Genesis:
1:14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:

Seems to me this supports astrology, which is often associated with 'witchcraft'.
So the bible supports witchcraft, yet Harry Potter is criticized for promoting something that is nothing like witchcraft.

Exodus:

2:11 And it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown, that he went out unto his brethren, and looked on their burdens: and he spied an Egyptian smiting a Hebrew, one of his brethren.

http://www.thebricktestament.com//exodus/moses_commits_murder/ex02_11a.html2:12 And he looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no man, he slew the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand.

Oooh, REVENGE... in the BIBLE?

You know.... it's very easy to see evil in books when we look for it.
Trouble is, we often miss all the good stuff.

uhh...

did you know that back then people used the stars for direction as in which way is north south east and west? so that doesnt mean that its for astrology.

astrology is dumb...if astrology was true it would mean that twins have the exact same future, and we all know that doesnt happen.

and just because the bible records something that actually happened (wars, moses killing the egyptian, etc) doesnt mean the bible supports it. I believe if you keep reading moses was punished for what he did.

Look i have all respect for HP as a book. well written and obviously very popular. however, all three of my pastors have taught, and i concur, that HP contains real incantations and spells.

Where? You have yet to give an example of the real spells in the "Harry Potter" books.

Haven't their been insidences where people, mainly kids and teens have gotten involved with the occult.

Who? Sources, please. The idea that "Harry Potter" was leading masses of teens to the occult, again, like the idea that JK Rowling was a witch, mainly came from a spoof article published by "The Onion."

LOTR is all based on the bible

Alright, Christian symbolism can be found in "The Lord of the Rings" by those who look for it, but "The Lord of the Rings" was not based on the Bible. The story came out of Tolkien's imagination, and the backstory was based on "The Silmarillion" (which wasn't published until after his death).

I think you missed my point... if we LOOK for something in a book, we will find it and find a way to justify it. Everybody has a view and an opinion on these things... it doesn't always mean that our opinion is correct.

Elaborate, because I sincerely disagree. It might have Christian symbloism, but that's because an author's worldview becomes entangled with what they write. But that it's based on the Bible? I find the idea to be ludicrous.

I think what people are getting mad about isn't just your opinon, but the fact that you embrace "Lord of the Rings", which has wizards who are protagonists, and shun "Harry Potter", which has wizards who are protagonists, which I've said before. And few of you are giving reasons except-- "Lord of the Rings" is based on the Bible, which it isn't, and "Lord of the Rings" isn't centered around magic like "Harry Potter". Problem is, "Harry Potter" isn't centered around magic either-- both stories use them as story telling devices. Sure, "Harry Potter" would be different without the magic device, but so would "Lord of the Rings." So, can anti-Potter haters please answer the question-- why do you embrace "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Chronicles of Narnia" while you shun "Harry Potter"? No one has really given a satisfactory answer.

I also think people get angry when claims are made over and over again about JK Rowling being a witch, which is absolutely false, or their being "real spells" in the books with no examples.

I agree wholeheartedly! It is rather childish...

The only childish thing I can see in the pro-Potter arguments was the poster who said that all the people who hated "Harry Potter" were losers-- that was uncalled for. But, for others, it does get frustrating when the anti-Potter side keeps on saying the same things ("The books have real spells") and never explaining themselves. And again, most have not explained how they can embrace "Lord of the Rings" and "Chronicles of Narnia" while shunning "Harry Potter." And the reasons that have been given by some are rather half-baked.

Ok,, I found a really good article that goes along with what I think most of our views (those that oppose) of HP is. Some may be more against it than others, but I think this article does justice to those who oppose HP, but are pro LOTR and Narnia. I myself have never stated that HP was totally evil, in fact, I said they are probably good books and movies, otherwise Walmart wouldn't have been swamped when the new book come out. (I know.. I work there ;)) I have stated that I have no desire to read or watch the films, and I don't. Everyone has to make the choice for themselves, what they read and watch, and be led of the Holy Spirit. If HE tells you not to read or watch something... you better listen! It is senseless to continue nitpicking over who is right or wrong in this issue, because most people's opinions are already etched in stone. Now to quote another famous literary icon.... "God bless us, Every one!"

PS.. this article is called Harry Potter vs. Gandalf..
