• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

hi everyone,
im not really too familiar with the forum but this seemed like as good of a place as any to use.
Basically, i have been getting over some pretty serious issues this past six months or so..all of them revolving around depression and general sadness. God has opened my eyes to the reality that my life is very blessed and that it is up to me to choose to be content in all circumstances, and i know that i have made real progress in the right direction.
but i am still really struggling with loneliness. I had a few good friends in high school but they have recently moved away for college (i am a college freshman). My parents are now in their empty nest years and arent around much, and my brother - who use to be one of my best friends - has gotten very occupied with his girlfriend/adult life. i just feel like everyone i used to turn to has moved on with their lives and i am still here.
I just feel very alone. And this triggers thoughts of depression/not being "on track" in my life. I feel like this means i will never find a spouse or friends again. I am very worried about never finding a spouse or having a family.
I know that the best way to gain relationships is to be actively persueing them, so i have joined a few clubs at school and try to be friendly whenever i meet new people. But i still find myself lonely.
How do i combat the feelings of intense sadness that accompany loneliness? what books/scriptures deal specifically with this?
thanks for taking the time to read this!

It does not mean that at all. You are just now old enough to vote. You are just now
coming to the point in your life where you get to decide things for yourself.

People will come/go in your life from now on. Realize that people are only in your
life for a season and enjoy the season. Combat the feelings by choosing to feel
exitied rather than sad.

Joining clubs, going to sporting events, cultural functions, chruch etc is a great idea.
Give yourself some time to develop good relationships. Take the alone time to reflect & decide where you'd like to be 10 years from now, 5 years from now and then
focus on ways to head in that direction.

18 is one of those pivital years, so is 21, most people don't need to get married until
they have a secure career, & a little maturity under there belt. It's looks to me like
you are headed in the right direction, you just need to go a little easier on yourself have have a bit of patience. Easy does it. Everyone has these feelings on occasion
you just refocus and be your own cheerleader. Like you said-you sound blessed to me. You still have your parents and your brother and obviously they think you are
mature enough that they don't have to baby you as much as they may have in the past. Good for you!

It's a time of changes, sweetie - but you will make new friends and move on. It just takes time.
These are some scriptures I've found helpful:

"I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters", says the Lord Almighty."
(2 Corinthians 6:18)

God has said, "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you."
(
Hebrews 13:5)

I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
(John 14:18)

I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.
(John 15:15)

A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
(
Proverbs 18:24)

The other posters have given such wise advice :amen:

I wanted to say how much I admire your resolve to choose to be positive and focus on God's blessings, even when life seems to appear so hard.

I also wanted to assure you that this lonliness shall pass; this is just a season in your life right now. And you know, one day you might look back on this season with fondness. Not the lonliness part. But the freedom. Right now, you're not tied to a spouse, kids, or a career. This is a time when you can spend so much of your time with God. I hope that you can enjoy the sweet fellowship you can have with God right now, as He prepares you for the next stage in your life. :)
