Basically,
This is what one considers classy.

I believe a funeral should be the lifting up of the honored person. To put aside petty differences. And come together in memory of the person we lost.

As I see the otherside, Beliveves they need to bring politics into everything, to highlight differences, and keep the split of America.
They can't get more people to believe thier side unless they continuously chant the current "outrage" of the day.

Isn't it funny, Carter mentions the Kings being wiretapped, while having the brother of the wire tapper being an honored guest.

interesting side note: the wire tappers and wiretappee were all assassinated

That's why I said earlier that it would have been a great opportunity for Ted to Kennedy to step up to the podium and apologize to the King family for what the Kennedy family did to them. That would have been class

i am one of those wacko liberals. i am a fan of both carter and lowery. i thought both of them could have reigned it in, and thought that jimmie's refusal to shake hands with w. was a great mistake. i wish both had found a different tone for a different time.
with that said, we had some great stuff for coretta, one of the most gracious, elegant and compelling women of the 20th century, imho. teddy kennedy actually gave a very nice eulogy, maya angelou was much more appealing than she normally strikes me, bill clinton was at the top of his game and brought everyone back to the woman they were honoring, and his reference to george I being episcopalian as being one of the "frozen chosen" was side splitting and bush I was charming and hilarious. the music was amazing, and i spent three hours watching it in tears. it was a beautiful service, and i hope some of you got to actually spend extended time watching it instead of just the selected sound bites the media has chosen to concentrate on. if that is your source for the service, you are being mis-served. it was amazing.
while we villify the liberals for politicizing the funeral, doesn't this thread do the same thing? where is the commentary on the service as a whole and the woman who made it necessary? this whole thread is the pot calling the kettle black.
but this time, we started it. she deserves better from us, and she deserves better from all of us, too. God bless you, coretta. a life well lived.

The reason should be obvious: There is no such thing as a Dem or Rep in DC; that only exists in the minds of Americans who have accepted the myth that politicians in DC, as a way of business, REALLY put the People first.

This also explains why Dems did not start openly criticizing Iraq Policy until a couple of months AFTER Bush was reinstalled.

Just as Weddings happen in different venues and styles, so do Funerals. There is no One Funeral Format. The Kings dedicated their lives to positive change and accountability through public speaking. I've done a LOT of reading on King, and there is NOTHING to indicate they would have wanted speakers to succumb to self-righteous pressure of those who need to be held accountable the most. In fact, had they done that, the Kings might have said, "Have you learned nothing?"

Plus, many are ignoring the fact there was a very long Eulogy.

Plus, while many accuse the speakers of exploiting the stage, they do not level the same charge at all those politicians there who exploited the funeral just to show up and gain some points. Seriously, when was the last time any of them even talked to Corretta?

When ANYBODY judges King on his sexual activities I am grateful for the peek at true colors.

IMAO, even Coretta understood better than King's Judgers because the FBI thought for sure it would ruin their marriage when they told her about it...

The two are mutually exclusive. If he had not been wiretapped, he still would hve been phiandering. More importantly, it is the Democrats who raised the issue of the suffering caused by those wiretaps. The brother of the person who authorized them was right there and could have taken the opportunity to apologize.

I agree it would have been appropriate for Kennedy to apologize. However, how can one call for that apology while simultaneously attacking speakers for "politicizing?"
