And that was, of course, written by a totally unbiassed person?????

(Irony, if you don't get it)

In the USA the more liberal "mainline" Protestant Denominations have been haemorrhaging member for decades and it is the theologially conservative churches and denominations that have been growing.

I am Presbyterian and the PCUSA (the liberal Presbyterian Church) is one of those liberal churches that has shrunk because of its liberal (anti-biblical) positions.

In 1999 it loss 27,473 members.
It loss 31,549 members for 2001
It declined by 43,175 in 2004.

Those are hard facts. I for one, even though I am Presbyterian and Reformed, I'm glad to see the decline. Many in the leadership of the PCUSA deny much of the historic orthodoxy of the Christian faith and the particulars of the Reformed (Convenant theology) of our own denominational traditions. OTher "liberal" denominations also have a leadership that is anti-historic, Christian doctrinal orthodoxy.

There are some godly men and women in the PCUSA that hare trying to bring that church back to the traditional faith. I pray that the will succeed.

I am pretty sure the numbers are similar in other liberal denominations in the USA. I pray they repent and turn back to orthodoxy or go the way of the dodo bird.

Coram Deo,
Kenith

Ps. Daniel, that was a very good article and it was also accurate and to the point.

That was a good article. It gave me a little more insight in the present state of the Episcopal church. Nothing shocked me, I've heard of much of it before. However one of the statements that stood out in the article was this:
the Episcopalians at Columbus overwhelmingly refused even to consider a resolution affirming that Jesus Christ is Lord.

I agree with the author who said that if this basic resolution is rejected - overwhelmingly - then "it is not a serious Christian Church."

If anything goes except historic Christianity, then - as the author asked - Why become a (liberal) Presbyterian? Why go to church at all?

Why even call it "church?" Its "Christian" and "church" only in a social sense. Otherwise its no different from any other secular gathering. Except perhaps in this setting there is a deliberate attempt to embrace non-Christian practices and beliefs.

You know, a lot of conservative Christians have a hard time justifying going to church. So should there be any suprise to see liberal Christians dispensing with attending church altogether?

You want to have gay sex? Be a female bishop? Change God's name to Sophia? Go ahead. The just-elected Episcopal presiding bishop, Katharine Jefferts Schori, is a one-woman combination of all these things

Ummm.... they are changing God's name to Sophia?? When did that happen??

Well, all we can do is pray that these liberal churchs will in time come closer to the true teachings of Christ.

Exactly. I love liberal Christians. I really do. However, a lot of what they believe is very unorthodox. I hope and pray that they will eventually come back to orthodox teachings. :crossrc:

Some Liberal Christians felt the need to balance the masculine references to God and the Trinity since they are all males. In the book of Proverbs, Wisdom is personified and is in the feminine gender. So they exhalted Wisdom and called her Sophia - Sophia being the Greek word for wisdom, and a pretty good girl's name to boot. They also like to appeal to Gnostic writings and beliefs for support on their views.
