  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Between Christian Nationalism and Social Justice concerns we sort of talk around something that has been around for a very long time, like ancient Israel and the interface of religious faith with socio-political systems. In our more recent history it has been Liberation Theology, starting in Latin America in the 1960's but has developed out into other oppressive concerns like racism. sexism, classism, etc. It has been controversial within the Christian Church.

Liberation theology is a deeply concerning growing movement in Africa. Due to the historical backdrop of colonialism, poverty and violence, there is a growing need for Christianity to become a movement for social justice. Some forms are almost non recognizable to Biblical Christianity.
It raises the questions of "who are the oppressed of today?" and what would a "Christian" nation do about it?

What is the Christian presence like in Africa now?

"In effect, what this means is that in Africa many socio-political structures are sinful and unjust and these call for liberation and transformation. Consequently, Africa is ripe for a theology of liberation since injustices and other evils are incarnated in her socio-political structures."
