If laying on of hands is an elementary teachings, what have you been taught about it? Even before that, why is this a foundational teaching?

Actually, under Christ, it's a very different practice than the Jewish tradition. For Jews, it was a symbolic blessing. For Christians, it's a mechanism to facilitate God's power moving from one who is anointed in the power of the Spirit to another who needs healing or to be Baptized in the Spirit.

Read the examples in the New Testament to affirm this paradigm. God's power literally flows from one person to another. The woman with the issue of blood . . . God's healing power flowed out of Jesus through his clothing as she touched Him. There are many examples. After He selected His apostles, everyone pressed in to touch Him because there was power flowing from Him healing them all. This same power is in all believers who are baptized in the Spirit. That's why we're instructed to go to the elders when we need healing for the laying on of hands, and we will be healed.

That's kind of my point. For an elementary teaching, we don't actually teach on it. I bet you'd hear more on tithing that laying on of hands.

Had started a study on this earlier but didn't get far.

Hebrews 6 "Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,2 Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.3 And this will we do, if God permit. 4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, 5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,"

In Acts 9, Yahweh told Ananias that He had given Paul a vision of him laying hands on Paul and Paul regaining his physical sight.

I Tim 4:14 “Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.”

So what then does it mean to lay hands on someone? Or at least what do main denominations teach it means?

My understanding is the power of God being transferred through us by the laying on your hands on the recipient.
This could be healing, gifts, or just a touch from God, whatever He wants to do.
