  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Apparently, this really left-wing terrorist was planning to kill local law enforcement officers for their support against a particular gun law.

Washington man arrested after allegedly vowing sheriffs who oppose gun control law, "will be shot, by me"

The social media salvo came as Ledford's retribution for many of them waging a public declaration against the merits of a gun control bill called Initiative 1639. (The new law which passed in November, seeks to put more protections on gun ownership when it goes into effect in July.)

“I-1639 is law,” read one of screeds composed by Ledford, whose Facebook profile photo features a headshot snap of a burly Karl Marx wearing a pair of Ray-Ban Wayfarers.

“sheriffs that are non compliant will be shot. by me.”

Whether or not he was going to go through with it, one thing is for sure...

His ultra-leftist beliefs are going to be really popular in prison.

Heavens above - He would shoot those opposing gun laws? - ironically his insanity is kinda a reinforcement of the value of gun control. You wouldn't want an idiot like him walking around the streets with one.

But your thread also highlights a psychological element that Im interested in - How a moral perspective that purports to support human rights, can evolve to an extremist extent resulting in threats of violence or murder. We've seen it with religious affiliations picketing abortions and culminating in the murder of staff in the clinic. What goes through a person's mind where their moral stance results in something totally immoral.

That Newsweek writer needs a better editor, but the facts are accurate. Little punk may spend a little time in jail for criminal threats, but unless they find something more interesting this isn't going to earn him any serious time.

I suppose we could just ask anyone who supports the killing that occurs in war. Personally, I just rationalise it then watch re-runs of Friends.

There are nut balls on both extremes. Anyone who denies this, is out of touch with reality.

Well, we have a 23 year loony Washington State leftist that made threats against Washington State law enforcement personnel. What weapons did this 23 year old leftist own to carry out his diabolical plan? How many rounds of ammo has he been stockpiling since he has been old enough to buy ammunition? Why are there are no pictures of his weapons? The right wing Coast Guard Officer had a pretty good stash of weapons and ammo and had the pictures posted all over the news.

Scary, because when he gets out. He will be sneaky. And may cause damage.

Apparently it was just threats on Facebook (which is bad enough), but no weapons.

I wonder if he thought he could make the threats and not get arrested? It wasn't a bright thing to do.

What difference does that make? Owning a gun isn't illegal...and it's not as if it's difficult to get them.

Well, for one thing, it is pretty hard to shoot someone if you do not have a gun…

But....it's not illegal to own a gun. You may not understand this, but making a threat against someone's life is considered illegal whether or not you actually own a gun. If you own a gun....it's not like making a threat against someone's life suddenly becomes more illegal. It's the exact same crime as making a threat against someone's life without a gun.

I believes that Aryeh understands that. The guy who made the threats may not have. Haven't seen anyone here say it is illegal to own a gun either.

Point is that he made those threats, and yet there is no mentioned that he was in any way prepared to carry it out. That is in contrast with the Coast Guard fellow who had the weapons, and Cesar Sayoc who mailed 13 bombs to prominent Dems and Trump critics. Those two earn the title of terrorist. This fellow, Ledford, seems ignorant and mentally off.

You don't think the guy from the Coast Guard is "mentally off"?

Yes, though I would describe stronger than that.
Don't you think Ledford was mentally off?

Maybe???

The problem is that the left, to some degree, has justified violence against those with different political views. Once you start doing that, there's always going to be someone else who thinks it's ok to push that line...

There's really no one on the right saying that using violence against the left is acceptable.

No, that is tremendously disingenuous, Ana the 1st.
I don't see anyone saying what Ledford did was okay at all.

Interesting article though:

Study shows two-thirds of U.S. terrorism tied to right-wing extremists
“A Quartz analysis of the database shows that almost two-thirds of terror attacks in the (United States) last year were tied to racist, anti-Muslim, homophobic, anti-Semitic, fascist, anti-government, or xenophobic motivations,” its posting says.

US terror attacks are increasingly motivated by right-wing views

An analysis of the Global Terrorism Database by researchers at the University of Maryland published in 2017 shows a “sharp increase” in the share of attacks by right-wing extremists, from 6% in the 2000s to 35% in the 2010s. The share of attacks by religious extremists also increased, from 9% to 53% between the two decades.
Don't pretend that all on the right are angels or that none think that violence against the left is okay.

I'm always skeptical of articles about studies that don't link to the actual study. If you can find that though, I'll gladly take a look.

This one does link to the study....here's a screenshot of a chart from the pdf...

So while it seems true that right wing extremists are committing a larger share of attacks....it still seems like Muslim terrorists are responsible for more deaths.
