I desperately want to swith to this OS but the only thing stopping me is the ability to run EACH and EVERY windows program I have on it. Is it possible? How difficult is it?

I am thinking of using the ubuntu linux

Thanks for any advice.

As far as I know, it's marginally possible to run Windows progams when using something like Wine, which forms a compatibility layer of sorts, but even that's not guaranteed to run EVERY program. It does, however, have the benefit of constantly improving and refining itself, so it's possible that the programs you want to run will eventually be supported, if they aren't already.

And then of course, there are cases in which certain programs were coded in a way that would make them platform agnostic, and you could easily find the same program for any one of the various Linux distros out there, or could possibly compile it yourself under your own system, provided there were no conflicts (I don't know anything about compiling as I've only done it once or twice, and both times were in Windows; I can't remember what for, though).

I need to do more research myself, as I know that a few integral programs that I use are Windows-only and I haven't yet installed Ubuntu as a dual-boot, even though I have the 5.10 Combo Install DVD/Live DVD sitting in a stack on my desk; I'm just not comfortable messing with the partitions until the video project I'm working on is finished and other types of data backed up.

Suse is probablly one of the most nooby friendly distributions out there that still allows room to grow and learn to use it. I think it comes with wine, so running most windows programs, or at least the popular ones should be possible.

Linux cannot run every windows program. The program WINE rarely can run a windows program without any problems. I also have the same problem as you. I really love kubuntu linux (the KDE version of Ubuntu) but I cannot run any window programs. Instead I set up a duel boot so that when the computer starts up and can select wether I would like to run linux or windows. That way I can play my games and stuff in windows and then use kubuntu for my school work etc...

Well I’ve used Linux for many years. The trick is to think Linux when choosing programs. The point is, when you evaluate different programs that you are considering to buy, check if the programmers were competent enough to port their software for cross platform use. Many developers now have different flavors of their product to run on Windows, Linux or Mac. Until you begin taking such things into consideration before purchasing software, you will always be locked into a specific OS.

The only thing I don’t worry about are games, since I don’t need to really run anything else but that game during the session, all I would need to do is select what I boot into to run that single program.

Know of any alternatives to Materializes Magic ? I can use a good STL File fixer, and Materialize will not support Linux.

I would have said Autodesk but that project has shifted from UNIX/Linux to Windows. That’s about the only industrial CAD I’ve worked with at work, myself. Most CAD’s do work with STL though (so they say) so I’m sure there are some choices. You could try BRL-CAD and I’m sure there are many more out there. I’ve never used materialize magic so I’m not sure what you require. Now a days I just work with Gimp, Blender and Anim8or (runs under Wine) which are all mostly artist tools. You could try to run it under VMware or Wine, it may work if it's not too demanding on graphics.

Thoes programs may be good for Creating STL files, but I'm looking for somthing that FIXES STL files, helps in the repairing of bad edges, fliped normals, Unifying Meshes, Hollowing Meshes, ect.

Ubuntu is a really good choice. You can use Wine for some Windows programs. There is lots of programs for Linux and Unix based systems out there. What windows programs do you want? If you like Word, Excel, Power Point then you can use OpenOffice.org for Linux.

OR you can Duel boot which means Have Linux and Windows Both on your computer. I am using SuSE Linux and Windows XP Pro on my laptop.

I would want a good office suite. Photo viewing editing software (ACD See is hard to beat). I MUST be able to support my printer/scanner. I would also want to run soulseek/limewire/DC++ etc. Stuff like that.

If I were to get linux I would want it as a standalone OS. No duel booting to take up HD space.

Now that I think about it, I may be stuck with Windows. :(

Well, for image editing you can use the G.I.M.P. you can try it out for Windows first if you want to. There are lots of drivers for printers. I don't know about scanner stuff. LimeWire works in linux, just go to the download page and get the Linux version. For DC++ Just search on Google and there is a website for it but I think the DC++ for linux site is down at the moment.

Here is a link for SoulSeek version for Linux: http://www.sensi.org/~ak/pyslsk/

If you still are not shure then Just get a MAC! lol.
