I started praying the Lutheran version of the standard 5 decade rosary this Lent. For a complete version (to include the prayers) follow these directions to the orthodox Lutheran site.

Check out this web page...scroll down to the bottom of the page to find a discussion on the Rosary and a way to pray the Lutheran Rosary.

And for those reluctant to follow the link but want a quick understanding here is information (ever so slightly modified) from the site:

1. Kiss the crucifix (opt.); Holding the crucifix, say the Invocation and make the sign of the cross; Holding the crucifix, say the Apostles Creed
2. Holding the first bead, say the Our Father
3. On each of the next three beads, say the Jesus Prayer
4. On the chain, say the Doxology
5. On the large bead, say the Our Father and reflect on the first mystery
6. On each of the next ten beads, say the Jesus Prayer, reflecting on the first mystery
7. Holding the chain, say the Doxology
Repeat steps 5-7 for each mystery, moving around the rosary

8. Holding the medal, say any prayer from the heart, the pre-Trent Hail Mary, part of the Magnificat, or Martin Luther’s evangelical praise of the Mother of God
9. Holding the crucifix, end with the Invocation and make the sign of the cross; kiss the crucifix (opt.)

The five sorrowful mysteries
  • The Agony in the Garden (Luke 22: 39-46)
  • The Scourging (Mark 15: 6-15)
  • The Crowning with Thorns (John 19: 1-8)
  • The Carrying of the Cross (John 19: 16-22)
  • The Crucifixion (John 19: 25-30)
After each Our Father and before the decade of Jesus Prayers, read the Scripture related to each mystery.

(My personal preference for number 8 is the Magnificat.)

The Sorrowful Mysteries are perfect for Lenten devotions. The Glorious Mysteries will be great for after Lent.

Peace

Rose

Wow! I've been wondering this very thing for quite sometime now. My SS kids have asked and I haven't known what to tell them.

God is so cool for leading me to this site!

Yay!

Thanks for all the great info everyone! I do believe I'll be finding a rosary and getting a bit more prayerful!

Love n Blessings!

I use the wreath of Christ, and nowadays specially the beads of my own secrets (mystery beads) have become important to me. It's so comforting to know that God knows everything and even if I don't have words, He knows and takes care. Touching beads is already a prayer.

During this Eastertime red bead of Love reminds me of Holy Supper and what it means and black bead of Night is also in Jesus' hand when he shouts on the cross alone and after silent moments there will be a joyful Easter morning and I can hold white bead of resurrection in my hand and say: You have won the death, you can give me zest for life and courage to live.

Have a blessed and joyful Easter.

Wow! I heard about the prayer beads when in Sweden last August and I have them as well. It would be great to see this concept become popular in other parts of the world as well.

helmikaarina: I didn't know there is now a webpage about it in English. Very cool! Thanks for the link! I'm wondering why they chose to translate it as Pearls of life. Quite different than the original name.

I agree, it's wonderful to see how these humble beads of prayer from Sweden are slowly spreading all over the world Finland, Norway, India, Germany, Japan, Britain, Hong Kong, USA, Denmark...

This English webpage by VERBUM has been only for some weeks, no wonder you didn't know. I have had mine "unofficial site for the wreath of Christ (Pearls of Life) for a little longer.

The original name Fralsarkransen has double meaning in Swedish and it makes it difficult to translate it in any language. Frälsakransen means both the wreath of Christ and a life buoy. In Norway and Denmark the pearls are called Kristuskransen (the wreath of Christ), in Germany Perlen des Glaubens (beads of faith), in Finland Rukoushelmet (beads of prayer). First I preferred English name the wreath of Christ, but now I think that the pearls (or beads, or wreath) of Life tells more about what the beads mean. They are in so many ways linked to Life - Christ's and ours - and also to our walk (life) with Christ, religious life. So in it's meaning 'Pearls of Life' isn't so different from the original name.

I have recently received a set of Pearls of Life, and on one of the websites (http://www.rukoushelmet.net/English.htm), it talks about saying the Lord's Blessing at the end of the beads. I'm not sure what that is-would it be "The Lord bless you and keep you...", or is there something else I'm not thinking of?

It is The Lord bless you and keep you... holding the sixth pearl of silence and after it you return to the golden pearl of God and say Our Father. And I use to pray it then "May the Lord bless us and keep us..."

But it is also possible to use only the beads of silence and go through the six prayers in Lord's blessing. I haven't translated texts for it, but I could do it now. So next time you visit the link you mentioned there may be these prayers too combined with the pearls of silence.

BTW I'm curious to know where did you got Pearls of Life?

Thank you for clearing that up. I figured it was probably the Benediction, but I wanted to be sure.

I'm not sure what you mean by using only the beads of silence and the six prayers-could you explain a little bit more, please?

I got the Pearls of Life through a website; I had been researching the Pearls, and stumbled across a website that had pricing in Krones and another European currency. I e-mailed the host and asked about Canadian pricing, and he offered to send me a set or Pearls. He was negotiating with Augsburg Fortress to bring the Pearls to Canada and the US.

Thank you again for your assistance. :)

I'm delighted about your message. That means that some of these days you can buy Pearls of Life from Canada and US. Now I have put a new link on english site for "rukoushelmet" (pearls of Life) where you can see how it goes with the pearls of silence and prayers of Lord's blessing.

Martin Lonnebo told once that he may stay silent for half an hour or so only holding one of the pearls of silence between his fingers and meditating and praying for one of those prayers.

Bless you.

I just received an order of key chains from fortress/augsberg that I'm going to use for the ones I'm going to make...There was a web-site that had just a line of beads instead of a round circle of beads...I'm going to try to make some of those...with the luther rose on the end instead of a cross (i mean...the luther rose has a cross on it...so I'm assuming that's cool)...I'm really quite excited about this...I'm still using an Anglican rosery that a friend of mine made me...that and the "wreath of CHRIST" that helmikaarina sent me (which I love BTW)...I still want one that's uniquely Lutheran and uniquely me...

You're welcome. :) It had brown and blue, didn't it?
Yep, & a few clear ones.

I never got into the practice of praying the Rosary, I usually have it hanging on my rear-view mirror in my car. I really enjoy the looks I get from my 'evangelical' friends when they see it. :D
