  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

If you use God's timeline then Jesus resurrected on Sabbath morning. His resurrection was moved to Sunday to support the pagan practice of Easter. In the same way Sabbath was changed to Sunday to support the Venerable Day of the Sun the same way Jesus' birth was moved to December 25th. It's all about sun worship.

Easter is germanic. The German tribes were not converted to Christianity until long after the christian celebration of Christ's resurrection was well and truly settled. The christians of asia and europe had no knowledge of Eostre.

After 3 day/nights from Wednesday PM is Sunday according to the timeline you gave.
Day 1 - Wednesday night/Thursday night
Day 2 - Thursday night/Friday night
Day 3 - Friday night/Saturday night

MK 8:31 He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again. 32 He spoke plainly about this, ...

Christ rose after Saturday.
And when women showed up Sunday morning they were told he has risen.
What time was Christ risen exactly? We do not know.
But we know it was after Saturday.

EVERY major translator of the world disagrees with you.

Sabbaton
may mean Sabbath (Saturday) or Week.
If it says first sabbaton it does not necessarily mean Saturday. It may ALSO mean first of the Week.
You are constantly ignoring that part.

Enough improvising. Please.

Wednesday at sunset is Thursday night. Thursday at sunrise is Thursday day. This is the first night and day. Thursday at sunset is Friday night. Friday at sunrise is Friday day. This is the second night and day. Friday at sunset is Saturday night. Saturday day at sunrise is Saturday day. This is the third night and day. Jesus rose from the dead on the third day.

Acts 10:40 Him God raised up on the third day, and showed Him openly.

Mark 9:31 For He taught His disciples and said to them, “The Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of men, and they will kill Him. And after He is killed, He will rise the third day.”

Mark 10:34 and they will mock Him, and scourge Him, and spit on Him, and kill Him. And the third day He will rise again.”

Luke 9:22 saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day.”

Luke 18:33 They will scourge Him and kill Him. And the third day He will rise again.”

Luke 24:46 Then He said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day.

Luke 24:7 saying, ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.’”

1 Corinthians 15:4 and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures.

Jesus rose again the third day according to the Scriptures.

If you deny this massive amount of truth then there is no need to go any further.

If you deny this massive amount of truth then there is no need to go any further.
There is nothing to deny.
Day means 24-hour day, not daylight.
3rd day means third 24-hour day.

At what period of the 3rd 24-hour day Christ rose?

At the end, as it was touching the 4th day - after the 3rd day.

MK 8:31 ... that he must be killed and after three days rise again.

MT 27:63 ... `After three days I will rise again.'

Concerning specifically the resurrection it was told Christ would spend 3 days and 3 nights in Hades.

MT 12:40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

But how can it be - ON 3rd day and AFTER 3rd day at the same time?

On the 3rd day means DURING the approximate 24 hours.
They had no clocks. :)
To us, we know exactly when day starts and at what minute it ends.
They did not.
No one really knew exactly when night ended and day began.
So is the Scriptures not clear when the 3rd 24-hour day ends and 4th day starts.

Between the end of 3rd and beginning of 4th there is this time of uncertainty.
Twilight, dawn and then sunrise the 4th day.

There is an overlap.

MT 28:1 ... at dawn ... Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.

Depending on what translation you use can help get a clearer picture.

Matthew 27:63 1599 Geneva Bible (GNV) And said, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, Within three days I will rise.

Matthew 27:63 Contemporary English Version (CEV) They said, “Sir, we remember what that liar said while he was still alive. He claimed that in three days he would come back from death.

Matthew 27:63 Easy-to-Read Version (ERV) They said, “Sir, we remember that while that liar was still alive he said, ‘I will rise from death in three days.’

Matthew 27:63 Good News Translation (GNT) and said, “Sir, we remember that while that liar was still alive he said, ‘I will be raised to life three days later.’

The whole plan of God and the majority of the biblical testimony, as well as, the very words of Jesus say He would rise again on the third day. It's always best to use the clearer verses of the Bible to interpret the less clearer verses. Another way to study the Bible is to use the Bible to interpret the verses and not use the verses to interpret the Bible.

The death of Jesus did away with the whole sacrificial system. There were many rules given as to the ordinances. Ephesians 2:15 should read, commandments contained in ordinances.

Several translations render it that way. Several do not. Whether or not it "should" read that way is obviously a matter of opinion.

Hebrews 9:9-10 speaks of these ordinances and they are not the Ten Commandments.

Hebrews 9:9-10 It was symbolic for the present time in which both gifts and sacrifices are offered which cannot make him who performed the service perfect in regard to the conscience— concerned only with foods and drinks, various washings, and fleshly ordinances imposed until the time of reformation.

First of all, that word is not the same word translated "ordinances" in Eph. 2:15 or "decrees" in Col. 2:14, so there is no direct linkage.

Second, there is no reason to suppose that the Law can be sliced and diced into, e.g., moral, civil, and ceremonial. Doing so makes a neat way for jurophiles (if I may coin a word) to cling to certain aspects of the Obsolete Covenant, but it is hard to find such a concept in the text itself.

Third, the law that is abolished in Eph. 2:15 is the one that separates Jew from non-Jew -- i.e. THE Law. All of it. The thing which is cancelled in Col. 2:14 is the metaphorical "certificate of debt," i.e. the "decrees" ("ordinances" in Eph. 2:15, linked there to "commandments"). In both cases, it is considered "hostile" to us and is disposed of via the Cross.

It's still a sin to commit adultery, lie, steal, kill and so on

Yes, because those things violate love, and the love Commandment is explicitly and repeatedly reaffirmed.

and the seventh day is still a blessed and sanctified day.
The death of Jesus didn't change God's blessing.

Yes, it did, because it ratified a New and better Covenant -- one of liberty, one not mired in rituals and shadows and elemental principles.

You can't love God without understanding His definition of love.

Indeed. And He tells us about His definition in various places. James links the "royal" law of "Love your neighbor as yourself" to the "law of LIBERTY." John quotes Jesus as saying the greatest example of love is to lay down one's life for his friends. Luke implies Jesus defines love as "Treat others as you wish others to treat you." Paul describes love in 1 Cor. 13, and in Gal. 5 portrays service to others as practical love.

Understanding and applying those definitions is plenty.

Until Constantine decreed that Sunday was to be a day free of work, it was very inconvenient for christians to meet together for worship and the eucharist on Sunday, and yet it is clear that they did in fact do that, starting after sunset on the Sabbath and finishing early Sunday morning. Services in the Orthodox Church still reflect these origins, with Vespers on Saturday evening, followed by Matins and Divine Liturgy on Sunday mornings. Occasionally we have vigil services where all three are combined as they were in the beginning.

Hi.

Are you saying early Christians (as taught by the apostles) kept a Saturday Sabbath (rested, and possible worshiped) and congregated (worship service) on Sunday, and possibly worked on the same day?

As far as I know, only the Jews kept the Sabbath as a day of rest. For everyone else it was work, work, work, seven days a week. If anyone has sources that demonstrate something different I would be happy to learn.

Hi Edial,

I mentioned Synecdoche before.
The Church has consistently taught that Christ died on the Friday and rose early on Sunday, so the expression "three days and three nights" is an example of synecdoche, where the whole (3 days and 3 nights) represents the part (Friday afternoon/evening, all of Saturday, Sunday morning)

So at what point were Christians distinguish from Jews? Did the apostles teach sabbath keeping to new converts to Christ, or was it just Jews that had come to Christ happens to continue it?

These are questions out of curiosity.

In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.

Luk 24:1
Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them.

I'm glad that 3 gospels did not leave the math to us.

What part of Sabbath was past don't you understand?

Your use if commentary attached to scripture is poison. You should repent of your teaching tactics.

Mat 28:1
In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.

Mar 16:1
And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him.
Mar 16:2
And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun.

According to the detail of Jesus crucifixion week given by God in Lev. 23 there were two Sabbath on the week of Jesus' crucifixion. The first one was on Thursday, which was the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Mary bought the spices after this Sabbath had passed.

Mark 16:1 Now when the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, that they might come and anoint Him.

She prepared these spices all day Friday and then rested on the seventh day Sabbath.

Luke 23:56 Then they returned and prepared spices and fragrant oils. And they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment.

The words, "Day of the week" in Mark 16:2 in the original language is the word, "Sabbath". The verses should read like this, "On the first Sabbath". Why was it called the first Sabbath? Because they had to count seven Sabbaths starting after that Thursday Sabbath.

Mark 16:2 And very early in the morning the first Sabbath, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun.

Notice how they counted the Sabbaths.

Luke 6:1 Now it happened on the second Sabbath after the first...

Jesus was to be in the gave three days and three nights. The third day starts at sunrise on the third day so after the day starts Jesus would rise from the dead. So apparently, after the third day is the same as saying after the sun rises on the third day.

Luke 24:21 But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened.

Jesus rose from the dead on the third day, according to the Scriptures.

1 Corinthians 15:4 and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures.

Acts 10:40 Him God raised up on the third day, and showed Him openly.

Mark 9:31 For He taught His disciples and said to them, “The Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of men, and they will kill Him. And after He is killed, He will rise the third day

Mark 10:34 and they will mock Him, and scourge Him, and spit on Him, and kill Him. And the third day He will rise again

Luke 9:22 saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day

Luke 18:33 They will scourge Him and kill Him. And the third day He will rise again

Didn't we go over already that in these verses day means 24-hour-day and not daytime?

Context surpasses literal definition.

It should be self-evident and ascertained in interpretation, but unfortunately among many, this basic principle is neglected.

John 11:5 Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day?

Each 12 hours is counted as a day. Night is one portion of a day and light is another portion of a day. Sunday morning would be four nights and four days. Let's not call God a liar.

QFT!

God be gracious to me a sinner.

And in doing so we contradict the word of God and the plan of God. And for what reason? To connect ourselves with a pagan festival geared towards sun worship?

On the venerable day of the Sun let the magistrates and people residing in cities rest, and let all workshops be closed. In the country however persons engaged in agriculture may freely and lawfully continue their pursuits because it often happens that another day is not suitable for grain-sowing or vine planting; lest by neglecting the proper moment for such operations the bounty of heaven should be lost. Constantine decreed (March 7, 321) dies Solis — day of the sun, "Sunday" — as the Roman day of rest [CJ3.12.2]:

What does God have to say about worshiping Him like the pagans worship their gods?

Deuteronomy 12:29-31 When the LORD goes ahead of you and destroys the nations and you live in their land, do not fall into the trap of following their customs and worshiping their gods. Do not inquire about their gods, saying, ‘How do these nations worship their gods? I want to follow their example.’ You must not worship the LORD the way the other nations worship their gods, for they perform for their gods everything the LORD hates.

Dear Maco,
up until the first centuries, the Greco Roman empire had named the days of the week by the celestial bodies, the sun, moon, mars, mercury, jupiter, venus and saturn, so any official proclamation by the emperor regarding a day of the week would have used that name. In the document you quoted above, Constantine declared the first day of the week as a work free day. The official name of the first day of the week back then was "dies Solis" or "day of the Sun". The Christians didn't call it by this name, however, they called it "Kyriaki" or "day of the Lord", and all historical evidence shows that Christians had already been particularly gathering on this day to worship God and celebrate the Eucharist, Constantine's declaration had nothing to do with why Christians worshiped God on the first day of the week. They did so in honor of Christ's life giving resurrection on the third day.

When you got out of bed this morning, were you honoring the Norse god Tyr by doing so? What about the next few days, are you keeping a special place in your heart for Woden, Thor and Friya? If I were prime minister of Australia and declared that every Thursday was to be a public holiday, does that by default mean I am associating the holiday with Thor?
This appears to be the nonsense you are claiming by your quote.

For someone who is so particular about honoring the Sabbath, you seem a bit to prone to bearing false witness against your neighbor.
