latter may be slower.

Optical drives are basically pointless on an ultra-portable, especially in osx. Any program that requires an active cd to run can easily be mounted to a virtual disk within osx, and it will run fine.

Do you ever really listen to music with laptop speakers?

The absence of a second USB port is a nuisance for some items. Im not sure how they got the price, but it is high for ssd. It is within the intended market's price range however.

The Solid State Drive option carries a $999 premium

It goes to prove people will pay anything for overpriced junk as long as it has an apple on it. :\

It makes my 3 year old iBook G4 look kind of chubby.

Nice concept but if my iBook was to kick the bucket tomorrow I'd replace it with a regular MacBook.
Yeah, I had an iBook G4 and the power cable was "smoking", I had it fixed by someone (not Apple) and it stopped working again... but I am very happy with my regular, black MacBook.

I'd be kind of hesitant with a computer that thin, I'd probably break it.
