Michael and Jin are working on the new raft. Michael comes up with the idea of having an SOS beacon used while the raft is out to sea. But they realize that they'll need a power source to do that... like batteries... hey! Sayid said that the French Woman had batteries!
Sayid vehemently refuses to help. He says it's dangerous and that he may have been mistaken since he was so disoriented. He pulls out the maps and notes that he stole from the French Woman. Hurley sees the notes and recognizes a series of numbers that were used over and over in her notes.
They're the same numbers that he used to win the lottery... the CURSED numbers!
Hurley goes nuts in his head, but remains quiet. In the middle of the night, he asks Sayid some more questions about how to find the French Woman. Sayid thinks this has to do with batteries, so he ignores him. Hurley swipes some of the notes away from Sayid and then disappears. He heads to a river to fill several bottles with water because he's about to embark on a solo journey to find the French woman.
Charlie finds him at the river. Hurley says he's going for a walk. Charlie offers to join, but Hurley says that he needs some "alone time".
Morning comes and Sayid is furious at Jack, thinking that Jack knows something about his stolen notes, or that Jack made Hurley come and steal them. Jack is clueless as to what Sayid is talking about. Then they both realize that Hurley was in on this by himself. They ask Charlie about Hurley's whereabouts and Charlie explains that Hurley said he was going for a walk and that he was acting wierd.
The lightbulb then goes on for everyone.
Jack, Charlie and Sayid venture out to find Hurley. They find him just as Hurley steps on a trigger that's set to send a spiked trap swinging towards him (the same one that hit Sayid a few weeks ago). Hurley manages to escape.
Then they come across a rickety bridge made out of rope and planks of wood. A bridge?? How was a bridge built? Oh well... while questioning the existence of the bridge, Hurley quickly walks across it while viewers at home watch with anticipation. He safely makes it across. Then Charlie tries... he's almost at the end and then SNAP! It breaks and Charlie JUST manages to make it to the other side. Now the group is separated. Jack and Sayid offer to go around via some other route to catch up with them. Although Hurley and Charlie are supposed to stay put... they walk off anyway.
Charlie starts questioning Hurley's motives and odd behaviour. They hear a loud explosion from a distance (I'll explain later). Hurley gets annoyed and then caves in. As he's about to start explaining himself, they hear gunshots being fired... at them! They start running. Hurley trips and falls on his face. Charlie continues running. Hurley gets up and sees the French woman with a rifle pointed at him.
The explosion explained: Sayid and Jack are walking through the jungle. They hear gunshots being fired from a distance and pick up the pace. Jack (or Sayid, can't remember) triggers a trip wire and the French woman's home explodes. They later realize that it was just a diversion because there was nothing in the home to begin with. She had already emptied shop and relocated.
Hurley questions the French woman, who is still aiming her rifle at him. He asks about the numbers. She explains that while her crew was out at sea, they heard the numbers in a distress call and that's what led them to the island. They wanted to investigate. She also said that there's a control tower on the island located on top of the "black rock". Hurley asks the French woman if she believes the numbers to be cursed. She agrees with him. Hurley gives a sigh of relief and then gives her a big bear hug.
Charlie runs into Jack and Sayid and explains that they were being shot at. They agree to all go looking for Hurley. Suddenly, Hurley shows up behind them looking calm and peaceful. He hands over a battery to Jack and tells Sayid that French Chick says "Hi".
The side story in this episode involes Locke and Claire. Locke asks Claire to help him with a project, and it would only require her to use a saw. They work together, and talk a bit. Claire thanks him for helping her take her mind off of stuff. We're all clueless as to what they're building. Near the end, she explains that it's her birthday today. Locke then turns the project upside down and presents a baby cradle and says, "Happy Birthday". Everyone watching the show says, "Awww... so sweet!".
Other things that happened:
- Sawyer whines about the noise of the raft-building while he's keeping watch and trying to read
- Sun gazes at Jin while he works with Michael... we're not sure what she's thinking, but I say she misses him.
