Some of the old hymns have the best teachings that the world has to offer, besides the bible. I would love to hear the lyrics to your favorites.
***Google.com has the lyrics to most song titles, just type title-hymn to narrow the search***God bless your day!

O Come Emmanuel

O come, O come, Emmanuel,
And ransom captive Israel,
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear.

Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.
O come, Thou Wisdom from on high,
Who orderest all things mightily;
To us the path of knowledge show,
And teach us in her ways to go.

O come, Thou Rod of Jesse, free
Thine own from Satan’s tyranny;
From depths of hell Thy people save,
And give them victory over the grave.

O come, Thou Day-spring, come and cheer
Our spirits by Thine advent here;
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night,
And death’s dark shadows put to flight.

O come, Thou Key of David, come,
And open wide our heavenly home;
Make safe the way that leads on high,
And close the path to misery.

O come, O come, great Lord of might,
Who to Thy tribes on Sinai’s height
In ancient times once gave the law
In cloud and majesty and awe.

O come, Thou Root of Jesse’s tree,
An ensign of Thy people be;
Before Thee rulers silent fall;
All peoples on Thy mercy call.

O come, Desire of nations, bind
In one the hearts of all mankind;
Bid Thou our sad divisions cease,
And be Thyself our King of Peace.

O for a thousand tongues to sing
My great Redeemer’s praise,
The glories of my God and King,
The triumphs of His grace!

My gracious Master and my God,
Assist me to proclaim,
To spread through all the earth abroad
The honors of Thy name.

Jesus! the name that charms our fears,
That bids our sorrows cease;
’Tis music in the sinner’s ears,
’Tis life, and health, and peace.

He breaks the power of canceled sin,
He sets the prisoner free;
His blood can make the foulest clean,
His blood availed for me.

He speaks, and, listening to His voice,
New life the dead receive,
The mournful, broken hearts rejoice,
The humble poor believe.

Hear Him, ye deaf; His praise, ye dumb,
Your loosened tongues employ;
Ye blind, behold your Savior come,
And leap, ye lame, for joy.

I love this!!
Especially the first two verses.

There are too many for me to list; I own 6 different hymnals and we include one every time I lead praise and worship. Hymns are, to the church in function, our book of Psalms. They contain the wisdom, passion, trials and victories of the last 700 years of English speaking Christianity. And the stories that birthed them are just as awesome.

Ok, then, It is Well, Horatio Spafford wrote this at sea, right over the place where his four daughters drowned in an earlier shipwreck (talk about sorrows rolling). It's an awesome testimony to the faithfulness of our God:

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

It is well, with my soul,
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
Let this blessed assurance control,
That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
And hath shed His own blood for my soul.

It is well, with my soul,
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!
My sin, not in part but the whole,
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

It is well, with my soul,
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight,
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll;
The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend,
Even so, it is well with my soul.
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

And Can It Be that I Should Gain

Charles Wesley, 1707-1788

1. And can it be that I should gain
an interest in the Savior's blood!
Died he for me? who caused his pain!
For me? who him to death pursued?
Amazing love! How can it be
that thou, my God, shouldst die for me?
Amazing love! How can it be
that thou, my God, shouldst die for me?

2. 'Tis mystery all: th' Immortal dies!
Who can explore his strange design?
In vain the firstborn seraph tries
to sound the depths of love divine.
'Tis mercy all! Let earth adore;
let angel minds inquire no more.
'Tis mercy all! Let earth adore;
let angel minds inquire no more.

3. He left his Father's throne above
(so free, so infinite his grace!),
emptied himself of all but love,
and bled for Adam's helpless race.
'Tis mercy all, immense and free,
for O my God, it found out me!
'Tis mercy all, immense and free,
for O my God, it found out me!

4. Long my imprisoned spirit lay,
fast bound in sin and nature's night;
thine eye diffused a quickening ray;
I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;
my chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and followed thee.
My chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and followed thee.

5. No condemnation now I dread;
Jesus, and all in him, is mine;
alive in him, my living Head,
and clothed in righteousness divine,
bold I approach th' eternal throne,
and claim the crown, through Christ my own.
Bold I approach th' eternal throne,
and claim the crown, through Christ my own.

I love that hymn! Please post as many as come to mind for us. There was one at church on Sunday that was exactly what the preacher was preaching about and his sermon sounded so cutting edge. And then we sang a hymn that said what he said but it had been taught over 100 years ago. I'll have to write it out and post it next time I'm at church, which is probably tomorrow night. The old hymns are great.

Crown Him with many crowns

Crown Him with many crowns, the Lamb upon His throne.
Hark! How the heavenly anthem drowns all music but its own.
Awake, my soul, and sing of Him who died for thee,
And hail Him as thy matchless King through all eternity.

Crown Him the Son of God, before the worlds began,
And ye who tread where He hath trod, crown Him the Son of Man;
Who every grief hath known that wrings the human breast,
And takes and bears them for His own, that all in Him may rest.

Crown Him the Lord of life, who triumphed over the grave,
And rose victorious in the strife for those He came to save.
His glories now we sing, Who died, and rose on high,
Who died eternal life to bring, and lives that death may die.

Crown Him the Lord of peace, Whose power a scepter sways
From pole to pole, that wars may cease, and all be prayer and praise.
His reign shall know no end, and round His piercèd feet
Fair flowers of paradise extend their fragrance ever sweet.

Crown Him the Lord of love, behold His hands and side,
Those wounds, yet visible above, in beauty glorified.
No angel in the sky can fully bear that sight,
But downward bends his burning eye at mysteries so bright.

Crown Him the Lord of Heaven, enthroned in worlds above,
Crown Him the King to Whom is given the wondrous name of Love.
Crown Him with many crowns, as thrones before Him fall;
Crown Him, ye kings, with many crowns, for He is King of all.

Crown Him the Lord of lords, who over all doth reign,
Who once on earth, the incarnate Word, for ransomed sinners slain,
Now lives in realms of light, where saints with angels sing
Their songs before Him day and night, their God, Redeemer, King.

Crown Him the Lord of years, the Potentate of time,
Creator of the rolling spheres, ineffably sublime.
All hail, Redeemer, hail! For Thou has died for me;
Thy praise and glory shall not fail throughout eternity.

Even better with the music!
We don't sing many of these any more - which I think is a great loss!

I picked up my dog at the vet where he had spent the night and on the way home I sang this song for him

One day at a time Sweet Jesus
That's all I'm asking from You
Just give me the strength to do everyday
what You want me to do
Yesterdays gone Sweet Jesus
and tomorrow may never be mine
So help me today
Show me the way
One day at a time

It seemed to make him feel better

there's a really old gospel hymn sung in West Virginia that one of my pastor's told me of. it seemed that, unbeknownst to me, it was a favorite at funerals!

Life is like a mountain railway
With an engineer so brave.
You must make the run successful
From the cradle to the grave.
Watch the curves, the fills, the tunnels,
never falter, never fail.
keep your hand upon the throttle
and your eye upon the rail.

Precious Savior, still my refuge
Till I reach that golden shore,
Where the angels wait to join me
In my home forever more.

His Eye is on the Sparrow

Why should I feel discouraged? , why should the shadows come?
Why should my heart be lonely, and long for heaven and home?
When Jesus is my portion, my constant friend is HE:
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me

I sing because I'm happy, I sing because I am free
For His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

"Let not your heart be troubled", His tender words I hear,
and resting on HIs goodness, I lose my doubts and fears,
Though by the path He leadth, but one step I may see,
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

I sing because I'm happy, I sing because I am free
For His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

Whenever I am tempted, whenever clouds arise,
When songs give way to sighing; when hope within me dies,
I draw the closer to Him, from care He sets me free,
His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me

This is the song from the service on Sunday that I was telling you about. It's such a beautiful hymn and was exactly what the pastor was talking on. At the end someone said "Can we sing ~The Lord is Risen!~ " and it was the next song on the overhead.

Christ the Lord Is Risen
Charles Wesley, 1707-1788

1. Christ the Lord is risen today,
Earth and heaven in chorus say,
Raise your joys and triumphs high,
Sing, ye heavens, and earth reply,

2. Love's redeeming work is done,
Fought the fight, the battle won,
Death in vain forbids him rise,
Christ has opened paradise,

3. Lives again our glorious King,!
Where, O death, is now thy sting?
Once he died our souls to save,
Where's thy victory, boasting grave?
4. Soar we now where Christ has led,
Following our exalted Head,
Made like him, like him we rise,
Ours the cross, the grave, the skies,

5. Hail the Lord of earth and heaven,
raise to thee by both be given,
Thee we greet triumphant now,!
Hail the Resurrection, thou,
6. King of glory, soul of bliss,
Everlasting life is this,
Thee to know, thy power to prove,
Thus to sing, and thus to love, Alleluia!

How Great Thou Art

Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art
Thou my best Thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word;
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father, I Thy true son;
Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.

Be Thou my battle Shield, Sword for the fight;
Be Thou my Dignity, Thou my Delight;
Thou my soul’s Shelter, Thou my high Tower:
Raise Thou me heavenward, O Power of my power.

Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise,
Thou mine Inheritance, now and always:
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,
High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art.

High King of Heaven, my victory won,
May I reach Heaven’s joys, O bright Heaven’s Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.

Stand in Awe~Truth

I long to leave this world
behind me/with it's hatred
pain and fear/ when I'm
reminded of my journay/That
I'm just a pilgrim here/And my
eyes begin to fill with tears

That's when I think about
eternity/In a place I've never
seen/I wonder how it's gonna
be/And I'm caught up in a
dream/Where I find myself
at Jesus feet.

And I stand in awe of one so
holy/I stand amazed before
His majesty/And soon I find
myself no longer standing/But
bowing down in His glory/
Knowing I'm unworthy/
Until His Hand of mercy/
Raises me again to stand in
awe.

Someday my dream will be
reality when he finally takes us
home/From every nation, tribe,
and famoly/He will come to
claim His own/And we'll find
ourselves before
His throne/Before His throne.

And we'll stand in awe of One
so holy/We'll stand amazed
before his majesty/and soon
we'll find ourselves no longer
standing/But bowing down in
His glory/Knowing we're
unworthy/Until His hand of
mercy/Raises us again to
stand in awe.

Thus bowing down in His
glory/Knowing I'm
unworthy/Until His hand of
mercy raises me again/To
stand in awe/We'll stand in
awe.

Is your all on the Alter

  1. You have longed for sweet peace,
    And for faith to increase,
    And have earnestly, fervently prayed;
    But you cannot have rest,
    Or be perfectly blest,
    Until all on the altar is laid.
    • Refrain:
      Is your all on the altar of sacrifice laid?
      Your heart does the Spirit control?
      You can only be blest,
      And have peace and sweet rest,
      As you yield Him your body and soul.
  2. Would you walk with the Lord,
    In the light of His word,
    And have peace and contentment alway?
    You must do His sweet will,
    To be free from all ill,
    On the altar your all you must lay.
  3. Refrain:
    Is your all on the altar of sacrifice laid?
    Your heart does the Spirit control?
    You can only be blest,
    And have peace and sweet rest,
    As you yield Him your body and soul
  4. Oh, we never can know
    What the Lord will bestow
    Of the blessings for which we have prayed,
    Till our body and soul
    He doth fully control,
    And our all on the altar is laid.
  5. Refrain:
    Is your all on the altar of sacrifice laid?
    Your heart does the Spirit control?
    You can only be blest,
    And have peace and sweet rest,
    As you yield Him your body and soul
  6. Who can tell all the love
    He will send from above,
    And how happy our hearts will be made;
    Of the fellowship sweet
    We shall share at His feet,
    When our all on the altar is laid.

O FOR A THOUSAND TONGUES TO SING
Charles Wesley

O for a thousand tongues to sing
My great Redeemer’s praise,
The glories of my God and King,
The triumphs of His grace!

My gracious Master and my God,
Assist me to proclaim,
To spread through all the earth abroad
The honors of Thy name.

Jesus! the name that charms our fears,
That bids our sorrows cease;
’Tis music in the sinner’s ears,
’Tis life, and health, and peace.

He breaks the power of canceled sin,
He sets the prisoner free;
His blood can make the foulest clean,
His blood availed for me.

He speaks, and, listening to His voice,
New life the dead receive,
The mournful, broken hearts rejoice,
The humble poor believe.

Hear Him, ye deaf; His praise, ye dumb,
Your loosened tongues employ;
Ye blind, behold your Savior come,
And leap, ye lame, for joy.

In Christ your Head, you then shall know,
Shall feel your sins forgiven;
Anticipate your heaven below,
And own that love is heaven.

Glory to God, and praise and love
Be ever, ever given,
By saints below and saints above,
The church in earth and heaven.

On this glad day the glorious Sun
Of Righteousness arose;
On my benighted soul He shone
And filled it with repose.

Sudden expired the legal strife,
’Twas then I ceased to grieve;
My second, real, living life
I then began to live.

Then with my heart I first believed,
Believed with faith divine,
Power with the Holy Ghost received
To call the Savior mine.

I felt my Lord’s atoning blood
Close to my soul applied;
Me, me He loved, the Son of God,
For me, for me He died!

I found and owned His promise true,
Ascertained of my part,
My pardon passed in heaven I knew
When written on my heart.

Look unto Him, ye nations, own
Your God, ye fallen race;
Look, and be saved through faith alone,
Be justified by grace.

See all your sins on Jesus laid:
The Lamb of God was slain,
His soul was once an offering made
For every soul of man.

Awake from guilty nature’s sleep,
And Christ shall give you light,
Cast all your sins into the deep,
And wash the Æthiop white.

Harlots and publicans and thieves
In holy triumph join!
Saved is the sinner that believes
From crimes as great as mine.

Murderers and all ye hellish crew
In holy triumph join!
Believe the Savior died for you;
For me the Savior died.

With me, your chief, ye then shall know,
Shall feel your sins forgiven;
Anticipate your heaven below,
And own that love is heaven.

Glorious Church Life

1. Jesus, our wonderful Shepherd

Brought us right of the fold

Into His pasture so plenteous,

Into His riches untold.

Glorious church life,

Feasting from such a rich store!

Here where we're dwelling in oneness

God commands life evermore.

2. In the divisions He sought us,
Weary and famished for food;
Into the good land He brought us,
Oh, to our spirit how good!

3. Jesus Himself is our pasture,
He is the food that we eat;
We as His sheep are fed richly
Each time, whenever we meet.

4. Dwell we here on a high mountain,
Wet with the morning-fresh dew,
Slaking our thirst at the fountain,
Water so living and new.

5. Christ is our rest and enjoyment,
Here we have nothing to fear;
Here all the sheep dwell securely,
Kept by His presence so dear.

Great High Priest
(Heb. 4:14-16,)

Having therefore a great High Priest

Who has passed through the heavens,
Jesus, the Son of God,

Let us hold fast the confession,

Let us hold fast the faith.

Chorus 1:

For we do not have a High Priest

Who cannot be touched with the feeling of our weaknesses,

But One who has been tempted in all respects

Like us, like us, yet without sin.

After death, Jesus rose
And ascended,
To be our High Priest,

To bear us in the presence of God,

And to care for all our needs.

Chorus 2:

Let us therefore come forward
With boldness to the throne of grace

That we may receive mercy and find grace

For timely help, for timely help,

Let us therefore come forward.

God's mercy and grace are always available to us.
However, we need to receive and find them

By exercising our spirit
To come, to come to the throne of grace

And contact our High Priest,

Who is touched with the feeling of all our weaknesses,

who is touched with the feeling of all our weaknesses.

(Repeat Chorus 2)

For the Beauty of the Earth

For the beauty of the earth,
for the glory of the skies,
for the love which from our birth
over and around us lies;
Lord of all, to thee we raise
this our hymn of grateful praise.

2. For the beauty of each hour
of the day and of the night,
hill and vale, and tree and flower,
sun and moon, and stars of light;
Lord of all, to thee we raise
this our hymn of grateful praise.

3. For the joy of ear and eye,
for the heart and mind's delight,
for the mystic harmony,
linking sense to sound and sight;
Lord of all, to thee we raise
this our hymn of grateful praise.

4. For the joy of human love,
brother, sister, parent, child,
friends on earth and friends above,
for all gentle thoughts and mild;
Lord of all, to thee we raise
this our hymn of grateful praise.

to the world so freely given,
for that great, great love of thine,
peace on earth, and joy in heaven:
Lord of all, to thee we raise
this our hymn of grateful praise
