Quick Story> I got a great job With a very large and Internationally know Resort / Hotel Chain. I am very happy they take very good care of their employees and have opened up a world of opertunities for advancement while Im in school and even some oppertunities after I finish school. Now here is my problem I work in the pool department as a pool guy / lifeguard. Now I am a guy and do guy things by nature such as check out the ladies. The only problem is the ladies show alot of skin (its the pool). My question: Is checking out the ladies wrong? What exactly defines lust?

I lean towards extent of thoughts in determining whether something is lust. The modern definition of lust is refering to sexual desire. When your "checking them out" are you noting to yourself that they look good or are you thinking "I wish I could jump them"?
If the latter is the case then it's lust and something you need to attack head on. If it's the former...the bible doesn't say that admiring beauty is a sin.
I'm sure one of our more knowledgeable members will be able to give a more biblically based answer.

While I cannot give a more biblically based answer, I definately agree with Marissa. It really comes down to what is in your mind. For instance there is a definate difference between noticing a woman in binkini and thinking "Wow, she's beautiful" and thinking "Look at that nice pair of (insert radom slang for breasts)". You see what I mean? Another way of putting it is do a mental check: Are you kinda just looking at her, or are you staring at her boobs and butt?

Heres my take.
Theres no right answer.
For my personally. I have to try and stay away from public pools and some beaches altogether (i understand thats not an option for you). Seeing so so so much skin I would end up stumbling. It would feed my eyes then my spirit then I would act on them. I would eventually give into temptation. It wouldnt start out lustfully. Mostly it would start out thoughts like this. ''dang it!!!!!! why do these girls have to where next to nothing'' next ''this is dumb shes walked by me 10 times in 5 minutes w/ nothing on I didnt look the first time why wont she just leave me alone'' after awhile ''wow shes really cute'' after awhile longer ''ya i'd have sex w/ her forsure i just hope she doesnt talk to me'' next thing you know I'm going after her to talk to her.
So for me I have to stay away from that stuff altogether. Theres no sense in an alcoholic working in a bar. All in all try and stay pure! If its Gods will for you to work there maybe he just wants to work on you even your iner most thoughts that you'd be able to over come even the worst of temptation.

definitely pray lots about it, and ask God to help you keep your mind pure.
If you have a huge problem with it, I would recommend looking for a different job. But otherwise, pray about it lots, maybe get a close friend to keep you accountable, and keep reminding yourself and training your mind to keep your thoughts innocent.

If you look at these women, and think "wow she is attractive". I do not think there is anything wrong with that. However, if you look at them, and start fantasizing and having sexual thoughts about them, then you are lusting. If this is a problem for you, you need to take it to the Lord in prayer.

prayeris the answer...i myself have stuggled with lust...say a prayer...sing ahymn in your head...ask God to help you...i asked a christian friend once how he pushed away lusts..."it is a mind set"...i truly believe this...you need to learn to think differently...pray about it...i am using this advice myself...

I can control the thoughts - Not a huge prob...
Its the eye control.... I think it might be instinct or something.... Ohwell I hope I am only in the dept for a few months then I am hopeing to get into the engineering dept (pray for me if you get a chance...)

You can choose to look away, though. You don't have to stare for a full minute. I've been reading a good book on this subject called "Every Young Man's Battle." Among other things it talks about bouncing your eyes- something which you probably ought to do as a lifeguard anyway, as you need to make sure EVERYBODY is safe, not causing problems, etc.

Control is the key word there and you said you seem to have it so you will be fine. It's when you loose that control when problems start to arise. My own opinion is that it's ok to check out the ladies. It's a instinctive thing and is something that occurs even before you realise your doing it
