Abbey suddenly realised she was lost. The trees and grass were so high around her, she couldn't find the way she had come from. She was turning round and round, jumping at every little noise.
Why had she run? It was safe on the beach with the others. What if someone had come to rescue them while she was lost in the jungle? How stupid! Would they remember she was there? Surely they'd take a roll and realise one was missing? But what if they thought she was dead? They might rescue the others and leave her here...
Abbey let out a frustrated cry.....and froze.
There was a noise, a scream, but not human. It sounded like some sort of monster. Abbey went quiet, her heart thudding in her chest. The long grass on her left suddenly swished and Abbey felt herself panic. She screamed and turned and ran through the grass.
Something was chasing her, it was right behind her! Abbey felt herself trip and go down onto the hard ground. She pulled her legs up to her chest and lay still, trying to breathe quietly, her eyes swimming with tears. She squeezed them shut.
And waited.
There was silence.
Had the thing gone? The grass swayed in the breeze, but there was no other noise. The thing had gone. What was it?
Abbey began to cry.
