If you are wondering why I have such an opinion on this? No good reason. I just like this kind of stuff and I'm being nosey. :)

Joshua

Nosey is welcomed, lol....

Lutherans are nice people. The coffee is good, the people welcoming, and the girls good looking.

Glad to have you in TCL.

As are the brats and potato salad (good-tasting... not good-looking). Imagine my misfortune at growing up Lutheran and somehow not getting the gene that allowed me to actually enjoy brats and potato salad... I'm not even that much into beer! Yeah, I was always the loser at the Church picnic to choose the hot dog and potato chips over the real stuff. lol

There are LCMS congregations in Canada?

Yes. There are a number of congregations from the English (12) and SELC (4) districts in Canada.

The problem I have with the Lutheran Church-USA name (LCUSA) is that it's close to the Lutheran Ministerium and Synod - USA (LMSUSA) name.

Since in 100 years we'll all probably be speaking Spanish anyway (not that that's necessarily a bad thing) I propose we look ahead and call it: la ILE - Iglesia Luterana Estadounidense.

(I love how you can say "United-Statesian" in Spanish without it sounding weird.)

Thank you. I didn't know that. BTW, I understand there's a resolution for the convention next year to eliminate both of those districts and to fold the congregations into the geographical district in which they live. If that passes, these 16 congregations would become part of the LCC. If it fails, IMHO, these 16 congregations would not make "The Lutheran Church in North America" a more appropriate name than "The Lutheran Church - USA" How many congregations do we have in the USA?

This whole thing isn't much of an issue for me, just supplying some chit chat material for our forum. BUT, I do this our current name is misleading and confusing. And I think it detracts from our signifcance. When the presiding bishop of The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is quoted - bow, people know he has some authority and speaks for Lutherans. When Dr. Kieschnick is quoted (if the press even thinks to seek his view), people are left wondering, "how many Lutheran churches are there in Missouri? And isn't a Synod an endangered animal in Australia?"

Ever heard Lutherans even try to say that word? They can't agree. Is it "sin-ODD" Or "sigh-NARD" Then ask 'em what it means. I doubt too many know. Maybe it's not a good word to use as the name of our body for the world's identification - if even we don't know what it is. Or even how to say it.

Just me. I'm new to the LCMS. I have no emotional connection to the name we've been using for 90+ years. I know old things die hard and people emotionally hang on to such things. Like I said, just chit chat material.

I don't know about the English District's agreement with the LCMS, but if that motion passes, it will not effect the SELC District. As per the merger agreement with the LCMS the SELC is to stay intact. If the dissolution of the SELC were attempted by the LCMS, the SELC would likely dissolve the merger agreement and become an independant church body. My assumption is that the English District would do the same.

I have never heard a Lutheran mispronounce the word 'synod'. But I have heard many non-Lutherans mess it up.

I guess if those districts really feel they need to be distinct and different then it would be inappropriate for them to walk together with us. I can see why the SELC would want to remain separate for historical reasons, but the English District's purpose has outlived itself and is not necessary anymore. It seems that it may only exist to cause division.

That could really be said of any district. In this day of mass communication, is there a need for districts at all?

My pastor told us that there are some proposing that the LCMS change it's name. Evidently, this has happened twice before, the last time about a century ago when the current name was embraced.

I don't know where he heard this from but from all my sources I havn't heard and inkling of a name change. As someone else on here posted it should not be the LCMS but the E*CA that should drop the word Lutheran.

It was one of the proposals of the BRTFSSG.
