• CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hello! I visit here once in a while and was hoping maybe you could clear things up for me.
I accepted Jesus as my personal savior in highschool but since then, have at best been, a christian seeker. Believing in him, looking at him from far, but reluctant to go close. As the hopelessness increased, I turned to the word for answers, seemed to hear from him but till now, dont feel like I know him. Please dont tell me things like draw close to him and he will draw close to you, or about praise and worship and thankfulness because I have read about all that countless times.
What troubles me now is this - what if christianity is just a mental exercise, the outcome of which depends solely on the person carrying on the exercise? Both closeness to god and answers to prayer depends entirely on the faith and positiveness in the mind of a person. If not that, then it is because it is not god's will. Makes me think christianity has a convenient explanation for every possible situation. If it is not lack of faith or sin or disobedience, then it is because god's will was otherwise. And for people like me who want to believe but have trouble doing so because we think too much, the answer is you need to be like little children.
For people with faith, when they dont have prayers answered, after a period of time, they get the mental strength to accept. They become mentally prepared to accept the situation through the exercise of prayer. The peace they feel then will be attributed to god's grace to accept his will. It may also be looked upon as a character building exercise, like Paul's thorn.

I am not trying to start some sort of a debate. I would just like to get answers to clear my doubts away so that I can believe. And it is not like I want to see god to believe but I do wish I can at least hear from someone who has physically felt god's presence presence. If there there is someone here like that, can you please share? But then again, there is a part of me wondering what if it is under the influence of some substance.
I have heard drugs and alcohol make people see things, make them feel happy and peaceful. So I cant help wondering if christianity is a mental exercise which triggers impulses in the brain similar to alcohol and drugs making people feel happy and peaceful in a better way than substance abuse.
Do I sound crazy? Am I beyond help? I just want to believe in the being who is all love but I have all these crazy thoughts.
Can someone please talk to Jesus about me and tell me if he has something to say to me?

I am sorry that you are having a hard time believing. I know somebody like that too. He really really wants to, but it's so hard when you can't. I know that God is working on him trying to show him different things, but it's not helping as much as he wants to. He says that all those things are possible coincidences. One time God gave him a dream. In this dream, he was flipping through pages of stuff (like on a computer screen or something) and he knew that the source of that "computer" was God himself. (In the dream he knew that).
So he was flipping through all kinds of dreams, signs and miracles to find something that would convince him to believe, but he couldn't find anything...

It's like God gave him a dream to show him that: you expect a miracle to help you to believe, but you just looked through all these and you couldn't find anything convincing enough...

It's the hardest for those who can't believe. And God knows it. And He will help, but it takes time.

All I can say is: DO YOU WANT GOD? This is the key question. If your answer is yes, most likely you will find Him eventually. Keep hanging in there. Keep searching. Listen to his answers. If something answers your inner question, don't think it's just a coincidence (although you probably will anyways), but try to see it as an answer. God speaks sometimes through a story, a movie, a song, a verse, person, thoughts, ideas... He speaks in different ways.

Take Me To Heart (Quarterflash)
You won't forget my eyes
Ooh, deep inside you realize
You're gonna see me Wherever you go
You're gonna hear me On your radio
There you are In your car
And suddenly You hear me
Do you want me Do you want me
Take me to heart

Down the hall Through the walls
You hear a voice that's calling
Do you want me
Do you want me
Take me to heart
Don't deny the miracle
Take me to heart
What more can I say
Take me to heart
Surrender's just a motion away

Imagine that God is a Being in space and that He hears each thought and word. And just try to communicate. It might be a while before you hear back from Him. But at least, learn to realize that you can have a conversation with a real Being. (Don't think of God in terms of a religion, but in terms of, say, your REAL Father, who is up there somewhere.) Imagine that your real Father has left you here on earth to learn something, to become something, to grow into somebody. And imagine that He is watching over you all this time, just to make sure you are going in the right general direction. Talk to Him from that perspective. OR if it's easier, imagine that Jesus is your best friend, somebody you knew from before, but that you had amnesia and forgot about him. Imagine that you are trying to connect with your best friend. He is watching over you, He is trying to connect with you and sort of kind of like remind you of your previous relationship, or rekindle your previous relationship. Perhaps if you see it that way, it might help........?

You know, it's kind of interesting, that you sound just like that girl in the Song of Songs. Here is what she said. I do believe that Song of Songs is prophetic. It's not just a story, but an illustration of the REAL seeker's journey towards God.
The person wakes up, realizes that they want to know God, realize that it's time to seek Him, and then they are having the hardest time finding Him. You might be at that stage. I went through it too (although briefly). It's the hardest stage of all. But after it comes great joy.

Son 5:6 I looked for him but did not find him. I called him but he did not answer.
Son 5:8 O daughters of Jerusalem, I charge you— if you find my lover, what will you tell him? Tell him I am faint with love.

The stage of doubts is not fun. But it will pass eventually. Try to hang in there. This song has helped me. Perhaps, in some way it will help you?

We all need love. And when I finally met Him, I discovered that there is so much love, you wouldn't believe. God has infinite love. And He needs to give it to somebody. And we are the intended recipients. All we have to do is the hard part: connect with Him. Searching is never easy.

Don't give up by Josh Groban:

Everybody wants to be understood
Well I can hear you
Everybody wants to be loved
Don't give up
Because you are loved

Don't give up
It's just the hurt that you hide
When you're lost inside
I...I will be there to find you
Don't give up
Because you want to burn bright
If darkness blinds you
I...I will shine to guide you
You are loved
Don't give up

For those who WANT God in their heart, it's DESTINY to find Him. So "love will lead you back". After something happened, people and God have separated. But in the future, we will find each other again. God is speaking through songs. Listen with your heart and hopefully you will hear what He is saying:

Love will lead you back
Someday I just know that
Love will lead you back to my arms
Where you belong
I’m sure, sure as stars are shining
One day you will find me again
It won’t be long
One of these days
Our love will lead you back

Calling you:

Somewhere in the night there's a lost star shining
Sending out a heartbeat to you
Way across the sky there's a faint light burning
Hoping that the glimmer will shine through
Somewhere there's someone
They're reaching out (they're hoping)
Like ships that are lost in the night
They're calling you
Calling you, calling you
Someone in the night is sending out a signal
Gotta get a message to you
Lying in the dark, the shadows make you shiver
Gotta shake off your fright, 'cause they need you tonight
Oh, somewhere there's someone
They're reaching out (they're searching)
For ships that are lost in the night
They're calling you
Calling you, calling you
Way off in the stars, someone is sailing
Right across the sky
You better wake up, you better look right
'Cause one lost star is calling tonight
This is it, come tonight!
Somewhere there's someone
They're reaching out (they're hoping)
For ships that might pass in the night
They're calling you
Calling you, calling you, ...

That's The Way It Is (Celine Dion):
I can read your mind and I know your story
and I see what you're going through yeah
It's an uphill climb, and I'm feeling sorry
But I know it will come to you yeah
don't surrender coz' you can win
In this thing called love
When you want it the most there's no easy way out
When you're ready to go and your heart's left in doubt
Don't give up on your faith
Love comes to those who believe it
And that's the way it is
When you question me for a simple answer
I don't know what to say, no
But it's plain to see, if we stick together
You're gonna find the way, yeah
So don't surrender coz' you can win
In this thing called looove
When you want it the most there's no easy way out
When you're ready to go and your heart's left in doubt
Don't give up on your faith
Love comes to those who believe it
And that's the way it is
(That's the way it is)
When life is empty with no tomorrow
And loneliness starts to call
Baby don't worry, forget your sorrow
'Cause love's gonna conquer it all, ALL!
When you want it the most there's no easy way out
When you're ready to go and your heart's left in doubt
Don't give up on your faith
Love comes to those who believe it
And that's the way it is
Don't give up on your faith
love comes to those who believe it
and that's the way it is.
That's the way it is
That's the way it is, yeah
Don't give up on your faith
Love comes to those who believe it
And that's the way it is.

Here I Go Again

Here I go again, falling out of line
Falling into someone new
Here I go again, getting out of line
Forgetting there's so much to lose
But I'm holding out for you
Hoping that it's true
I don't want somebody new
Struggling in the dark
Lost when we're apart
No one makes me feel like you do
Here I go again, falling for a line
No one but myself to blame
Everywhere I turn, searching for a sign
A victim to the same old game
But I'm holding out for you
Hoping that it's true
I don't want somebody new (don't want nobody new)
Struggling in the dark
Lost when we're apart
No one makes me feel like you do
Oh, I've been holding out for you
Hoping that's it true
I don't want somebody new (don't want nobody new)
Struggling in the dark
Lost when we're apart
No one makes me feel like you do
Here I go again, Running out of time
Help me think of something new
Here I go again ...

Show me the way (styx)

Every night I say a prayer
In the hopes that there's a Heaven
And everyday I'm more confused
As the saints turn into sinners

All the heroes and legends
I knew as a child have fallen to idols of clay
And I feel this empty place inside
So afraid that I've lost my faith

Show me the way, show me the way
Take me tonight to the river
And wash my illusions away
Please show me the way

And as I slowly drift to sleep
For a moment dreams are sacred
I close my eyes and know that there's peace
In a world so filled with hatred

That I wake up each morning and turn on the news
To find we've so far to go
And I keep on hoping for a sign
So afraid I just won't know

Show me the way, show me the way
Bring me tonight to the mountain
And take my confusion away
And show me the way

And if I see a light, should I believe
Tell me how will I know

Show me the way, show me the way
Take me tonight to the river
And wash my illusions away

Show me the way, show me the way
Give me the strength and the courage
To believe that I'll get there someday
And please show me the way

Every night I say a prayer
In the hopes that there's a Heaven

Magic (Olivia Newton-John):

Come take my hand
You should know me
I've always been in your mind
You know that I'll be kind
I'll be guiding you
Building your dream
Has to start now
There's no other road to take
You won't make a mistake
I'll be guiding you

If We Hold On Together (Diana Ross)

Don't lose your way
With each passing day
You've come so far
Don't throw it away
Live believing
Dreams are for weaving
Wonders are waiting to start
Live your story
Faith, hope & glory
Hold to the truth in your heart
If we hold on together
I know our dreams will never die
Dreams see us through to forever
Where clouds roll by
For you and I
Souls in the wind
Must learn how to bend
Seek out a star
Hold on to the end
Valley, mountain
There is a fountain
Washes our tears all away
Words are swaying
Someone is praying
Please let us come home to stay
If we hold on together
I know our dreams will never die
Dreams see us through to forever
Where clouds roll by
For you and I
When we are out there in the dark
We'll dream about the sun
In the dark we'll feel the light
Warm our hearts, everyone
If we hold on together
I know our dreams will never die
Dreams see us through to forever
As high as souls can fly
The clouds roll by
For you and I

Hello and welcome to the forum.

I have been in the Lord's presence. It is a physical and spiritual experience that I can never forget nor want to forget and will long for the rest of my life. I can tell you without a doubt that God is real and God is love. Below is my testimony that I put up only yesterday to share. I was hesitant to put it up at first but the Lord desired this from me and now I know why. It is a little long but I wanted to share in detail. I do not do drugs now or then and I'm not saying I was living a perfect life. Far from it but I had questions and I wanted God to hear me and I felt I was being ignored. And that is the beauty of the Lord, when we are filthy, He sees through that and still chooses us. God heard me. This is my story if you desire to read it.

My Testimony of His Presence

He knows your questions, He led you here. I hope this helps you in some way even if in a small way. I know that faith is believing in what is unseen. God is the invisible God. His ways are not our ways. Drawing close to Jesus, acknowledging Him daily and talking to him is that relationship you need to draw close. I mean what kind of relationship can you have with someone if you do not talk with them or love them... I'm not saying to do this ceremoniously. He hears our thoughts before we utter them. Just talk to him with a sincere heart.

For the LORD does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.
1Samuel 16:7

God desires all of you. Heart, mind, soul. This is why Jesus said to:

Love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind.
Matthew 22:37

Seek Him and you will find Him.

But seek you first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you.
Matthew 6:33

But if from there you shall seek the LORD your God, you shall find him, if you seek him with all your heart and with all your soul.
Deuteronomy 4:29

No, you are not crazy and no you are not beyond help. God is real, God is love (1 John 4:8) and I believe you already know this, like I did then. I wanted to know without a doubt God is real.

Love in Christ

My humble opinion would be firstly, to not give up on God - keep your heart open to Him.
Sometimes He allows us to go through extended seasons of not-so-closeness. This is our loss of course, but also could be His way of bringing us ultimately closer to Him. Remember, He knows you better than you know yourself and knows how best to lead you into His presence. Always remember that you are one of His creatures, His love for you and His gift to you in Jesus.

Dear one:

I will not tell you "draw close to him and he will draw close to you," or praise, worship, thankfulness. Instead, I'll offer you what I know, and a little of where I've been, where I am, and what got me here.

Just a few years back, I was a Christian on the way toward death from alcoholism. I was a severe alcoholic, and was well-schooled in church and spiritual growth, but this still happened. AA didn't work, therapy didn't work, treatment centers didn't work, ignoring it and hoping it would go away didn't work. Everyone gave up on me. And yet I'm here, with 2 yrs 7 months sobriety and a love for the Lord! How did it happen? I gave up trying to pursue a life of feeling and focused on a life of faith.

I wrote the following reflection just this morning:
"A few years back I lost my heart and passion for God. When I tried to get my heart back, it fled from me. When I focused on faith in my Lord and His Word, the Lord gave me back my heart."

It's time for medicine.

GOD’S PSYCHIATRY: CH 1 – A Pattern of Thinking
By Charles L. Allen

"A man I admire very much came in to see me. Many years ago he started with his company at the bottom but with determination to get to the top. He had unusual abilities and energy and he used all he had. Today he is president of his company and he has all the things that go with his position.

Yet, along the way, he left out something, and one of the things he did not achieve is happiness. He was a nervous, tense, worried, and sick man. Finally, one of his physicians suggested that he talk with a minister.

We talked of how his physicians had given him prescriptions and he had taken them. Then I took a sheet of paper and wrote out my prescription for him. I prescribed the 23rd Psalm, five times a day for seven days.

I insisted he take it just as I prescribed. He was to read it the first thing when he awakened in the morning. Read it carefully, meditatively, and prayerfully. Immediately after breakfast, he was to do exactly the same thing. Also immediately after lunch, again after dinner, and finally, the last thing before he went to bed.

It was not to be a quick, hurried reading. He was to think about each phrase, giving his mind time to soak up as much of the meaning as possible. At the end of just one week, I promised, things would be different for him… It can change your life in seven days.

One man told me he did not have time to be bothered with reading it during the day, so he just read it five times in the morning. However, when a physician prescribed a medicine after each meal, or every certain number of hours, no right thinking person would take the full day’s dose at one time.

Some have told me that after two or three days they felt they knew it sufficiently, and thus, instead of taking time to read it thoughtfully, they would just think about it through the day. That won’t work. To be the most effective, it must be taken exactly as prescribed.

Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “a man is what he thinks about all day long.” Marcus Aurelius said, “A man’s life is what his thoughts make it.” Norman Vincent Peale says, “Change your thoughts and you change your world.” The Bible says, “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he” (Prov. 23:7)

… Its power is not in memorizing the words but rather in thinking the thoughts…

Take it as I prescribe, and in seven days a powerful new way of thinking will be deeply and firmly implanted within your mind that will bring marvelous changes in your thinking and give you a new life."

Are you desperate enough to try it? Let me know how it goes.
H.

Thank you, Hupomone10. I am beyond desperate. And I have started with the medication. I can't help thinking of it as another mental exercise, and with that thought, I don't think the medication will work for me.
Life is depressing enough as it is. I need a miraculous turnaround. I sometimes wish God would put me out of my misery.

I have never had any spiritual experience.
Can someone tell me what the Holy Spirit baptism feels like? What do people mean when they say "the Holy Spirit told them"? When I say Jesus told me, I mean he told me through the word.
I feel Holy Spirit should go beyond a pricking conscience. Do you feel an actual spiritual presence? Divine joy, peace and love?

I understand completely (as best I can; no one knows the inner pain of another). It does seem like a mental exercise, but that's sometimes ok because without exercise our bodies would get very out of shape; same thing with our mind and heart. Give it a chance, if by medicine you're referring to the meditating on Ps 23 daily as the article I sent suggests. Try not to assume it won't work. God may surprise you.

Your pain is real. Many will try to tell you "you shouldn't feel that way." I have recovered from severe alcoholism; and one of the things that led me down that path were pains and reactions to life's situations. It didn't help for people to tell me "you shouldn't let that bother you." In fact it DID bother me, so the fact that it shouldn't didn't help a bit. I had to deal with them as they affected me, not pretend they shouldn't. I regarded the things that made me resentful and depressed as enemies and used scripture to battle them, instead of trying to ignore them and think they would go away. Scripture has answers and is very therapeutic, but because we got into this state slowly, over months and years, it cannot be healed by a simple reading once of any book or scripture passage.

You couldn't have convinced me a few years ago that this would make a difference; but for the last 3 years I've read one passage in the Bible every day, that deals with why I, an alcoholic, shouldn't drink. The result is that I've been sober for 2 yrs 7 months. It didn't work at first, but it has worked miraculously over time; and I have had only one temptation to drink in the last year, and that was only a fleeting temptation.

The same will be true of you regarding all the things leading to the despondency and depression. Take them seriously, don't just ignore them, and our Lord and His word will perform its healing. Here is a passage that God used in my life to lead me out of depression that came from every friend I had forsaking me when my family left me because of the drinking. It is directed to Israel, but because we are His children just as Israel was, it applies. It's another passage I still read every day:

Isaiah 43:1-5, 18-21
But now, O Israel, the LORD who created you says: “Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you. I have called you by name, you are mine. When you go through deep waters and great trouble, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown! When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you.

For I am the LORD, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. I gave Egypt, Ethiopia, and Seba as a ransom for your freedom. Others died that you might live. I traded their lives for yours because you are precious to me. You are honored, and I love you. Do not be afraid, for I am with you…

But forget all that (former miracles and deliverance from Egypt) – it is nothing compared to what I am going to do. For I am about to do a brand new thing. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it? I will make a pathway through the wilderness for my people to come home. I will create rivers for them in the desert! The wild animals in the fields will thank me, the jackals and ostriches, too, for giving them water in the wilderness. Yes, I will make springs in the desert, so that my chosen people can be refreshed. I have made Israel for myself, and they will someday honor me before the whole world."

Hupomone10, it is powerful each time I read but it is yet to sink in deep and so far, it is out-of-mind when it is out-of-sight.
It will be; but it will have a cumulative effect. It took months and years of false programming for our minds to believe some of the things that lead to our depression, resentment, etc, and it takes time for the "renewing of our mind" to occur.

This is the process we're in, the renewing of the mind. That's why experiences help short term, but don't seem to last. They make us feel better for a while, but they go away once the world's programming starts to have its effect again. And that false programming starts the moment we walk out of our devotional time with the Lord. That's why reading a passage once or a few times doesn't work either. But 5 times a day reminder of passages such as Ps 23, one or two weeks, then once a day reminder afterwords will have their cumulative effect and will reverse the false programming of the world.

I am not a counselor and can't pretend to be one, but when I was in a Christian Rehab center, I had pretty good counselors. One was counselor of the year for the state. He gave us the following confession of personal worth that made a tremendous difference in my life during the initial time of despondency. He explained to us that by the time a child is 5 years old, we are deeply entrenched with the world's false formula for self worth, which is
Self Worth = Performance + Other People’s Opinions.
SW = P + OPO

(what I do; what others think of me)

He explained that the cure for that was God's formula for self worth.

I am an awesome spirit being of magnificent worth as a person.
I am deeply loved by God,
Fully pleasing to God,
Totally accepted by God,
Absolutely perfect like God as a person in His sight,
and Completely forgiven!

We said this every day as a group. I cntinued to affirm this every day since then, and it has made a remarkable difference in my life. I promise I will not give any more things to burden you down, but this one, I encourage you to print out, keep it handy, go over every day and every time you feel depressed, and watch God work.
You are in my prayers,
H.

Dear Hupomone10, thank you for sharing your experiences and thank you for reaching out.
Some days ago, the Lord lead me - or so I hope - to this scripture:

Isaiah 43

1BUT NOW [in spite of past judgments for Israel's sins], thus says the Lord, He Who created you, O Jacob, and He Who formed you, O Israel: Fear not, for I have redeemed you [ransomed you by paying a price instead of leaving you captives]; I have called you by your name; you are Mine. 2When you pass through the waters, I will be with you, and through the rivers, they will not overwhelm you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned or scorched, nor will the flame kindle upon you.
3For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior; I give Egypt [to the Babylonians] for your ransom, Ethiopia and Seba [a province of Ethiopia] in exchange [for your release].
4Because you are precious in My sight and honored, and because I love you, I will give men in return for you and peoples in exchange for your life.
5Fear not, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east [where they are dispersed] and gather you from the west

15I am the Lord, your Holy One, the Creator of Israel, your King. 16Thus says the Lord, Who makes a way through the sea and a path through the mighty waters,
17Who brings forth chariot and horse, army and mighty warrior. They lie down together, they cannot rise; they are extinguished, they are quenched like a lampwick:
18Do not [earnestly] remember the former things; neither consider the things of old.
19Behold, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs forth; do you not perceive and know it and will you not give heed to it? I will even make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.

And here you are, sharing the same scripture.
And yet I continue to wonder about God, without applying in my life anything he seems to tell me.

That's amazing. God's care of us is beyond words! Remember this, it is precious, and shows His love of you.
