I noticed we have alot of different sections under "music", but no liturgical music and chanting section! There are so many different beautiful and inspiring liturgical pieces, i think it would be a shame for us not to have a place where we can discuss, share, and contemplate on them!

Anyone else on board?

here's a summary of what liturgical music is:

Liturgical music originated as a part of religious ceremony, and includes a number of traditions, both ancient and modern. Liturgical music is well known as a part of Catholic Mass, the Anglican Holy Communion service (or Eucharist), the Lutheran Divine Service, the Orthodox liturgy and other Christian services including the Divine Office. Such ceremonial music in the Judeo-Christian tradition can be traced back to both Temple and synagogue worship of the Hebrews.

This is true, MrJim. I by chance happened upon some Gregorian Chants from a friend and I have loved those since. Sometimes people post things similar I greatly enjoy....but I'm pretty much a newb when it comes to this stuff and finding it on my own ;)

i love Gregorian chant!
there is a wonderful scene in the movie 'The Pillars of The Earth" where the monks from the local monistary gather before sunrise in a local rock quarry in support of the miners.
As the sun rises the camera shows the monks gathered in shielding rows between the miners and the opposing quarry owners who want to shut the quarry down. Then the monks break forth in chant as the sun rises, while the miners do their work, safe and protected behind the human shield.

it's awesome!!! if you get the new forum, be sure to post a UTube video of this.

How about we start with a thread in the Classical section to see what the overall response is of this idea first. Do keep in mind you can start one of these type threads in your home forums as well.

Thanks for responding to my thread arborvita, I appreciate it :)

I have a couple concerns regarding this. First, I fear that it may not get the viewership necessary to determine interest in the classical music forum, and second, i'm also concerned that people who are interested in classical music may not necessarily be interested in this type of music.

I have started a thread in TAW once I started this, which seems to have generated positive feedback:

The Ancient Way - Eastern Orthodox - Christian Forums

Perhaps we put could put another thread in the other main subforums (OBOB, STR, others)?

I guess one of the main ideas I had for this is that people can share, learn about, and appreciate liturgical music from varying traditions and backgrounds.

This may sound a little obscure, but what if we were to start a thread in GT about this? There is alot of people from different faith backgrounds and interests there, and we could ask them not to debate in the thread (a tall order, perhaps, but I think worth a try). I think it might be a good place to gauge general interest. What do you think about this, arborvita? Of course, I'm willing to negotiate... ;)

Right now I'm trying to think how exactly I want to do this and where...I should make a thread in a couple of days. In the meantime, if anyone wants to offer up any suggestion on what this "trial thread" should include or look like, please feel free. Thanks everyone for your support, I really hope we can make this work! :)
