Loaded question

The load in this question is the word "good". Because "good people" describes exactly none of us.

Here's a slightly less loaded question: "Why would a god who purportedly loves us create a universe and a set of rules which none of us could possibly hope to live up to?"

Originally it was not created that way, but through the fall of man we became sinners when we chose to disobey God in the beginning. Then because God is good, he sent his son Jesus Christ into the world to die for our sins so that we are forgiven for breaking his law. Otherwise like you said, we will be judged according to Gods law, which no man can possibly fulfill. Thus saith God, "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believe in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

I wouldn't say that its a "formula", but I would say it for what the truth of it is which is the power of God that renews the life within us.
"And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience"
