hey , i know there gots to be linux users out there. as for me, ive been a pc fanboy since, well forever. but anywayz. i would like to get into linux. the last time i tried to instal suzie linux on my pc , and the partion thingy when way wrong and formated my drive. that was not fun. anywayz im lookin into a linux emulator. ive tried winlinux, but it dosent seem to run, always gets some dumb error. then i tried cygwin, but i cant seem to get that working properly to run kde eaither. any sugestions from ya'll linux homies out there would be appreaciated ,

eh yea, i have knoppix, but im really lookin for a emulator that will run on windows. like cywgin .

Go all or nothing. Download Mandrake. IIRC it has the easiest setup and is a pretty user friendly basic flavor.

Just pop in the CD and let it auto. set up.

O... meant to ask , what partition are you referring to? The swap file?

You can also try Fedora. From what I've heard it's easier then Mandrake. http://fedora.redhat.com/

Cygwin is a Unix emulator. While there are a lot of similarities (since Linux is derived from Unix), Unix != Linux.

I installed mandrake 9.2 on my laptop. The Mandrake installer gives you a nice gui to partioning. If you have data on the drive already, it should be able to resize the existing partition while keeping the data.

Why do you want to keep Windows on your computer anyway? I have my reasons, especially that I’m a multilingual user and support for complex scripts still isn’t there, but you, an English user? And note, it’s 2004 now, the old canard that Linux lacks applications is totally passé. Dedicate your whole hard drive to Linux, and kiss goodbye both Bill-tax (product activation) and the Blue Screen of Death (which I had on my XP just the other day).

um, i dont think i would be able to do that. i love my xp machine. maby i will end up using mandrake to make a partition though.

I upgraded my mandrake 9.2 to 10 last sunday, and I recommend it. About 2 years ago I started using mandrake, I had no experience with linux before. This guide helped me a lot :

Lesser known, but still really cool. Try a knoppix hard disk install, it auto-detects everything. Basically works straight out of the box. Really excellent when you don't want to spend days configuring everything ala gentoo.

I would recommend redhat or any of its variants (fedora) since you seem to be having problem with setting things up.

Its a good 'newbie' linux

heh. i could never abandon my friend xp for good. i think ill end up instaling knoppix to the hard drive, knoppix is pretty sweet . thanks everyone.

Good luck. I’m itching to have Linux as the only OS on my machine. And I will, once support for complex scripts (Hebrew and Arabic) is good enough.

I don't get blue screens on my machine. I recommend you get hardware that XP supports better.
