Little help for a newbie?

So I'm trying to build a site for my pops on his bday so the geographically disbursed family can stay in contact. I've never tried this stuff before, so it's a little slow going, and I've hit a wall. I've been using filezilla, and can now get pages - what I can't figure out is how to get domain.com/file to show up as the main page when I go to domain.com. Actually, I can't figure out how to get any content to domain.com, so I figured there must be some way to get domain.com/content to stand in as the main page when domain.com is entered into the browser.

Can anyone give me a hand?

If you are referring to the page that you would like to display when domain.com is typed into a browser, you just need to name it index.htm or index.html. That page will display as the default when that address is typed.
