Hey, cool post Luke!!
Let's just call the fighters our characters fly in T-3's. Cause if you really look in the movie, the fighters really look like B-wings from Star Wars, except the cockpit is in the middle and the small wings stick out, like a lower case t, T-3. What do you think?

......John walked into the Jupiter II with his launch suit on. "Hey James, can go make sure the robot's in place and is secured?" asked John tapping on a key pad. John walked up to Calen. "How are the fusion manifolds and how is the hyper drive system?" asked John. "The hyperdrive system is at peak efetioncy[sp] and the manifolds are up to 98%. Oh, and I decripted the pistols Will messed with." replied Calen. John sighed. "Alright, you'd better go and get ready for launch." said John walking over to the pilot seat. "Hey Dave, I haven't had a chance to meet you yet. Welcome on board." said John smiling. "Hey, this is a nice looking ship." said Dave shaking John's hand. "Yup, she's a bute," said John tapping a couple more buttons on his key pad, "are all the weapons in storage and are all the navigationing systems online and ready and how is the life support?" "I've checked and rechecked and rechecked again that I charted the Jupiter II to fly towards the second ring at Jupiter and I've timed the life support to activate right when the first staises chamber opens." replied Dave. "Good, go and step into your chamber, the Robinson's, Isilsar, and James are already in. Dave knodded and walked towards the staises chambers. "Mission control this is Jupiter II, what's the statis on the those rogue fighters?" asked John. "Jupiter II, the third wing of T-3's have cleared the launch path and are standing by to defend you at any time." replied mission control. "Good, wish us luck." said John. "Come back to us John, your a good man." replied the man talking on the intercom. John set the key pad he was holding into a holder and closed it. He walked over to the main computer and tapped a couple buttons. A holographic image of their flight path appeared. John sighed again and looked out of the main window to Earth. "I'm gonna miss her." thought John. John pressed and button that made the hologram disappear. John walked over to the pilots seat and sat down. "Mission control, let's fire up this baby." said John. "Roger Jupiter II. T- minis 30 seconds.............20..............10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1, ignition. The Jupiter II's casings afterburners blasted! The ship slowly began to rise off the platform. Once the ship got to a certan height, the casing shot off in all directions. "Jupiter II, you are clear to begin your mission, good luck and God bless." said mission control. John set his hands on the controls and steared the ship towards outer space. The ships 8 afterburns glowed in the darkness of space as the Jupiter II rocketed away from Earth. John set the ship on auto drive and checked the coordinance again. After that, he walked over to the stasis chambers and checked the others. "All systems normal." said John to himself. John walked into his chamber and the door closed in front of him as he laid back and relaxed his muscles. Cybarnetic things began to open across his body, all of a sudden, the chamber froze like an icecube. The Jupiter II drifted into outer space.
