  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Luke 9:23 NASB

23 And He was saying to them all, “If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Me.

..deny himself.. take up his cross.. daily..

What does it mean: 'deny himself', and 'take up his cross'...

Also, this must be done daily, if we are to be a followers of jesus. This sounds like more than a one-time shift in belief.. it sounds like something I must struggle with daily.

What is really being asked of the Christian follower here?

“Denying oneself” means laying down self-rule.
“Taking up the cross” means remaining loyal to God’s Kingdom, even at a cost.
“Daily” means renewing covenant faithfulness each day.

This is not striving to earn salvation,
but living out the life Christians have already received.

Luke 9:23 Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.
Luke 9:24 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.
Luke 9:25 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self?
Luke 9:26 Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.

Luke 9:23 hides more truth underneath. Why hide it? Because most people won't listen anyway, so why bother?

Why is Jesus in Luke 9:23 talking about that particular day (and onward), and then suddenly he jumps thousands of years into the future in the very next verse? Luke 9:24-26 is talking about the end-times. Luke 9:24 is about whoever takes the mark will save his life, only to lose it a few years later. Luke 9:23 also strongly applies to the end-times. If you want to be with Jesus when he comes, then prepare to leave your home for him.

Why do I have to leave my home for him? Isaiah 24 points the way. Things are going to get ugly shortly before Jesus arrives. Be prepared to flee or suffer the consequences. But nobody is going to flee. Nobody is going to listen. So Jesus' message remains hidden.

Yes, following Jesus isn't a once-and-done affair; it is a lifelong struggle--to take up our cross and follow. So that is a daily, continual walk of discipleship.

It means we don't prioritize our selfish appetites, we commit ourselves to the Way of Jesus; we deny our appetites our selfish impulses, we do things Jesus' way. It's a call to metanoia, usually translated as repentance; quite literally metanoia means a change of mind, a reorientation of how we think, and also how we act. In one sense it's course-correction, in another sense its a continual transformation of our mind, "Do not be conformed to the pattern of this world, but be renewed by the transformation of your mind", "Have this same mind in you that was in Christ Jesus". It's about confessing our sin, it's about abiding in faith, it's about obedience to God's commandments, it's about loving our neighbor, it's about making God's kingdom first priority--God's kingdom being the operative model for how we make value judgments, look at others, and live in the world. It's about recognizing that following Jesus is not easy, it's a cross that we have to carry; it's a narrow road not a broad one. It is hard, difficult, and it can mean that other people will hate us, it can mean that we might have to quite literally suffer for it, it means living the tough life of loving, doing, believing even when the world screams the opposite at us.

Pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer, I think, puts it best in his statement: "When Christ calls a man, He bids him come and die."

self control.
discipline
deny the ever present sinful nature
Reject the fastfood version of sin

Sinless, perfect, mastermind, fearless leader Lucifer himself eventually got to the point where he struggled with those concepts

For me it is a lot deeper than discipline, self control etc.

I die daily because of who He is...

Who are we to assume we have His Wisdom on the day?

We see a speck of what He does.

He sees the best way for each day not us.

Seeing what the father is doing before acting was Jesus's approach to daily service and should be ours.

Putting principles into practice doesn't cut it.

It is a relationship walk but few seek it and find it it seems.

The result is missing out on abundant blessings and divine surprises.
