  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Just, curious, how many of you scientists out there, were inspired by Mr. Spock?
Mr. Spock,half-Vulcan,half-human,was played by Leonard Nimoy, who passed away today at age 83.

One of the reasons, that I became a scientist, was because of Mr. Nimoy's character. I can remember one line that,Mr. Spock said, when he was asked about logic.
Here is what he said. "If I am on a planet, that has a positive gravitational force, and I have a hammer in my hand. When I let go of the hammer. I do not have to watch the hammer fall. Because, logic dictates that,it will fall!"
Does anyone else have any famous quotes by Mr. Spock?

To me the most beneficial part of the small amount of Star Trek I saw (I was in England and far more a fan of Dr. Who), was the repeated statement by Leonard Nimoy 'that would be illogical'.

To me that is a reminder not to rely too heavily on logic in assessing the actions of others.

A person on CF in a different section wrote something that could only be interpreted as insulting, and I was offended. A couple of days later I noticed he wrote something that didn't make any sense however I read it, and I looked at some of his other postings and realised he was a nice fellow who wrote odd stuff from time to time.

And I did something that seemed right at the time but in retrospect wasn't completely logical, so I had to forgive myself because human brains are not designed for logic, but are heuristic.

One good consequence of this is our brains don't get stuck trying to solve a difficult problem but do come up with what looks like a viable answer in the time available even if it isn't the best solution.

So thank you Leonard for allowing me to forgive myself for my lack of logic as I also forgive others.

:)

I believe Leonard Nimoy was jewish but don't know if he was a christian or not.

When I saw Mr. Nimoy,at a Star Trek Convention,he did not say anything about his beliefs.I do remember him saying ,"Biologist, engineers, and other scientist come up to me all the time and say"Your character inspired me to become a scientist.""

I believe Leonard Nimoy was jewish but don't know if he was a christian or not.

Leonard Nimoy suffered for being Jewish in the Catholic Christian-dominated part of Boston where he grew up:

'We lived in view of a very large Catholic church—still standing—which, after Sunday school, was a dangerous place for Jews to be around because young Italian kids and Irish kids came out having just been told that we had killed their Christ.'

It was 20 years later with Vatican 2 that the Catholic Church officially renounced any and all anti Jewish sentiments, in fact I think of the Catholic Church now as the New Catholic Church because as Vatican 2 is gradually implemented it should turn the church pretty much up side down. I would be interested to hear your feelings about that.

I think the Catholic church has been making some steps toward loving people.
But the Catholic church has never been one of my interests so I really know very little about it.

50% of the Christians in the world are in the Catholic Church and it is changing enormously right now and in the way all the other churches should be changing so reading Vatican 2 is a must.

Getting back to Leonard Nimoy, his Jewish background was fundamental to his life and to the Vulcan Salute he brought to Star Trek. His achievements were considerable. He wrote the story for Star Trek IV and directed it and acted in it, directed another Star Trek movie, a documentary, made five musical albums, one song one reached number 3 in the US, narrated many things, was an accomplished photographer, writer and poet, and played leading roles in a great many films and TV shows.

I can remember, while taking a social studies in high school, watching a film about prejudice. This film had a white man,who did not like Jews. When he was asked,"Why don't you like Jews?".He responded,"Because they killed Christ!"
I was perplexed and dumbfounded,as I have never heard, even to this day, hear anyone say that in real life. When I was in high school,I even knew then about Matthew 20:28 which states:
"Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

Therefore, there is no logical reason for anyone to hate the Jews, because of the death of Jesus. Somebody had to kill Jesus in order for Jesus to be resurrected!

Bedsides,no one could really kill Jesus.Just as the above verse says, that Jesus gave,and/or laid down his life for many.

The Catholic persecution of Jews is and the Jewish response is one core theme to the history of the Western World over the past 1,000 years.

For example Britain became a Protestant nation permanently after the synagogue in Amsterdam funded Cromwell's New Model Army which defeated the King's army and so the Puritans won. The nation had the sense to take the Puritans out of power as soon as Cromwell died, but a condition for allowing the (new) king back from exile was that he and all subsequent monarchs permit the Jews to return and carry on business unimpeded.

The overall effect of the Protestant schism was to split the Roman Catholic Church in half, one half leaving it and forming the many Protestant churches which were mainly safe havens for the Jewish people just as further South the Jews had to leave Spain with the Moors when the Christians reconquered it, and have lived peacefully with the Muslim Arabs ever since.

The Catholic / Jewish conflict in Boston in 1941 was happening in Poland and Germany in a more serious way during WW2. The leader of Germany regarded both liberal democracy and Marxism as Jewish inventions and got trashed. He was wrong in so many ways, the USSR wasn't Marxist but Stalinist, and it had far more tanks than Germany had.

I am not pleased it took so long after the horrors of WW2 for Vatican 2 to finally be held as the idea was first suggested to the Pope by two cardinals in 1948. But given the dogma of Papal infallibility it was felt unnecessary to involve anyone other than the Pope in any decisions so holding a Vatican council was itself a big shock in addition to the many things that came out of it.

Getting back to Leonard Nimoy, the culture which is fairly prevalent in Jewish families World-wide is one of learning and hard work but also the parents have great faith in the ability of their children to choose what is best for themselves. So although 'Spock's' parents had little idea what Star Trek was about, they were still totally confident he was doing the right thing.

Pick up those three attributes: learning, lots of work, and confidence and your chances for success are a lot better.

Live Long and Prosper!

I have a 53 year old Jewish friend who remembers seeing signs as he grew up in the store and restaurant windows in the metro Detroit area that read "No Jews". He actually lived in a fairly Jewish area...but the predominant religion was Catholic at the time.

It is human nature to pick something different about someone and hate them for it. It is sort of a backward way to elevate ourselves.

Yes,many groups were discriminated against.Growing up as a black boy,I was keenly aware of the issues between blacks and whites. Both of my parents were from North Carolina.

I was perplexed, when looking in a U.S.History book, when I was in High School. There was a picture in this history book of a store front sign. This sign had the words,"No Irish Need Apply." I said to myself,"But, are not the Irish people........white?"

It does seem to be hard for most people to be generous to everyone they meet. I know there was a time I fell into that way of thinking. I had no clue when I was thinking that way how hurtful it was to I said things to. But the word of God kept speaking to me. The Adamic race is one race. Jesus died for all men and women. If Jesus died for all, how could I treat anyone different than anyways else. We all have a soul that is of more value than the whole universe. Praise God He broke thru and changed me.

I think as Christians we have a greater responsibility to love the non-Christians because we may be the only glimpse of Jesus and His love that many will ever see. I am saddened to find out how many of my non-Christian friends expect me to treat them poorly and with prejudice since I am a Christian. That is their experience with Christians.

:amen: I hate to say this. But,I have seen more "Jesus" in some non-Christians than I have seen in some Christians. You are right! The only "Jesus"that others see will be in us Christians. Jesus said that we are the salt of the earth, and the light of the world.

One friend of mine, also a christian once said this."Everybody loves God. But, we just cannot stand each other!"

Just as this "Feel Good" popular song of the 70's states.

We are one in the Spirit
We are one in the Lord
We are one in the Spirit
We are one in the Lord

And we pray that all unity
May one day be restored
And they’ll know we are Christians
By our love, By our love
Yes, they’ll know we are Christians
By our love

We will walk with each other
We will walk hand in hand
We will walk with each other
We will walk hand in hand
And together we’ll spread the news
That God is in our land

And they’ll know we are Christians
By our love, By our love
Yes, they’ll know we are Christians
By our love

It would be so much nicer if Christians had loved thru the ages. America in many ways was a reaction to all the Christian wars that had been going on in Europe for over 2 centuries. Why would Christians be at war when Jesus said to love our enemies?
