  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

MaxR1996,
You look like you're in good shape.
Do you use creatine? Some of the guys in our gym who lift the most don't use it. I thought it had pretty solid evidence of being a helpful supplement. My current protein powder has it already added.
Any thoughts?

Personally, I've diagnosed myself with adrenal fatigue so I'm trying to determine how much exercise my body can handle.

I used to work for a company that provided sports medicine coverage for numerous professional teams. I had a discussion with a team orthopedist once and they claimed that creatine was an effective supplement. He also had the opinion, that it increased the risk of injury as well and this was based on his personal experience, dealing with athletes.

Yes I believe Creatine to be the only effective legal supplement for muscle building.

I've been curious about creatine for a while, though admittedly not interested enough to do enough research on it yet to determine whether it would be appropriate for me. My concern is that it could potentially make me lose weight. One of my friends took it last year and said it had been beneficial to her impressive 35 pound weight loss. I saw my doctor on Monday and she said I'm still in the 1st percentile for my age and height (which is not a good thing) and that I cannot afford to lose an ounce. I have tried to gain weight. I've never taken supplements before but I might trek out to a store this weekend and look at some. I need to find protein powder that I'm actually going to like.

Do any of you use protein powders, and if so, which brands are your favorite? Following a surgery I had in August my doctors had me use a special brand of protein powder called Unjury because I was unable to eat any solid foods while I was healing. I've continued to rely on protein drinks because my doctor and nutritionist are wanting me to get way more protein in, and as a vegetarian it's challenging to do. I'm so over Unjury, though. It's boring. I've gone through a few other brands, such as Vega and Isopure, and haven't found one I really like that much yet. A lot of people on Instagram have raved about Ka'Chava but I haven't bought it yet.

As to the main topic - I rarely lift weights, but I frequently do acro yoga, and have been the base for partners weighing 150+ pounds. Today I was the base for a girl who is a tall basketball player and probably weighs around 160 pounds, and amazingly did okay, but we kept it really simple. Lately I've mainly partnered with smaller girls who are in the 100-120 range, though. I used to do a lot more work with my boyfriend and other guys who were heavier. Earlier this year I was so much stronger. I might get into the gym and start actually lifting weights again. I don't want my shoulders to get bulky again, though.

As far as a Creatine goes - its an extremely mild supplement - in terms of both results and side effects. So it doesn't really matter either way. You're not going to gain or lose any substantial amount of weight from it. If you're trying to gain weight, it can aid in that, if you're trying to lose weight, it can aid in that. You're not going to lose weight from taking creatine.

For protein powders I like Optimum Nutrition

Have your doctors related the reasons for you being so light, as being related to your personal body type, genetics and metabolism, or have they given other reasons.

Are your parents and siblings similar to your body type?

FYI - a strategy that people have used to gain weight is to add oil to their protein shakes.
So if you are making them with whole milk and protein powder, you probably have enough fat.
But, otherwise , you can add canola oil or olive oil. These are considered dense in calories and nutritious for a high calorie diet.

I mostly run (mountain ultras) and ski, but I lift regularly to stay fit and healthy for those activities. These days I do a variety of things, with a lot of plyometrics, but October and November are heavy lifting months where I go for pr's. My best free squat was 495, and best bench was 175, back when I was younger and mainly focused on lifting. I've recently moved to only Smith machine squats, and my numbers have gone up but I think it's the advantage of the Smith machine. My bench is now only 140. But that's not too bad for a middle aged woman who only eats plants and runs a lot more than she lifts.

Wow!!! That's incredibly impressive! My mom is an inspiration to me because she's 50 and remarkably fit, too. She played tennis in college and never stopped. She still competes in adult tennis leagues. She's an amazing athlete. Though I don't think she's ever been able to free squat 495 pounds or bench 175. She can pick me up and I'm 100+ pounds. She does participate in the Ironman Triathlon every November, along with my dad who is also in his 50s, my brother in his 20s, and my grandpa who is in his mid-70s! I'll be eligible for it next year and plan on going for it.

I'm thinking of taking a weight training class for PE next quarter. I need to set some specific goals. I miss the muscles I had last spring. I feel like they shrunk.

That's awesome about your mom! I'm super impressed by triathletes because when I've tried them I struggle with the swimming.
This time of year I start lifting a bit heavier, it's kind of between seasons for me. Lifted heavy on legs Monday and my quads are very sore. Usually I do more plyometrics and body weight stuff which burns out my glutes, but only heavy days can make my quads sore. Owie! ...but in a sorta good way.

I came into the world as light as a feather because I was born at only 30 weeks, and have remained underweight. I went through numerous health struggles my first year and came out of it with a woefully incompetent immune system and serious endocrine problems. Thyroid issues and Addison's Disease are what make it most challenging for me to gain weight. I also just don't like eating that much. I never have; I rarely feel hunger and so it's a chore I complete because I don't have a choice. I also have always loved being as active as possible. I've been dancing since I was two. I'm usually not as thin as I am right now, though. I had a few setbacks over the summer and needed a couple of surgeries. I feel great now, though. My parents and siblings are all tall and trim. My little brother (age 15) is now half a head taller and still sprouting up.

I love the satisfying soreness from an excellent workout. It's the only kind of positive pain. :)

The really cool thing about Ironman is the vibe of it and how everyone encourages one another simply to complete it. Of course there are serious competitors who are intent on winning the prize but there's a pleasantly surprising number of people in their 60s and 70s who are there for the personal challenge and camaraderie. I love going even though I've never been able to compete just because of the atmosphere. Plus Florida is often really nice in November.

I definitely will need to train for the swimming and biking part of the triathlon next year, though. I was a competitive swimmer for five years as a kid and then no longer had the time for it. I need to get back into gear!
