  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Let's see who can figure this one out!

My church doesn't teach it as a requirement of membership, but a large percentage of the population gives. We also don't teach a literal 10% tithe.

In considering what to give our pastor feels the 10% is only a base from which to start! Sacrificial and generous giving are a matter of conscience though and reflect our commitment to God and His work!

Just out of curiosity - does anyone here go to a church that doesn't teach or require the "tithe" as a condition of membership?

We absolutely don't require it as a condition of membership - and my pastor has never once spoken on finances from the pulpit. We don't pass a plate either. That said - we have extremely generous givers.

TITHING is the answer that I was looking for.
my church does not teach the necessity of tithing. we teach the necessity of giving, but not of the one-tenth tithe. we use the one-tenth as being a good guide, but the tithe was an old testament ordinance. new testament Christians give out of gratitude to God and love to others. it is part of the Church's whole sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving.

Precisely why my church does not teach a 10% tithe. My seemingly over-emphasized views on Christian liberty come from my home church here in California. I may disagree with our pastors on a few things here and there, but Christian liberty is not one of them.

That said, I think giving falls into that category of liberty.

Our church doesn't require a tithe for membership. I don't know of too many churches that do, that I wouldn't consider legalistic for it.

Our pastor does teach that tithing is an important part of our christian life. He doesn't speak often on it, and the context is not so much about tithing to that church, but in trusting God in ALL aspects of our life, including our money----which is the single hardest area of a christians life to turn over to God.
