This is an interesting thread. What makes Narnia better than LOTR, and LOTR better than HP?

HP is meant as a children's series, which I think worries parents because children can be easily influenced. Parents need to take part in what their children take part in; that includes what they read. As an analogy, a friend of mine used to watch scary movies with her father when she was young, but afterwards her father would make her repeat that it was just a movie, it wasn't real. Needless to say she's doesn't get too scared at those types of movies any more.

LOTR is more for adults, so it doesn't quite come on the hardcore Christians' radars like HP does. As adults, we're supposed to be able to separate fact from fiction (although some adult still have that trouble :p), so such stories that don't follow the same guidelines as God are not considered as 'bad'.

Narnia, on the other hand, was written as an intentional analogy to stories in the Bible, so it's of course more widely accepted in the Christian community.

In the end, all 3 are merely works of fiction and fiction is meant to entertain above all else.

The Hobbit wasn't meant for adults. Children read it. The Hobbit was even written for children.

The "witchcraft" everyone seems to be mentioning in Tolkien's work isn't there. The word witchcraft is not mentioned. He does mention "magic", but not meaning how we interpret it today.

OP - I think you have an interesting interpretation of LotR and it would be worth discussing in a more positive light. Let me know if you're interested.

On books in general - I don't see anything wrong with books per se. If they cause issues with you and you struggle with some thoughts in them, then I would suggest not reading them.

Listen movies are movies, they are stories, fiction, Watching a movie does not turn you evil, nor do I beleive they have any evil in them along with Harry Potter, (And this is really odd coming from a fellow pagan, considering we don't believe in satan)

Good enough advice for anything in life. We can turn any thought, action, device, resource, entertainment, or event into something good or evil depending on our own mindsets. It comes down to the choices we make in life with what we've been given that determines how we view our world. But whichever way we choose the world to be, we must be prepared to live with the consequences of our actions.

Jesus is Spirit but also a man. He lived in the world he was born into. He ate, drank and slept; he prayed, he taught at the synagogue, he attended special occasions to rejoice with his fellows; he cried, he laughed, he paid taxes; he had friends and loved ones, and he surrounded his heart not with the threat of Satan's attacks but with the love of God. His message was positive and hopeful for the weak, the sick and the poor, or for anyone whose heart was heavy with the burdens of this world. He admonishes us to stay away from anything that separates us from God's love.

Wizardboy01, if you believe LOTR places a wall between you and your walk with the Lord, by all means, stay away from it. There is no sense in engaging in activities or entertainments that will make you feel less close to God, or rob you of your peace and security in your faith.

Perhaps a new CF screen name might make your message more clear. As others gently mentioned , Wizard is an odd name for someone who believes such things are the spawn of Satan.

In LOTR, a main character called Gandalf was one of a clan of Wizards. He became Gandalf the White, as powerful as his leader, Saruman the White. The characters are fictional but demonstrate my point about personal choice. They were both gifted with the same power but Gandalf chose to use his power for good, Saruman for evil, and they both had to live with the consequences of their actions for good or for ill.

Peace

I use Evil-Monkey-Be-Gone spray for that. It comes in a choice of scents: pine, buckleberry, simblemyne, Old Toby and mushroom. The blurb on the can reads:

"Made in Longbottom in the Southfarthing, Lotho Sackville-Baggins Inc., estab. 1420 S.R. All rights reserved "

Yeah well guess who lives in mine! Sirius Black! I feed him canned chili and granola bars. :p ^_^
I used to have a Ringwraith at the foot of my bed, but since I realized that effect was caused by my bright yellow cloak I don't give it any heed. :p

Um...how can I break this to you gently? LOTR is a work of fiction. It's not true.

The Hobbit yes, but LOTR? This came up in another thread a while back, and all I can say is that given that the Narnia books and LOTR were published at around the same time, it's clear from a comparison of writing styles that they're not intended for audiences of the same reading ability. I'd put Narnia at ideally pre- to early-teens (say, 10 - 13), and LOTR at the earliest five - ten years above that; although as a series it gets progressively more advanced.

The "witchcraft" everyone seems to be mentioning in Tolkien's work isn't there. The word witchcraft is not mentioned. He does mention "magic", but not meaning how we interpret it today.

Quite - it's fantasy magic, pure and simple.

^_^ , well, I believe that is some serious extrapelation. I love LOTR, and I am not possessed by satan, and I have a very good set of morals.

Yes, The Chronicles of Narnia are usually listed in the Juvinile section of your local library, but, I think every adult Christian should read The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe and The Last Battle at least once in their lifetime. It will bring what Christ done for us home in a very real way that only a childlike heart can comprehend... maybe that was Lewis's idea to begin with... "I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it." Luke 18:17 NIV

Voyage of the Dawn Treader has some good material as well. I still love the '80s BBC version - priceless, timeless stuff. The new film has a long way to go to impress me! :D
