Licenses?

This may not be the best place to post this but...So the Naruto anime got licensed. My friend and I were talking about it and he said they only licensed episodes 1-52 or something, so he can still download the later episodes legally. This confused me and brought up a question, not just about naruto, but licenses in general.

Technically, it doesn't. It's been liscensed, so most of the fansubbers have either stopped subbing Naruto, or they went underground. Supposedly it will be starting in the States later this year (around Fall sometime).

This is what I assumed that once a series gets licensed, fansubbing stops or becomes more discrete. Like in the commercial breaks on some fansubs it says "this is a fansub stop distributing once licensed in america." Can someone clarify this for me? I don't care too much, i never liked the Naruto anime(but I will have fun laughing at the dub). I was just curious and hoped someone here could help.

I'm not sure what your question is.

Are you asking if they only liscensed the first 52 eps? If so, then I would say "I think they got the whole series, but maybe not the movies (I'll have to read the press release again, but I don't remember the movies being part of the deal).

Or are you asking if fansubbers actually stop subing when a show is liscensed? Normally they do stop(they are supposed to anyway), but Naruto is one of those odd cases where almost everyone just went underground and kept subbing. I think this is because it is just so long a series that it would take years for the english DVDs to catch the fansubs.

Yes It made sense, thanks you answered my question. Sorry for making the confusing post. It was short at first but i went back and editted it in a confusing manner.

To be specific, I believe the only ones that stop are the American-based groups. Australia seems to have a large anime fandom and a few fansub groups are based there, and have continued subbing different series after the American licenses were announced.

And it isn't just Naruto. Inuyasha was/is in the same position, and so is Ah! My Goddess TV.

You are correct about the 'not-American' fansub groups, I suppose I should have been more precise.

You are also correct about Inu Yasha, but I think the reason is different for Ah My Goddess. Inu Yahsa was liscensed when they were later in the series (about where Naruto was liscensed I think) and people just wanted to finish watching without waiting six years.

AMG was liscensed about the time episode 6 or 7 came out. I think that is still being subbed because so many people have waited so long for it to come out, they want to see it right now. I think AMG is one of those fan favorites that many will buy whether they have seen it or not.

That's true. With AMG, it might also have something to do with people not wanting to trust MediaBlasters with a timely/good release. There may very well be a huge lag in the series once it starts getting issued on DVD in the States, and if the DVD release looks anything like other MediaBlasters titles I've come in contact with (Weiß Kreuz notably, Kenshin a far second), the quality of the disc authoring may not be very good, either.

That and I seem to remember that the group continuing with the AMG fansubs is Australian.
