London increases the number of police officers carrying firearms

Police Commissioner Bernard Hogan-Howe said Thursday that the Metropolitan police will train 600 more firearms officers, increasing the number of armed officers to around 2,800.​

The UK has had armed police officers for decades. Specially selected and trained. Every time they fatally shoot someone there's an inquiry.

"In relation to specialist firearms officers, in the year 2011–12, there were 6,756 Authorised Firearms Officers, 12,550 police operations in which firearms were authorised throughout England and Wales and 5 incidents where conventional firearms were used."

Five incidences of police in England and Wales discharging firearms...in a whole year. So they shot at someone in 0.04% of incidences where firearms officers were authorised.

Please don't use facts, evidence, and data in gun related arguments when speaking to us Americans. We find it offensive in the extreme.

Instead, let us persist in our delusion that the US is "different" and that human behavior is somehow magically different in our country than for the rest of humanity. That is, the ONLY way we can enforce the law over here is the way we enforce the law. Nevermind the stats and data of all other countries with similar technology, economy, and demographics. Pfffttt. I scoff at you and your data. I bite my thumb at thee. And for good measure, look long and hard at my favorite finger!!!!!

We not only need guns, we need our officers to respond to any and all infractions with the maximum amount of force and violence. Otherwise, you'd have anarchy!!!! Nevermind that they got called in on a $75 misdemeanor offense. Break out the riot gear, get the tear gas and pepper spray, whip out those guns...

Lets compare. Greater London has about 8 million people, and New York City has about 8.5. The NYPD has 40K sworn officers, all of which are armed. The MPS has 31 K sworn officers, and about 2800 of those are armed, which is only about 9% of the police force. NYPD has one armed officer for every 212 people, and the MPS has one for every 2857 people. Quite a big difference no?
