A little problem.
I'm trying to install apache on my machine, I unpacked and configured it, now comes the make and install parts and I'm stuck:
Maybe the screenshot will explain better.

I can't run make either on the bash prompt or the > after configuring.

Why dont you use the prepackaged apache that comes with your distribution ?

If you really want to compile your own, try launching the configure script inside the source directory, otherwise it will not be found (as stated by the error message you experienced)

I didn't know apache came prepackaged, thanks.

You could also run XAMP. Doesn't require installation. Drop it into a directory and run it and bingo! Apache, MySQL, PHP5 are running! You can even use it in combination with your exisiting Apache installation as long as you either shut it down first or change the port numbers.

XAMP runs on XP as well. So you can swap between platforms with little effort.

Coolness.
I took the linux plunge less than a week ago and wow, my xp machine seems like old material each time I kvm-switch.

It's a good feeling isn't it! :)

I did it cold turkey, but I don't recommend others do it that way.

What distro are you using? If you have the RAM, I recommend downloading vmware and trialling other distros within vmware to get a feel for them.

I'm running Suse Linux 10 on a PIII 933mhz 256mb ram machine and was actually looking to up my ram to 512.

Is vmware opensource/freeware? Didn't know that.

No. It's commercial. However, you can download the 30-day free trial of vmware workstation. The vmware player is free.

I haven't tried SuSe 10 yet.

Cool, the vmware player seems feature rich regardless.

It is quite good. You can create your virtual machine in vmware workstation and then use it with the player. If there's any commercial product worth purchasing, this is it. The price is quite reasonable too!

However, the ESX server version is VERY expensive!

How much is the workstation version? I've got the vmplayer working now and can run livecd's of different distros in it so I don't have to keep creating coasters. But how would you run xp in it? I've seen screenshots of it but can't figure out how it would be done.

Download the trial version of vmware workstation. It will "boot" a virtual PC complete with BIOS that you can adjust the settings. Then, simply insert your XP CD (or link to an ISO - much quicker) and it will boot from the CD. By default, an 8GB file is created for your virtual C: drive, but this can be adjusted. It's very nifty!

Although I prefer gnome, I've found it far less stable then KDE on the laptop I'm using.

Last week though I got ****ed at linux all together and switched back to XP. Anyone know a really stable distro for a Dell latitude notebook????

I believe Kannotix is quite good on Dell notebooks.

Can you save this installation - as a vmx/vmd whatever they're called file - to use in future so you don't have to install each time?

If the answer is yes, can you do the same for a different linux distro?

Yes, in fact you can use then as a basis for other virtual machines or send them to someone with only the vmwareplayer.

I prototype entire networks on a single workstation. For example: I recently setup two clustered Netware servers, an XP workstation, and iSCSI traget server for testing purposes. To speed my development time, I use a cloned image file of a partially setup workstation. That way it takes about five minutes to create each XP workstation! Unfortunately I can't do that for Netware due to the way it sets up, but it still is at least twice a as fast for me.

I plan on porting this setup from a server to a beefed up notebook so that I can demonstrate it Network setups to clients.

Last night I setup an xp pro virtual machine on my pclinuxos distro. It worked great. Now I've got to see tonight if I can load printshop and picture it publishing on it - the wife's favourite programs.

If I can get those running in a vm under linux then I may never have to boot into xp again. Well, until I want to play HL2 again.

Another question. If you are in an xp vm surfing the net are you still subject to the spyware/virus issues of windows or are you ok because you are in linux to start wth?

You still have the same issues. So, take a snapshot of the installed system, then create a new vm based upon the snapshot. The beauty of that is the new vm can either be a copy or based upon the cloned snapshot ie the clone contains only the changed information from the snapshot. In this way you can have several dozen different XP vms using very little diskspace. Create a base then one for games, one for photoshop, one for the kids etc. If one gets infected, blow that vm away and start again. Takes about 5 minutes to get up and running again.

It's no surprise to me that Novell are moving to virtual environments for their servers. Gone will be the days of installing an OS on a server, you'll just install the virtual environments.
