Jacob was sitting in the airport waiting for the boarding call for his flight. He was nervous about leaving, but excited also. He couldn't believe he had gotten a full-ride scholarship! He had a bad feeling that he could shake..He didn't know why.
An hour later he sat on the plane, waiting to take off. His mind flashed back to two weeks ago.
*******************************
Jacob's phone rang.
"Hello."-He said in his deep voice.
"Jake, it's me..."-He heard Jennifer's voice. Jennifer had been his girlfriend since his senior year of high school. He planned on proposing when he came back on his next break. He couldn't imagine his life with anyone else....
"Oh..Hey-Jen, are you okay?"-He asked. She had been crying.
"Jacob, you know I love you, but we need to talk..."-Jacob's heart sank. Jennifer said that she was willing to try a long-distance relationship, but she didn't know if it would work...She hadn't given him a definite answer yet.
"Okay..."-Jacob said.
"This isn't going to work. I can't do it..."-She said. "I'm so sorry..."
Jacob buried his face in his hand. The silence was deafening.
"I won't go..."-He said finally. "I'll stay here and graduate. It's not worth going if I'm going to lose you..."-Jacob said, standing up.
"No...The truth is...I knew this was coming for a long time..."-She said.
"What? Jen, give me a few minutes. I'll come over and we can work things out."-Jacob pleaded, his heart pounding. He couldn't lose her.
"No..I've thought this through. It's over, Jake."-She said through tears.
Jacob swallowed the lump in his throat. "You're sure we can't work this out?"
"I'm sure..."-Jennifer
"The only reason is the distance? because I'll come back. You're worth it to me. I don't want to lose you, Jen. I love you."
Jacob's statement was met with silence, and then the words that broke his heart.
"I met someone else."-She said.
Jacob felt like someone had punched him in the stomach.

Jacob leaned back in his seat. He had never been a crier, but that night, he cried harder than he had in his whole life. Now, he was starting a whole new life. A life without Jen...
Jacob peered out the window as the plane took off, his mind spinning a hundred miles an hour.
He finally drifted off to sleep.
About an hour later he woke up. There was panic. His ears started popping as the plane descended rapidly. He blacked out because of the sudden pressure change.
When he woke up he was on a beach somewhere. He looked around. People were screaming and running around. He tried to sit up and quickly realized how sore he was. Other than the soreness, he didn't seem to be injured. He remembered learning about how unconscious people survive more accidents because the impact is less jarring.
He slowly stood up. He knew by looking around that people would need his medical help...He wasn't fully qualified as a doctor, but he was sure he could be some help. He got up, pulling his bag over his shoulder, looking for anyone who needed help.
