Hundreds rescued as floods strike

Caravans have been seen floating down the River Avon in Evesham

More than 750 people stranded in cars, caravans, houses and boats have been rescued from floods in Worcestershire.
The authorities have asked for military help after a night described by Hereford and Worcester Fire Service as its "worst in living memory".
West Mercia Police said thieves had broken into abandoned vehicles in Herefordshire and Worcestershire. About 20 special needs children trapped at Evesham's Vale of Evesham Special School could spend another night there. More than 1,000 people are expected to spend the night in rest centres in south Worcestershire.

About £1bn a year is needed for flood defences, Environment Agency chief executive Baroness Young has said.
Waters have continued to rise and nine severe flood warnings are in place across the Midlands and south England. Fresh water supplies have almost run out in parts of Gloucestershire and RAF helicopters are rescuing people from Tewkesbury, which is cut off. Earlier, Environment Secretary Hilary Benn defended the flood response and said conditions were "unprecedented".

Power restored as floods recede

Flood water threatens the town of Upton-upon-Severn

More than 48,000 homes have had power restored as waters recede in one of the areas worst hit by England's floods. A Gloucester electricity substation was repaired by emergency services, while at another in the city water levels came close to breaching outside walls. The widespread flooding has also seen at least 350,000 people left without running water across Gloucestershire.
