Literal Genesis AND a local flood?

You Americans and your feet and inches! i hate those units. sigh. But still, turning a common argument around, why would God have mentioned the floodgates of the heavens if the fountains of the deep were the main source?

Because it rained for 40 days and 40 nights... which is a pretty long time.
If it were based on a real flood, 40 days and 40 nights of 1"/hour gives 25 meters, that would definitely be a story to pass along, esp. if great...grampa built a big boat to carry the family and livestock based on a vision...

So basically, the potential energy of falling from 10km

I typically assume LEO, around ... 300 km
10km is the moderately high clouds, in which case the vapor would likely been in the form of clouds and almost entirely blocked out the sun.

Ouch.
