Bread for the Brain is a Christian nonprofit organization which exists to serve God by encouraging reading, distributing knowledge, strengthening families and improving communities among the world’s poor by distributing books, reading materials and other media at low cost or no cost to the recipient.

One of our projects is to plant public libraries in poor rural comminuties that are not being served by a public lbrary. Most of the time the nearest existing library is 50 or more miles away. We partner with a local church to provide space for shelving and books and to allow the public to come in and borrow the books on the honor system. We currently have project libraries in Zimbabwe, Nigeria and United States.

In the US, we have one such project on Pine Ridge Reservation in the upper plains area. We are ready to establish a second US location and are looking for potential partner churches on or near reserves or resevations in the US or Canada. We are specifically looking to serve native populations.

We are looking for churches that we allow us some space for shelves and books as well as other media for a public library and will have times when the library is open to the public.

As partners, we are willing to do some work on the church, such as simple repairs, painting, etc., when we bring the books to set up the library. The library will be provided at no cost to the church or the community. We have also helped churches with utility bills as thanks for partnering with us when needed.

The library will receive new books by mail periodically, and we may visit once a year or so to bring new materials and/or to do more work for the church or community.

If your church has a missions team on a reservation, this may be a key to getting better contact with the community. These libaries can be non-threatening ways to get people through the doors and into a relationship with the church.

If you are interested, or know of a community that would like to have a public library, please PM me.
